Where's My ... Keep an eye on everything
Tested version: 2.0
Latest version: 3.7
Requires Android: from 2.2
Summary
So long as an object is not physically grafted to my body I am likely to lose it. Gloves and scarves in the winter, but also contracts, bills and even my set of emergency keys. The latter are the types of items that simply should not go missing, which is why it makes sense to keep a central registry for certain important things. This is where the app Where's My ... comes in. Find out more in today's review.
Features & Use
Test device: Samsung Galaxy Note 2
Android version: 4.1.1
Root: No
Modifications: None
After you've started up Where's My ... you'll see that the app has two main functions: adding more items to your registry and searching the registry for items. I started with cataloguing some of my most precious items by filling out a simple form which includes a name and description section as well as an insert photo option so that you can recognise the object easily.
Items can also be designated as places for other items. For instance, my filing cabinet is an item in and of itself, but it's also the place where I store my passport.
In order to find a given object just pick it from the list in the bottom bar. All items are catalogued alphabetically. Once the item has been selected you can push a button and the item location will be revealed.
You can share your list via Facebook or Twitter, though I'm not quite sure as to what end, after all I don't want hundreds of people knowing where I keep my valuables.
You can save all of your data should you want to switch devices, though there's no syncing option.
Zooming in and out of item photos isn't possible, unfortunately. I also noticed the back button doesn't work like it's supposed to. Rather than transfer you back to whatever you were looking at last the button brings you back to the main menu, which is somewhat superfluous anyway (more details in the next section).
Bottom line:
Where's My ... is not a bad concept but I feel the application as is lacks maturity in regards to functionality, design and options.
Screen & Controls
Where's My ... falls short when it comes to design. It feels like a cross between iOS and a shiny blue something that feels very nostalgic of the 1990s. Even the app icon feels outdated (and a little creepy).
I also don't like that there are no placeholder for objects with no photos. Instead what you'll see is an ominous black box.
Controls could do with some alterations too, as they aren't very user friendly. While adding items is relatively simple, I don't quite get the sense behind the main menu which basically hosts the same two functions as the bottom bar menu (Add and Search).
Speed & Stability
Where's My ... performed well in the sense that it's fast, but it leaves something to be desired on the stability front.
Also, when you're shooting a pic of an object be sure not to turn the device as otherwise your photo is likely to not be saved at all.
Price/Performance Ratio
The app costs EUR 0.79 and for this price tag I expect a thoughtfully designed application that comes with neat functions. Where's My ... feels more like a beta app to me.
