Summary

I sometimes can't help but feel a little apprehensive vis-à-vis our lives becoming a wee bit too easy and comfortable thanks to miraculous recent advances in technology. Creepy human highway scene in Wall-E, anyone? We love our smartphones – and, admittedly, some of us are absolutely addicted to them – but we’d like to remain at least semi-smart and preferably physically autonomous ourselves, thank you very much.

So without wanting to sound like I’ve become totally lazy and dependent on my gizmos and gadgets—I have to confess that sometimes when I’m working on my computer I kind of don’t feel like getting up to check my phone for incoming text messages.

I was at my desk the other day thinking just that, so I decided to do a quick Market search for an application that would allow me to access my phone via my computer. What I came up with is Remote Web Desktop Full.

Features & Use

Section rating:

We tested Remote Web Desktop Full on a rooted HTC Desire; please bear this in mind as some of the application’s features will only work on rooted devices.

The first time you start up the app a no-nonsense style menu explains the different functions, some of which are quite comprehensive.
The menu is split into three columns, of which only one truly relevant to the ‘remote web’ aspect. ‘Web Desktop’ enables you to establish a connection between smartphone and computer, allowing you to remotely control the former. ‘FTP Server’ lets you set up a server and ‘App Manager’ lists purchased apps.
If you decide to set up the FTP Server: it’s stabile and efficient, but it isn’t a full spectrum FTP server—it simply does not have enough settings options to fulfill that criterion.
You can use the App Manager to back up your apps, though like with the FTP server it isn’t as thorough as some free apps that are available specifically for that purpose.

Now that that’s covered, let’s get down to the core feature this application has to offer: establishing a connection between phone and computer. The first thing I noticed during the set-up: a computer client isn’t necessary in order to access the phone; just enter an IP address and the two devices will connect. You will then see a sort of desktop (called DroidTop) harbouring more features and options such as 'Messaging', 'WiFi Keyboard' and 'WebCam'. The first one is fairly obvious: it lets you access text messages stored on your phone, as well as send new texts, provided you allow the application to create new text messages. If you want to write texts using a keyboard hooked up to your computer select ‘Wifi Keyboard’.

‘WebCam’ is certainly the feature that intrigued me the most. It transforms your smartphone into a webcam for your computer, which is super convenient for users who don’t happen to have a webcam. You can even select whether the front or back camera is to be used and whether you want to allow access to providers such as Skype or Google.

If you’re looking to swap data but not via the FTP server try the ‘File Exporter’, which I used to export some music to my smartphone, wireless and easy as pie.

Amidst the numerous features my personal favourites are 'Screen Capture‘, 'Terminal' and 'Remote Control'. You can probably guess what the first two features do, but let me share my thoughts about the third. This feature is only suited for root users! And it’s lots of fun. Install the little ad-on and you will be able to control your phone via your computer. Ah, the apotheosis of lazy-tude!

Despite my obvious enthuse for this feature I do see a few aspects worthy of critique, the first of which is security related to network connection. You can secure a network using a password, but it isn’t foolproof. Also, SMS syncing is a bit slow.

Bottom line:

Top marks for Remote Web Desktop Full—it’s a truly exceptional, dare I say must-have application for root users.

Sure, the FTP server isn’t top banana and no one really needs the app manager, but those are more like little bonus features rather than what constitutes the app’s core.

The application will expand your smartphone’s functionality as well as establish a connection between your phone and computer. Syncing, data transfer and – if for root users – remote control use—that’s a well deserved five star rating in my book.

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

Remote Web Desktop Full’s controls and graphics aren’t the bee’s knees. As far as graphics go, well, we’ve seen prettier menus. We noticed delays in the display between WebCam and Remote Control that weren’t related to the network.

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

Remote Web Desktop Full performed very well throughout our test runs: both fluid and fast.

Price/Performance Ratio

Section rating:

Remote Web Desktop Full can be downloaded for EUR2,99 from the AndroidPIT App Center, free of ad banners of course. The application is well worth it, especially for root users.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Rocky. I agree with you that the side features are not vital, but nice little bonuses for those who like them.

I've been using this app for some months now and mainly for writing sms from my desktop pc (like I used to with Nokia PC suite). It's really nice to work with, given some hickups every now and then in terms of UI but the great thing is that the dev is giving fast reaction when mailed.

