Nine: 9GAG for Android – Hahaha, yekyekyek!
Tested version: 1.0d
Latest version: 1.3.9
Requires Android: from 2.1
Summary
9GAG is a community of people who appreciate a good laugh, especially jokes of the “one funny picture says more than a thousand words” variety.
Use 9GAG to upload photos and vote on other funny pics. The most popular images wind up in the “Hot” and “Trending” lists.
The 9GAG website seems to be very popular with a younger crowd, so it would only make sense for a good mobile Android 9GAG app to come out (seeing as the 9GAG apps that are already available aren't all that great): and it has, in the form of Nine: 9GAG for Android.
Find out what sets Nine apart from the rest in today's review.
Features & Use
Test device: Samsung Galaxy S3
Android version: 4.0.4
Root: Yes
Modifications: None
9GAG's claim to fame is largely thanks to meme pics. Said images are, however, not always all that easy to understand unless you're initiated in the 9GAG scene, so get out your pens and notebooks everyone and get GAG savvy!
Nine: 9GAG for Android is yet another inofficial 9GAG client, but this one is really worth your time if you're a 9GAG fan.
Nine is brilliantly easy to use. Start by either singing in via your 9GAG or Facebook account. The main screen's UI is nice and minimal with the different 9GAG categories listed at the top left: Hot, Trending and Vote.
Loading times are very brief. This is thanks to the fact that images are optimised on the server, which I find to be pretty impressive. Also, the Nine devs can always adapt the unofficial app to the website whenever updates are made, which means that Nine's performance is ensured to be stabile.
There are options for sharing pics via Facebook, Twitter or Google+, but the stock Android menu is only available in the pro version. Liking pics is also a pro version only bonus.
Tap an image to see comments, although, again, you can only comment yourself if you're a pro user. A full screen view of images is also possible, useful for when the font is on the smaller side.
That's really all there is to say about Nine, but before I let you go let's have a quick peak at the settings.
You can select via which service you wish to log in (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). You can also deactivate the display of the title of an image. I chose to keep the title in as the word gag often only becomes apparent once one has seen the image.
We also like that images are loaded automatically as one is scrolling, meaning you never get to the end of the list.
The only thing missing for my liking is an offline mode or at the very least a sort of bookmark so that if you quit the app and then start it up again at a later point in time, you can pick up where you left off.
Bottom line:
Nine: 9GAG for Android is a fun app that 9GAG fans are destined to appreciate.
Screen & Controls
The Nine: 9GAG for Android UI is many based on the Holo UI, so thumbs up there.
Controls are simply and easy and pretty fool-proof.
Speed & Stability
As mentioned, Nine: 9GAG for Android is quick to load thanks to images that have been optimised on the server.
The app is equally stabile and overall we are very pleased with Nine's performance in this department.
Price/Performance Ratio
Nine: 9GAG for Android is free which, of course, we like. The pro version has few more gimmicks on board and costs an even EUR 1.00.
