Summary

There are a lot of Live Wallpaper apps available from Google Play and the App Center, but many of them provide only a handful of animations. Electric Sheep, on the other hand has a seemingly never-ending flow of animations in stock.

More details in today's review.

Features & Use

Section rating:

Test device: Samsung Galaxy S3
Android version: 4.0.4
Root: Yes
Modifications: None

After having installed Electric Sheep the app will download 51 animations, "created by a cyborg mind consisting of 450,000 computers and software"!
Whenever one of the computers is sleeping, it communicated with other sleeping computers via the internet and thus creates these animations. If you're curious about this and want to try it out for yourself, go ahead and download the software for Windows, OS X and Linux.

You've probably guessed that these animations wind up on your Android device. They're abstract and don't resemble anything, really, meaning that what pops up on your homescreen is always a bit of a surprise. If you're curious you can also check out the animations within the app, as well as rate them. Rating are uploaded and affect how animations are generated. According to the devs, every individual image would take approximately 30 minutes to generate on an average computer. Impressive.

A few settings are available, including the speed and flow of the animations. You can also set the app to download only when WiFi is available, if you've got a limited data package rate.

Unfortunately, you can't keep downloading animations endlessly. Once you've used up your 100 credits you can either call it a day or buy new credits (details below). I personally find the 100 credits to be perfectly sufficient for my purposes.

Bottom line:

Electric Sheep is great for live wallpaper aficionados or users who are intrigued by the fascinating technology that's behind the animations.

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

The Electric Sheep animations are always surprisingly different, sometimes nice and sometimes not so nice, but always different. Seeing as the community has a say in which animations are featured, most of them are rather nice.

The animations' dynamic is great and controls are simple.

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

Electric Sheep uses very little power, which is a pleasant surprise. Animations are relatively smooth and can be set to run even more smoothly on high end devices.

Electric Sheep didn't crash at all during our test runs.

Price/Performance Ratio

Section rating:

Electric Sheep costs EUR 1.51 and it's worth the money, IMO—if you like this aesthetic, that is. With your purchase you will receive 100 credits and these should last you for a while. 50 additional credits cost EUR 0.75.

Best live wallpaper on the market I already have the electric sheep screen saver on my PC. I was a little worried that this would eat my battery for lunch, but no problems so far.

Loveee sheepies I love the electric sheep for my computer and now having it on my phone everywhere I go is amazing!

Ok app, very unpolished. I love the pc screensaver and have been using it for years. Needless to say I was very excited when I found this app. However, that initial excitement was shortlived. It just doesn't feel like an app you would pay money for. The resolution of the videos is very low, much like the original screensaver, and there are numerous bugs on ICS. The buttons don't register half the time and there are freezing issues. It should be a free beta and not $3...

Great Port Excellent app, with only two real drawbacks. 1. Needs Android holo theme, for consistency 2. The "download credits" system in obnoxious and annoying

It slows down my phone and eats my battery, but *so* beautiful I wouldn't want to miss it. Eye candy at its best!

Awesome subconscience in motion

Masterpiece Better than any live wallpaper out there.

Behind Closed Eyelids... Works great on Xperia S as live wallpaper. Smooth fps with minimal lag at max setting.

Looks and performs poorly on Galaxy Nexus Love the screensaver on my Mac but this live wallpaper runs horribly slow and looks awful on my brand new Galaxy Nexus (ICS 4.0.2). Other people report it working well on their Galaxy Nexus phones so maybe mine is just cursed. I'll update my review it things improve.

Cool wallpaper Not worth $2. As far as I can tell, impossible to add more sheep manually. Very ugly interface. Needs to hire a professional team, not some highschool kid, to fix issues. Samsung galaxy s2

Amazing but terrible performance Can't rate this down based on the performance of my budget ZTE Vivacity, but sadly I'll never use this again on this phone, but good to know i own it for when i get a better one in a few years. 4 stars because it crashed several times in half an hour, and often it's just black. Also no explanation of what the options do. So happy to see this getting love on the android market though!!

Decent Looks cool but crashes way too often. Just had a blank wallpaper a lot of the time because it would crash. Seemed to happen a lot when I would dock my Droid X. Have stopped using it.
