Summary
Switch is an airplane racing game that has a relatively simple concept: navigate a plane with the goal of keeping it in the air for as long as possible, and don’t crash into any walls. Sounds too easy? It’s not, because the plane keeps accelerating, so a few white knuckle moments are guaranteed—but does Switch have that ‘I’ll get you hooked’ addictive factor?

As mentioned, the Switch gameplay is a simple one. There are four lanes on which the small white aircraft can fly, and you can switch lanes – in order to avoid obstacles, for instance – via touchscreen tap. Most of the obstacles you will encounter at the beginning are blue walls; later you’ll also see black aircrafts flying towards you, blocking the route.
The main difficulty is that the plane will speed up, making it increasingly difficult to avoid obstacles. More often than not you will crash into a wall or an obstacle.
Be sure to collect the blue power ups that pop up en route. Fly into one and become invincible for all of 10 seconds, give or take.
Again, the gameplay is very simple, but the app does have that addictive factor that spurs you on—after all, wouldn’t you want to beat the current highscore (13 325 points)? Boast your own highscores via OpenFeint.
There’s only the one game mode, which we predict may be a bit of a turn off to some users.
Bottom line:
Switch’s graphics are stunning, and the simple concept is genius, but, as mentioned, we anticipate that quite a few users will tire of the one game mode after having played a few rounds, due to lack of variety. Still, it’s definitely a ‘good’ game.
Screen & Controls
Switch does very well in this category: the graphics and UI are stellar. A lot of thought was put into this application’s design, and even the animations on the start screen are nice.
The game looks its best when played on a tablet: crystal clear graphics and it runs very fluidly.
Speed & Stability
Switch is very sturdy, but not very fluid, at least not when we tested it on the Desire. It tends to lag, and when this occurs the plane will crash and there’s nothing you can do about it. Doesn’t happen every time, but it’s annoying when it does.
On a brighter note, the application performs beautifully on the Acer Iconia A500 tablet.
Price/Performance Ratio
This version of Switch is available for free from the Android Market, but ad banners are displayed, even sometimes during a round.
A full version is available for EUR0,82 and comes with an option to start as of 5000 points.
