Office 2012: PlanMaker Mobile: Excel in your pocket!
Tested version: 1.0
Latest version: 1.0
Requires Android: from 2.2
Summary
When it came to office programmes with elaborate table calculations, Microsoft Office Packet was the leader of the pack for quite some time. Today almost everyone is using Excel, and many Android smartphone/tablet users are in the market for solid, fully compatible Excel solutions.
Just because it's Christmas we'd thought we'd review an excellent Excel option for you as our app of the week: Office 2012: PlanMaker Mobile.
Features & Use
Test device:
-Samsung Galaxy Nexus 4.2.1
Upon purchasing Office 2012: PlanMaker Mobile you will receive a registry key which must be entered as soon as you start up the app. Next you will need to enter contact data which guarantees complimentary support and provides access to the service pack.
The landing screen harbours a table that's identical to Excel, as well as the overview of available functions. The table is set up with numbers for rows and letters for columns, as per usual.
Check the bottom of the display for an overview of all key features and options:
- Keyboard: Grants access to the keyboard so that you can write in the field you've selected
- File: All standard functions (save, open, etc.) can be accessed here, and there's an option for exporting the text as a PDF
- Edit: Copy, paste, etc. and changes can be made to previous steps/entries/texts
- Format: Bold, outline, italics, colours and more
- Table functions: Insert tables, delete tables, etc.
- Zoom function: Set the zoom function
- Help: Access the help feature
These features can also be found within the menu:
- File
- Edit
- View
- Format
- Table
- More (Comments, settings...)
The app's design is reminiscent of Microsoft's Excel; this is a very smart move in my opinion, as it makes using the application that much easier.
I should also mention that the file explorer can also set up Dropbox, Evernote and Google Drive accounts, as well as local files, of course. This is a major bonus as it grants fast and easy access from within the app. Another awesome feature: tables can be saved as PDF files.
Bottom line:
I'm head over heels for Office 2012: PlanMaker Mobile, an application that has turned out to be a fully functional Excel option for Android. This nifty app can afford you almost all of the same control as when using Excel regularly: managing tables, inserting comments, formatting texts, etc.
Screen & Controls
As mentioned, Office 2012: PlanMaker Mobile is made in the same spirit as Microsoft Excel, meaning that it's easy to use if you're already used to dealing with Excel.
The design is nice and discrete and geared towards user friendliness.
Speed & Stability
Office 2012: PlanMaker Mobile crashed a few times on the Galaxy Nexus, especially when dealing with very large Excel files.
Price/Performance Ratio
Office 2012: PlanMaker Mobile usually costs EUR 9.98, but as our app of the week (until December 30th) we're pleased to bring you this app at only EUR 4.99.
What you're getting is a fully compatible table calculator, and that for a special offer of almost half-off. If you miss our app of the week deal you can always take advantage of the free 30 day trial to see if the app is a good fit.
