Summary

Apndroid SALE! has always been known as a clever little tool to help data connection from a mobile device to the internet, an option which is especially useful for users with limited data plans. However, the last few generations of devices that have come out have had this service as an integrated feature. Find out if Apndroid SALE! is still worth it nonetheless in today's review.

Features & Use

Section rating:

Test device: HTC One S with Android 4.03

Not much has changed as far as Apndroid SALE! Primary function goes: the app prevents any internet connection via button push, by overwriting the APN (Access Point Name) so that the device no longer knows where to establish a connection to the internet. This means that all data connection of all apps and the device can be blocked by tapping on the widget or within the app itself. The current status can be displayed via the notification bar. We found this to work out perfectly and almost instantly.

The app also displays all other apps that have connected to the internet whilst the mobile network is active, dividing applications into “active” and “inactive”. This classification rests on whether apps were tapping into the mobile network.

In order to prevent further data connection applications can also be shut down, but this may not always be advisable. It would make more sense to see statistics showing the data consumption of individual apps and the device in general. These statistics should be focused on the active phase of the mobile network only, enabling informed decisions as to what to do.

Bottom line:

Apndroid SALE! does what it sets out to do very well and without much ado. That said, the app is pretty pared down so don't expect anything fancy.
Our question is: in light of this function being integrated in more devices nowadays, is there a place for Apndroid SALE!?
The app can prove to be a useful shortcut and displays certain informations in a way that makes them easy to understand and follow.
Furthermore, not all devices come with a widget that allows them to de/activate the network. Apndroid SALE! Can also be used via plugin with Locale and Tasker. These features will be of interest to users of older devices / UI versions.

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

The Apndroid SALE! UI is neat and simple, and, as an added bonus, the app is already compatible with 4.0.

In case anything should go awry (and in our experience it won't the app is super stabile), the developer has kindly integrated a few helpful texts and trouble shooting strategies. The developer is also very good at getting back to users with questions, complaints or comments, and takes suggestions into consideration (one of our colleagues from the German team had a complaint about the poor German translation of the texts within the app, and the dev promptly announced that he would integrate an option to change the language within the app).

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

Apndroid SALE! Performed very well throughout our test runs. We experienced absolutely no problems with this app.

Price/Performance Ratio

Section rating:

Apndroid SALE! is available for EUR 1.77 from the App Center or Google Play. A free version with ads is also available. While support is great, we find this price to be a bit too steep considering that it can only do so much, and that completely free alternatives are available.

PLEASE NOTE that Apndroid SALE! is currently on sale and available for only EUR 0.60. Right on!

A must have app... A must have app if you don't want to go over your monthly bandwidth limit and want to save money.

Apndroid Paid for download. Never received

Works great When I don't need 4G, the switch works quickly and I save data and saves battery as well. The only thing I would like to see on the updates is more options like switching to CDMA/LTE to CDMA only similar to the 4G Toggle app. Other than that, it's a great app.

Great app for switching off network easily This is a great application, which I've used for two years. Didn't seem to work on ICS (new phone, Galaxy S running 4.0.4), but came good after a re-install. Unfortunately on Android 4.0+ the old method (brutally mangle APN settings :) ) is no longer available, so it's now a data toggle with a process killer for stubborn network tasks. Must have on Android 2.3 and below, still useful on 4.0+

WAS the perfect solution to my problem I wanted to leave all my apps set to auto-sync, for when I use my phone with my pocket wi-fi device (or any other wi-fi), but I didn't want to go broke paying my regular phone provider's ridiculous data charges. The problem was that I couldn't shut off data without also breaking MMS. This app was exactly what I needed, and works flawlessly on my Samsung Galaxy Gio. UPDATE: APNDroid stopped working for me a while ago. On the Gio, MMS will only work when your APN type is left blank (some software bug), but for a while now, APNDroid has reset the type to "all" instead of its original setting of "blank" (only available by leaving the field blank when you first set up the APN), which breaks MMS, negating my whole reason for using it. It would also often SHOW that Internet was switched on by itself, but in reality it will no longer switch on even when I tell it to. Uninstalling APNDroid results in the proper behaviour, so I know it's not the phone. But since I'll be changing plans soon, it doesn't matter to me any more.

Works great When I don't need 4G, the switch works great and quick and I save data and save battery usage as well. All in all great app.

Finally --A quick way to extend battery power! Just what I was looking for, an easy way to toggle off individual processes, or shut off all incoming and outgoing data without also cutting off calls and emails. Batteries are not constantly being drained when I'm not actually using my smartphone. Best two bucks I've spent in a long time!

No go on ICS On Gingerbread this was a great override switch to turn on and off internet. It now has a mind of its own on ICS turning access on and off randomly. Please fix.

Good job! Sometimes takes a few seconds to work, but otherwise great!
Craig, Jul 23, 2012
Need to be repaired and updated Ive got a new galaxy s3 and most of the time it is great but sometimes it manages to switch itself on again without me accessing it can you fix this please as i can't play games properly without it connecting by itself, i had a galaxy s2 before this s3 and after using an ad blocker it stopped, apart from that it is excellent
Mike, Jul 21, 2012
Really works! Does the job simply and reliably. Incredibly fast friendly support if needed.

No locale plugin for now Separate Locale plugin should have been released prior to or at the same time as being removed from the app. App is useless to me now.
Martin Adamek, Jul 18, 2012
Locale/Tasker plugin Locale plugin, which works also for Tasker is no available as free app on Play Store under name "Apndroid Locale plug-in"

More battery life Tremendous boost in battery life between charges on my Galaxy Epic 4g. Routinely lost 30-50% charge with it idle in my pocket for an 8 hour shift. Now < 10%.