A really must have for root users! Just as a sidenote: I hardly use the other features e.g. webcam, contacts since it just ain't my use case.

proffeecom I agree with the above said, for the most part. In addition to that, there are a few things I would recommend developer add/fix: 1. Add a button to go a level UP from within the File Explorer window. 2. When clicking on the "new SMS" message pop-up, it sends the whole window into a permanent loop. It'll blink till the end of the world. Can't minimize it, can't close it. The only remedy would be closing the whole browser window. I would really vote for this to get fixed first! Thanks!!! 3. What's the point of having a "Web Cam" app?! All it does, is telling me that, "For Motorola devices, please ...". then the only available option is to click OK, and ... the Camera Window closes... FYI, my phone is NOT a Motorola... Fix these and you will have fully deserved my 4 bucks. :) I bought the program within 20 minutes using it, because of the convenience using SMS, before anything else. Plus, I wanted to support the Developer and encourage him to fix the aforementioned issues! Bottom line: This software has many useful features, though I , too, think that price point of $3.99 is a little too much, for something not quite polished yet. Rooted AT&T HTC OneX, Android 4.2.1

Customer support not good at all and expect not working on your device Bought this app to be able to remotely control my DROID Bionic. However, after rooting and spending time trying out different settings, I made sure it won't work on my cell phone. I contacted customer support for a refund, but he refused to give me back my money. He says because he has already said won't work on some devices, my request seems irrational. But I think he doesn't care that this was one of the paid feature.

small footprint - high performance - stylish! Very useful functions, extremely easy to use! The FTP server and the web cam are real highlights. And the icon of the app deserves a design award!!!

Does what i need Only other thing i need is the ability to easily change the web desktop background so I can tell the difference of which device I'm logging into. There is no telling which device I'm logged into

Awesome! This app is one of the best apps for android that I have seen yet. Absolutely worth the four dollars.

An essential application Can not update! ---- This program has everything I need while both at home and work. The only thing I don't use in this app is the app manager. One thing I will say is that the SMS notifications on the browser side are very unreliable if they decide to work at all. There's a distinct lack of mms support too. Both features would provide the 5th star. It would be nice for it to also prevent GoSMS/Handcent popups while running.

Great App great app that is getting better all of the time.

Amazing I'm actually typing this comment from my laptop keyboard to my phone in real time. The SMS feature itself is gold, especially since I own a retail store and it looks a bit rude when I'm text messaging other online customers using my phone. Now it just looks like I'm just working on my computer updating inventory or something like that. Awesome!

Must-have! But buggy. Great app but screen capture doesn't work on Galaxy Ace. Developer said this would be fixed, but app hasn't received updates since June and no response in support forum... :-(

Great program I got this so I could control my phone from my desktop. I love being able to send/receive texts using a physical keyboard while I'm at work. One feature request is for android notifications to pop up in the windows toolbar. But a great app all in all.

Great app - but very poor (maybe fake) support What gives! I love this app and got the paid version.. but now it want's me to purchase it again?!? It tells me to email support if I have already purchased - But the email address is not valid (like totally bogus).. Sounds like I got scammed! So,... Buyers be leery... .As for myself - going to AirDriod....

Good app, free version as good as paid version. I downloaded the free app and used it for 3 hours or so. I liked it so much I bought it to support the maker. Works great to remotely access the phones Messaging, Contacts, File Explorer, Pictures, Camera and wallpaper. The remote desktop add-on that is suppose to allow you to access a look-alike of the phone itself doesn't seem to work. Or I can't get it working. It Have a Casio G'zone Commando and it uses about 18mb of ram until you turn off the icon on the top of the android screen. Then it runs around 8 to 10mb of ram even while using the web remote feature. I have it currently set to start with the phone in the background. I would like to see in the future..... GPS or cell phone triangulation based location Access to the programs already installed on the phone, Google Voice, Games, browser, etc etc... Cheaper price (which may come as more people buy it) Trusted connection certificate using https Heck, why not, access from another android. You would be the first if you did Drag and drop using File Explorer Other than that, great job and a great app. I use it while I'm at work so I don't have to dig my phone out to text people. Quite handy I must add.
