I have a Xperia e3 on giffgaff I pay for 4g service and have a 4g sim and the phone is set for 4g yet on the the status bar I only get the H icon to say I am connected nothing to tell me if I am getting 4g .is this normal

Well, that's weird H/H+ means 3G network not 4G, you should be seeing LTE ! Try heading over to the Settings>Under Wireless & Network Tap More settings>Mobile Network>Network Mode Change it from auto to LTE/WCDMA... mode. See if this helps you !
