Summary

Last month, just in time for Christmas, we reviewed PlanMaker Mobile for you and chose it as our app of the week. This week we're bringing you Office 2012: TextMaker Mobile. Does it do as well as the Excel version? Find out in our review.

Features & Use

Test device:
-Samsung Galaxy Nexus 4.2.1

If you're familiar with PlanMaker by know you'll know that after downloading Office 2012: TextMaker Mobile the first step will be to receive a license key, which I did not wind up needing in my test runs.

The landing screen brings you to the heart of the app's functionality: i.e. an empty page.
Check the bottom part of the display for the most important categories:

  • Keyboard: Access keyboard
  • File: All stock functions (open; save as; properties; send and export as PDF)
  • Edit: Copy, Paste and all other generic functions
  • Format: Bold, italics, font sizes, colours, etc.
  • Track changes and make comments: Insert comments, etc.
  • View: Set the zoom
  • Help: Access the help feature

The menu is just as clear and concise:

  • File
  • Edit
  • View
  • Format
  • Insert
  • More (Table, Comments, Changes, Statistics, Settings...)

As you can see, the menu harbours the same functions as the button display in the main view.

TextMaker is clearly based on a Microsoft Office example—a smart choice if you ask me, as this way most users shouldn't have any trouble simply diving right into editing texts.

Settings allow you to adjust the app slightly according to your personal preferences. For instance, you can activate auto correct (for capitalising words at the beginning of sentences, URLs, etc.), as well as configure and set spell check for several languages.

My personal highlight feature: the cloud integration. This little function makes it possible to sign into Dropbox, Evernote or Google Docs via the internal file explorer, and then open and edits docs from there.
Another fun feature: users can configure buttons in the two categories, meaning you can assign those functions you are likely to use the most straight to the UI.

Interesting and useful: check the statistics to see how many characters/words/paragraphs/etc. are in a given doc, as well as the average word count, a feature which – correct me if I'm wrong – not even Microsoft Word has to offer.

The only small setback we encoutered was that TextMaker Mobile will crash, not very often, but it did happen once or twice during our test runs. Also, I was not able to make use of the option to insert a graphic from the camera. The app would quite simple freeze and become unresponsive.
If it weren't for these two minor issues we would've awarded TextMaker Mobile a full five stars!

Bottom line:

Office 2012: TextMaker Mobile is just as useful and easy to use as Office 2012: PlanMaker Mobile. It works out very well and is basically a fully compatible Word solution for Android.
Navigating the app is nice and easy and I think especially tablet users will be able to benefit from this tool.
Added bonuses, such as cloud integration and PDF exporting feature, round the whole thing off nicely.

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

Office 2012: TextMaker Mobile has a lot to offer and navigating the app is a piece of cake. It resembles Microsoft Word quite closely, which should mean familiar territory for many of you.
The design suits the app's features nicely.

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

As mentioned, Office 2012: TextMaker Mobile crashes infrequently, but it has been known to crash. Aside from this the app runs well.

Price/Performance Ratio

Section rating:

Office 2012: TextMaker Mobile usually goes for €7.98 but as our app of the week (until January 20th) you can snag it up for only €4.99. A fair price considering the app's functionality.

If you're interested in testing the app before purchasing it, check out the 30 day trial period option.

Worked great for the entire trial period, broke the day I bought it! I have emailed the devs twice now with no response. I really loved the app and was happy to buy it, but the day I paid for it, the app would open my documents and then freeze, making me totally unable to edit them. If this problem were resolved, my review would be very different. Even a response would add several stars, as I think this is a good app even if there a few kinks to work out. As it stands, I am very disappointed. :(

Excellent word processor My only complaint is that it takes too long to save as a MS word format over to my Google Drive. I find that saving a file under the native format better and then transferring later.

My phone had to be reset to free resources, but textmaker works fine. Tested it on a 290 page doc!!

Missing some features other suites have Softmaker was an excellent program at the times of Windows Mobile. It included a lot of features that turned the tiny devices into micro laptops. It was based on menus that were chock-full of features and options that simply no other competitor could rival. Fast forward to now, and the software still have competitive advantages in terms of functionality. Yet that functionality is still burried in old style menus reminiscent of the past. Menu system no longer intuitive. It also lacks widgets too.

