Summary

Call me old fashioned, but I believe all adult men should be able to tie their own tie. Until recently I couldn't say that I knew how to tie anything fancy, just a regular, good old-fashioned classic knot. I was therefore curious to discover a few new tricks and thought I’d share my experience using an app that hosts instructions on how to tie a plethora of different knots. Check the review below for more information on How to knot a tie.

Features & Use

Test device: LG Optimus Black
Android version: 2.3.4

Some men lead lifestyles that require donning all different sorts of neck adornments. (Yes fellows, it isn’t all trousers and polo shirts to work, even if the Western business milieu has become decidedly more relaxed in its dress code, at least in certain sectors.) Or else you find yourself in a stressful situation that requires a classic knot, and you can’t remember how it goes. For such situations, amongst others, How to knot a tie can come in handy.

The app is about 2 Mb and can be relocated to the SD card. It requires two permissions in order to display ad banners.

The app’s main feature is a set of visual instructions on how to make different knots, namely:

  • Classic
  • Half-Windsor
  • Windsor
  • Kent
  • Christensen
  • Four-in-hand
  • Nicky

The different knots come with brief descriptions and information on when it is appropriate to wear certain knots, or which occasions call for certain knots.
The visual instructions are clear and easy enough to follow, even if you may need to double-check once or twice, especially if you are a tie tying novice. There’s no written text, which is a bit of a drawback as not all users will be able to follow the visual instructions as easily for fault of the missing text.

The app also comes with a table displaying standard shirt sizes in relation to different knots. A great feature that is sure to help give you that ultra suave, polished look.

Bottom line:

How to knot a tie is a simple app, but one that may prove to be helpful for some users. Brief but effective visual instructions help tie knots (some with more difficulty than others), and can help you touch up your cravat-knowledge. The app’s only drawback is that there are no comments or written instructions on how to tie knots.

How to knot a tie performed very fluidly and without crashing.

Section rating:

How to knot a tie is available for free from the App Center. The ads that are displayed didn’t bother me in the least.

Bow tie Downloaded to try and learn how to tie a bow tie. Is extremely difficult to follow along. Had to go somewhere else. Can't speak for the rest of the knots though.
