System Tuner Pro – Multi-tool
Tested version: 1.4.9
Latest version: 2.6.0
Requires Android: from 1.5
Summary
After testing a plethora of fun games for you over the past week or so, we decided that we'd get serious again, just in time for the Easter / Passover holidays. So, in the spirit of true Android geekiness, we've tested a system manager for you today.
System manager and tuning apps are a dime a dozen and come in all shapes and sizes. Some are easy to use and others require an advanced degree before they can be made sense of. System Tuner Pro promises to be the ultimate manager ap for Android—find out if we agree in today's review.
Features & Use
Test device: LG Optimus Speed P990
Android version: 4.0.3
Mods: Root + CustomROM
System Tuner Pro, like most tuning apps, is a task manager, but it's also a multi tool—at least according to the developer's description.
- Task Manager
- Extended Task Killer
- Application Manager (nur für Root-User)
- Activity Manager
- Activity Recorder
- Logcat Reader
- Terminal Emulator
- System Tweaker (nur für Root-User)
- Notification & Widgets
I haven't yet come across an app that features so many options, but before we sing System Tuner's praises let's see if the features do what we'd expect them to do.
Task Manager
This is where you'll find all active apps, time frames of how long they've been running and overviews of the CPU, RAM and SD cards.
Click on an app and a detailed overview of its properties Pops up (running time, CPU + RAM strain, package List and Moore). While it's not like I can't make heads or tails of the Information listed here, I'm not the type of user who needs this type of info–I would imagine these details could be of interest to developers, though.
The essential task manager function is of course also available: killing apps. There's also a feature for freezing an app for when you which to interrupt but not end it. Cool.
Extended Task Killer
This feature is mostly integrated in the Task Manager. There is a kill-all function which can be set to automatic (kills annoying apps that flare up with every system start). A word of warning regarding this function: be careful if you choose to activate it because - unless you really know what you're doing - you may easily cause some complications in this way.
Application Manager
Use this extensive feature to secure and restore apps and monitor and change their auto start functions.User and system apps can be displayed separately so as to delete or deinstall data accordingly.
Activity Manager and Recorder
Once you start the recorder System Tuner Pro closes and the record symbol can be found in the task bar, showing that the activity has been recorded. That said, I couldn't find or retrieve my recordings…
Logcat Reader
I can't say what the difference between this Logcat and the standard one is. It allows users to save, delete and reload logs; activity is displayed using an array of colours which creates a good overview.
Terminal Emulator
Again, there isn't much to say in this regard. This function activates a similar function to the Windows cmd feature. Developers and techies might find this feature to be of interest, seeing as it allows you to give orders via the emulator.
System Tweaker
This affords you with an overview of available resources and some general info regarding the device. Auto kill settings can also be adapted here.
Notifications & Widgets
This is a great tool. Every function can be set up with a link on the homescreen, meaning you can circumvent the main menu entirely. Why is that an advantage? Find out in the next section.
Bottom line:
System Tuner Pro provides users with a standard task manager as well as a useful backup feature. The other functions could be of interest to advanced users, seeing as relevant information can be found and managed easily in this way. Newbie or 'run of the mill' users may find the features to be a bit too advanced to really make sense of.
Screen & Controls
System Tuner Pro takes a bit of time getting used to. The homescreen is somewhat confusing and finding one's way around the app isn't intuitive in the beginning. Some functions – such as the Autokiller – are harboured at several places, and the app has an overall random feel to it.
That said, once you find what you're looking for features are explained clearly and thoroughly.
Speed & Stability
System Tuner Pro runs smoothly and that's no small feat considering the amount of data it processes.
Price/Performance Ratio
System Tuner Pro is available for download for EUR 1,99. The price is a bit steep, though the app does provide a good selection of analyses tools such as Elixir and System Panel, as well as other options.