Great but lags Hands down the most robust and well made office suite available in the Play Store with one unbearable flaw. When you type with a bluetooth keyboard, the app lags resulting in skipped characters. As a fast typist, this is unacceptable and does not occur in any other apps that I have used. I am also running this on a Nexus 7 which should have more than enough power.

well done but could use an update spellcheck imo best program ive found for writing, has options like auto cap and spell check that few programs has (android office has spell check but was a horrible waste of money and time, and quickoffice pro has spell check but you need to buy it separate, though looks like a better set up program, for the price i stuck here) feels to me like kingsoft office, probably not as well set up menu wise but has a scroll bar on the side that i can click and slide to find the right page(very useful when you got over 200 pages to scroll through) and the spell check. only things i would hope they would fix is first off the spell check lets you know exactly when you miss spell a word, but its suggestions suck, i mean really bad, other programs are just as bad but it cant figure out what the word is if you accidentally replace a i with a e... also the cap first letter works about 50% of the time, overall its a great smooth program, it just needs the perks to be sup'ed up a little, maybe in an update they will improve them.

Ok Half the time i switch to some other app and then return to text maker, it loses all my work since the last save. Even worst, even if i save before switching, half the times it loses my work. Basicaly instead of loading the file that i manualy saved to, text maker loads some backup file it saved to good knows when. Insuot to injury, when i manualy open my saved file it asks me if i want to save the old file over my new file. IF YOU WORK ON IMPORTANT STUFF BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN AND WHAT AND WHERE YOU SAVE

So Far - Worthless Well, went to my Google Drive and cannot open a .doc file, cannot open a .docx file, cannot open a .pdf file. Thus far this app is absolutely worthless. After posting my initial review the publisher posted their comment. My reply ... hogwash. I am now using SmartOffice by Picsel, and having used at least five other Android office suites, SmartOffice is one of the best for its ease-of-use and intuitive interface. TextMaker was just money thrown down the drain.

Poor programme This programme has frozen on me four times now. I use it for taking notes in meetings and this has caused serious problems and I can no longer trust it. This is a shame as the programme is good and the facilities excellent but no good if it cannot be trusted. I will be looking to see if I can get a refund.

Tried all the rest, now buying the BEST! FINALLY an app that can properly display and edit bullet lists, even on imported docs! I haven't found any major formatting flaws yet, totally worth the cost. Doesn't have all the eye candy and visual polish like some of the other paid apps, but it is serviceable. Would like to see it become a little more visually appealing eventually.

Only app so far that doesn't do something weird to the format. By far my favorite office app for android. Just got tired of all of the others –and I tried a lot of them– messing up the format when I opened on a desktop or laptop after saving on my Nexus. Works perfectly when I save on dropbox and open on a different device.

Best Text editing, period. You may ask yourself. Paying $7.99 for one app? why would I do that when I can download Kingsoft? It has much more AND IT'S FREE? Simple. If you ever seriously have to sit down and write on one of these Android text editing programs for several hours, chances are you will want the fastest, most compatible and overall best. I have tried Quickoffice Pro, Office Suite, and Kingsoft Office. So far none of these programs have satisfied my need for a compatible Android Text editor. However, TextMaker Mobile is by far the best one I have found. The clutter free UI, ease of saving, variable fonts, seamless transfer of current .docx and various other files, and an unrivaled text processing speed makes this document a true gem among pool lackluster office phonies. Look this program is not perfect, it still has pesky crashes and some people have reported save issues with storage sites. Of course there is the price too. However it is just over a month old and, in my opinion, superior to any of the other apps that have been on the market for years now. If you're not sure, the full trial version is a month long.

The only one which can write ODF - and that is reason enough to buy it, for now.

Always the best! Textmaker has always been the best word application out there. I used it when I had my PDA and it's still on my laptop. I'm very glad to see it's made it's way to Android. I didn't hesitate to buy because I already know it's good. Softmaker has yet to disappoint. Now my Android Transformer tablet is complete and I challenge any netbook out there because my tablet wakes in a mere second and my document will be done first and just as good thanks to Textmaker!

Flawed I have always loved Textmaker on my PDAs, computers, and now Android. It has been the best office software out there up until installing it on my new Galaxy Note 2. It is very flawed. The cursor shows up in the wrong places so when I type it's in the wrong place. The targeting is all wrong. When I select a word and use a word suggestion, the word ends up in the middle of the next word and another word is duplicated as if copied and pasted. It is unusable on my new phone. :/
