Summary

So—we've all heard of Microsoft's PowerPoint, correct? Most of us will have even used it – multiple times – to help create school/university/work presentations. And while we've seen Android apps that can help us manage such presentations, we had yet to stumble across an app that would also allow us to create, open, edit and display a PP presentation.

Enter Office 2012: Presentations. This app promises to make all of this possible—and if the developers' Excel and Word counterparts - which we tested for you back in December and January - are anything to go by, our hopes were high going into our test runs. Find out how our App Of the Week did in today's review.

Features & Use

Section rating:

Tested on:
Samsung Galaxy Nexus 4.2.2

With the other two SoftMaker apps we tested for you, the first step was to install the license key. With Office 2012: Presentations, this was not even necessary. After the start of the app you will find yourself on the landing screen, which looks like an empty slide. A function bar with the main features is located below. Here's an overview:

  • Keyboard: To access keyboard and edit texts
  • File: To create, open and save presentations, as well as export them as PDFs
  • Edit: To undo the last step(s), copy/cut text, search for text or select slides
  • Format: Bold, cursive, lists, etc.
  • Slide: To switch between various slides or start up new slides
  • Zoom: Select display size
  • Play: Start a presentation
  • Help: Display the help section

All of these functions have sub-features which will pop up when you click them. The effect is therefore nice and tidy and rather easy to navigate. Furthermore, the sub-bars can be edited via the options menu. And if that isn't enough, you can find a few more features in the menu.

There are several view modes for seeing presentations as an overview, outline or detail view or only seeing the notes.

Another cool feature is the option to open local files as well as files stored no externally on Dropbox, Google Drive or Evernote.

The Office 2012: Presentations settings offer a few fun features such as an automatic backup function which helps ensure that your work isn't lost should the app crash. Dictionaries for several languages can be downloaded, meaning that you can use spell check in many different languages.

Bottom line:

Much like Office 2012: TextMaker Mobile and Office 2012: PlanMaker Mobile, Office 2012: Presentations impressed us. This is a nice and compact mobile version of PowerPoint that has a few options on board that will help make creating/editing/showing presentations that much easier. I especially like that there's an integrated cloud feature and a PDF export function.

All text fields can be edited, and animations were added via computer can be viewed without a problem. It isn't possible to add animations or pics from within the app, unfortunately.

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

Office 2012: Presentations comes in a great design that is suited to a T for users who want to use this app actively. It's easy to navigate and finding your way round it takes no time at all.

The display of the actual presentation is very true to life (or rather: to the version of the presentation you would see on the screen of a computer). Background pics and animations run fluidly, and overall I have so say that I've never before tested a Power Point app that has done so well in this department!

What this boils down to is that I can leave my laptop at home as of now: when I have to give a presentation I will simply cable up my smartphone/tablet and Bob's your uncle. Awesome!

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

Office 2012: Presentations performed fluidly throughout our test runs, but there were a few glitches along the road. Firstly, we would occasionally receive error reports and the app would have to be closed. Secondly, opening presentations, especially larger ones, can take a while.

Overall, Office 2012: Presentations gets a “good” rating in this category.

Price/Performance Ratio

Section rating:

Office 2012: Presentations usually goes for €7.98 but as our app of the week (11 March – 17 March) it is on sale at a special discount price of only €4.99. If you're going to go for it, now is the time to do so.

If you would like to check out the app's performance for yourself before committing, try the 30 day trial version.

Very well crafted, *AWSOME*.. !!! This product moves to SD, uses *.ttf and.. Swallows *ANY* regular MS-template I've thrown at it so far, so.. Bought all 3 of 'em, 3x *5 STAR*, so.. Thank you.. ^x^ ..!!!

Outstanding Product! Each of the Office 2012 apps by this developer, including Presentations are the first I've used that maintain all of my Windows and Macbook layouts from Microsoft Office. The apps are both beautiful visually and powerful. I've given this app 5 stars because it deserves it. But if the developer could add a feature I really like, it would be Tab support for multiple sheets like Excel uses. Great product!

Great job This software is excellent, I highly recommend it to anyone using android. Does what it claims. Great stuff

Finally an app that renders PowerPoint files correctly There are so many apps out there that don't do this right, weather be a simple gradient background, or an inserted graphic. It's still not perfect but it's a lot better than other office suite apps out there.

Fantastic software A big thank you for including sound. The only thing required now is hyperlinks to other files.

Not bad, but could be better Like the app so far, the one thing I don't like is the lag, it may be my complex slide show with a lot of graphics, but just wish there was a way to fix the lag. The pinch and zoom could also be a but smoother. I like the fact that it kept my formatting from the PC to the phone.

Page forward only, no page back!? Dear SoftMaker. Please please please, could you make it so if you press on the right side of the page , it moves to the next page, but if you press on the left, it moves to the previous page. Would make this so much more usable. I know you can do this with a couple of presses, but one press would be quick and easy, no fiddling with tiny menus. At the moment, you press anywhere and it advances to the next page. :( Would this not be a relatively easy thing to add in the next update? Will change my rating to 5 stars if you grant me this wish (can a single person's request really be heard?) Love the app otherwise. :)

Very useful As an astronomers I need to make powerpoint with lots of animation. This is the only application available that allows me to prepare my lectures without a pc. Great.

Awesome Works no problems so far. Great products overall

Was tremendously dissatisfied with this product!!!!! I purchased this product for the sole purpose of having a ppt editing app that would allow me to format the backgrounds of slides; however, this product does no more than enter and edit plain text.

Average app, bad customer service I bought due to the hype being the best. Well, its just average in my view. It cannot display properly Greek letters and it messes up custom themes. But what really gets me is that I have tried to contact the developers twice, and they did not bother to reply.

Sucks Sucks

The best PPT viewer available Embedded video is the most obvious missing feature, but other than that, this has the most functionality among PPT viewers and editors on Android.

Finally!!!! Finally, an app that supports animations in powerpoint!! It's slow and lags bad but well worth keeping!! It also has a move to sd card!! Would like option to view in landscape mode. Update: I am changing down to 1 star. This app's response time is sooooo slow that it is almost useless. Will change rating when fixed.

Layout on nexus 10 unusable The user interface displayed on nexus 10 has icons and tools so small (literally 4or5 millimeters) it is impossible to use this suite effectively. If this is fixed so menus and icons can be seen without a microscope, perhaps a more fair review can be posted. Seems useful to many on phone screens but does not at all redisplay for tablet effectively.

Lah the best on the market. PowerPoint presentation flows freely and the program is a pleasure to work with. A must have app . 10/10.

EUREKA ! FINALLY ! An app that correctly plays PPT slideshow. I tried everything (QuickOffice, Docs-2-Go, OfficeSuite, TouchShow, etc.) on my Droid Razor, and all failed to convert the animation in my slide sets. Presentations came through! Even a 55MB file, no problem. Thank you, thank you, thank you! My only constructive comment is (like previously mentioned) include support for embedded video in presentations, and, similiarly, please include support for embedded audio files (sounds effect and mp3). Otherwise EXCELLENT product. 5 Stars.
