BraveSmart – The Highlands Under Construction
Tested version: 1.0
Latest version: 2.0.0
Requires Android: from 2.2
A walk down nostalgia lane... all the way to the Middle Ages! BraveSmart is set in Scotland (a nod to Braveheart, geddit?). Clans no longer have to hide from Sidhe and other mythological creatures and can finally get cracking at building stuff again. If only the clans didn't stand in each other's way. What's more, there are cliffs to contend with, and sheep.
Are you BraveSmart enough to help the clans?
Features & Use
Test device: Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Android version: 4.0.4
The BraveSmart main menu consists of four elements: accessing the campaign mode, achievements and switching music and other sounds on/off.
Discover what the gameplay consists of in the first level. In every level a goal (usually building a certain number of buildings) must be attained in order to complete the level successfully. You'll receive a score and credits at the end.
Don't lose track of the goal by keeping a vigilant eye on the info box at the top of the display. This is where all relevant information is displayed.
Use the material in the sort of honeycomb in order to construct buildings. There are three elements; wood, stone and metal, which, when combined, can create a house. Houses can then also be combined to create larger buildings. Clan members trot around the field making sure that there is sufficient material. It's your job to ensure that members don't accidentally wind up inside a structure. Do so by freeing fields using a weight or laying out a universal element (using a hammer) that can be combined with the other three elements. Using these two options will deduct some of your crowns (credits) which you can purchase.
But don't be fooled into thinking that's all there is to this game: enter obstacles! I already mentioned the cliffs/rocks which can't be destroyed. There are also sheep, but they can actually be quite useful when combined as they produce coins that you can then collect.
As for achievements:
Combine five elements or use the hammer 50 times.
BraveSmart is a fun game with an easy, simple gameplay and best of all it's challenging and somewhat addictive. I'm not head over heels for the music, so I always switch it off.
Screen & Controls
BraveSmart looks like a board game and the drawings are nicely down and transmit that medieval feel.
Controls are a pleasure as they're easy to understand and use.
Speed & Stability
BraveSmart runs well: smooth and stabile. Starting the game took a wee while but then it performed nicely.
I'm no fan of 'freemium' type apps. Freemiums can be downloaded for free but then users are instigated to by something (e.g. Credits) in order to get the most out of the game.
In the case of BraveSmart you will find that you'll actually reach a point when you kind of have to buy stuff in order to continue playing. This means you'll perpetually be spending money. I prefer buying a game once to having to keep shelling out.
