I was reading about the new apk, then remembered that the last update from 4.4.3 to 4.4.4 was weird looking, different from previous OTA, but I didn't investigate because I was peeved off about it unrooting my phone. Same for my Nexus 7. I checked the Settings, Apps, All and there it was Google Play Services_5.0.84 (1259630-036). I was planning to download it, sideload.

If you have a Nexus 4 and 7, dont know about 10, check, you may already have Google Play Services_5.0.84 (1259630-036)

"A statement released a day ago saying that the Android L preview would not be available for older Nexus devices, like the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (2012) and Nexus 10, now seems to be countered by a recent discovery made by Android Police. Even though these devices fall outside of the 18 month support limit imposed by Google, they might still have a chance." Seems Loie Favre was right.

I guess Google included it in the update to Android 4.4.3, (or before?). That's one of the reasons, there are many, I like my Nexus 4 and 7; I am considering getting 10 before it disappears. The only device update I feel I need is to Nexus 5 (LTE in it), then I'm good for years. I dont change phones unless compelling utilitarian reason.

Generally if it's an official upgrade the Google Apps version will be pertinent to that upgrade, i.e. if you have a Nexus then any OTA upgrade will include the Gapps relevant to the firmware version. I have a Nexus 5 running 4.4.4 and Google Play Services_5.0.84 (1259630-038); I'd imagine that Google Play Services_5.0.84 (1259630-036) is for 4.4.3.
