Good Old Snake 97 – Like in the Good Old Days
Tested version: 2.0
Latest version: 3.1.3
Requires Android: from 2.1
Summary
The application's name pretty much says it all: Good Old Snake 97 is a new Android version of the classic mobile phone game from 1997 that was mainly featured on Nokia phones. Nowadays smartphone users are quite spoilt when it comes to games, which are becoming more sophisticated by the minute—and yet some of us can't help but think back fondly to the good ol' days and yearn for that pixely snake slithering along the sickly green display scarfing down whatever those little dots are meant to be. A few apps have tried to recreate the original Snake experience, so what – if anything – is so special about Good Old Snake 97? As always, find out in today's review.
Features & Use
Test device: Samsung Galaxy Nexus 4.0.2
There's not that much to say about the gameplay itself. As mentioned, Snake is the grandfather of all mobile phone games, and hence it's as basic as basic can be. You must navigate a snake that munches on little dots and grows longer the more it eats. You have to prevent the snake from running into itself and/or walls, otherwise it's game over.
The developer has really tried to stayed true to that retro feel by recreating an old Nokia. The game is played using the virtual T9 keyboard on the display. True to form, there aren't many extra features; a new game can be started, a current game can be resumed, you can check out the top score and set a level of difficulty.
Bottom line:
I have to be honest and say that I found it difficult to rate this game in the sense that Good Old Snake doesn't actually do all that much, but then again neither could the original Snake game. And Good Old Snake 97 is a brilliant rendition of the original, so overall I would say that if you were a fan of the original Snake, if you're in a nostalgic mood or if you were too young (or hadn't been born) when Snake had its heyday, then Good Old Snake 97 will be right up your pixely alley.
Screen & Controls
Five stars for Good Old Snake 97 in this category. If you love old Nokias and the Snake aesthetic you won't be disappointed with what this app has to offer: it really feels like you're playing the game on a Nokia. Controls are great.
Price/Performance Ratio
Good Old Snake 97 is available for free from the Android Market. The ad banners don't bother me at all.
