Summary

It feels like you could swing a bat and hit at least one alternative music app. Don’t get me wrong: I love music and am thankful for alternatives to the stock Android music player which, let's face it, isn't exactly the bee's knees. But with so many options out there, should one go for Rocket Music Player?
Find out in today’s review.

If you’re a technology geek like me you will no doubt also be able to remember the day you got your first Android device. Well, I loved my very first smartphone, but I couldn’t say the same for the rather abominable music player that came with it. Android is continuously evolving, and while the stock music player still looks a bit frumpy and dated, Play Music is a pretty good app.

Still, I like to keep my eye on alternative music apps, especially the ones that strike me has having found a good balance of cool design, easy controls and useful features. Rocket Music Player, in case you were wondering, does well on all three counts.
The way the app is set up is not completely unlike the good old Play Music app. There are tabs for artists, tracks, genres, playlists and podcasts, and the latter two can be linked to iTunes.

Navigate these categories by clicking or swiping in the upper bar.

One of Rocket Music Player’s great features is the very good equalizer function, both the preset option and the fact that users can make their own adjustments. Equalizer options can even be set and saved for a specific album. A brilliant option of people who like fiddling with audio adjustments.

With Android 4.1 there’s also an excellent adaption to the notification bar in which album art and control elements are displayed. Looks nicer than the Play Music app!

Lockscreen is also an option – and a useful one at that – but there seems to be a little bug on the loose here: when you activate the new lockscreen the standard one pops up which has to be unlocked.

Bottom line:

The Rocket Music Player is a great alternative to Play Music: it looks good, is easy to use and comes with a bunch of useful features.
A downside: it can’t access music that’s saved on a Google Music account online, whereas Play Music can.

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

The Rocket Music Player design rocks—if you like a grey, sleek kind of aesthetic, that is. However, the categories bar looks a little outdated.

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

Rocket Music Player performed well during our test runs and didn’t crash. There is, however, an unfortunate bug with the lockscreen.

Price/Performance Ratio

Section rating:

Rocket Music Player is free and available for download from Google Play. The only feature that does not come with the free version is switching audio output to the left or right channel. I for one am not missing this feature in the least, but if you are you may want to considering buying the full version for €2.99.

How can we say if this is really a good third party music app if the demo or trial of rocket is very limited to functionalities, better they open all the features/functions and give at least a 15 days trial period. Just my 2 cents.

Amazing Awesome

Seem cool but why do I have to unlock the phone from the music player then unlock the phone. I just love having to unlock my phone twice.
Matthew, Apr 11, 2012
Good stuff, don't mind contributing to devs of Android Music Player for an updated renamed version, but don't intentionally gitch the old app! Jezz

Needs work I love the equalizer option now. Need a much better UI. Should be able to skip and stop song from any screen. Ill keep app and give it some time for development. Going back to your Android music player. That app is PERFECT except for the no equalizer

Good, but not enough. Do more effort other UI, and add more functions like crossfade. ***** for free EQ (although I've paid for it already) ;-)

Only player to make a single song Repeat on Atrix 4G Got Atrix 4G to my surprise the native & other players on market couldn't repeat a single song. The phone just wouldn't! This app does! Great! Things I want... Song sorting in Albums like if song is abc ft. 123 it won't show in the album if you go through artist section. You have to go in album pane. Want Lyrics viewing support please! Other than these 2 glitches its great! Fade in/out + gapeless playbck are great! I put phone in MSC & sync through windows media player

Misleading Not what the description and pictures show. Not very user friendly. No options menu across the bottom.
Kathleen, Apr 9, 2012
Rip off The player has a lot of settings but I can only use them if I buy the $3.99 addition... the quality isn't quite as good either
Sam, Apr 8, 2012
Could be better... Why on Earth does everything have to be 'Premium this', 'Premium that'? That's my biggest problem so far but what would also be nice is if you could send/share songs directly from Rocket Player... Uninstalling for now...
Kat, Apr 8, 2012
Piece of crap It's jumpy, it's buggy. I had to uninstall it and reinstall for it to see my music. And who knows if the issue is with isyncr or this dumb app that I can't get my playlists on the "playlist screen". I'll make sure to 1-star isyncr too, but when I sync my Itunes playlist -one playlist, mind you - I get playlists that I used to have on my basic Android music player THAT AREN'T ON MY ITUNES. And NOT the playlist I'm syncing!
PatrickD, Apr 7, 2012
Pushy, aren't we? I would rather use the base music player instead of this bloated one, but you give no option. Opening the android music player brings me here. Once this is corrected I will revise my posts for both programs.
Anagallis, Apr 7, 2012
Can't quite Have to kill the app via the task manager, no quit option
Saad, Apr 7, 2012
A very functional player. One of the most important feature for stock ICS Player that is missing here is music effects, like bass booster and 3D sound. Also changeable skins would be a great addition, the current skin doesn't really suit the default theme. Also the lock screen could be improved.

Cool to use.

Yooo This music player is great and if you love loud music this is for you
Michael, Apr 6, 2012
Very good Excellent sound quality, I really like how the app stores the last point listened to. I just wish the interface looked a bit better, it looks rather dated compared to something like double twist or even the stock player on my galaxy note.
