how do i get this input method off and go back to the basic keyboard

Is that stock? Have you tried using the menu key on the keypad or going into Language & Input from the settings screen?
Failing that, I would install swiftkey or JB 2.2 Keyboard because those both use keys.

See the keyboard in your notification bar? Drag down the bar and touch that icon to change input. (the keyboard is there when you're in a text box) Other option is touch and hold the space bar. Either of those should do it!
