[Rookie] Help with first run

Hey everyone!

My name is Ian and I'm very new to programming for Androids, but I do have a small background in C. I've been following the android.com basics tutorial for my first program, but I haven't been able to run my program on the AVD emulator, nor am I able to access the console to enter commands by hand as suggested in the tutorial. I couldn't even run the default "Hello world" program. I can provide screenshots if necessary, but if there are any generic rookie errors that I may be making, I'd appreciate the help as well as any other advice available.
