How to get Android 5.0.1 Lollipop on the Galaxy S4

Kris Carlon

The official Samsung firmware for the Galaxy S4 has been pushed in Russia, bringing Android 5.0.1 Lollipop to the device. This means the international rollout is not far away either. But you can get Android 5.0.1 on the Galaxy S4 right now, by following our install tutorial below.

How to update Galaxy S4 to Android 5.0.1 with Kies

The easiest way to install the update is by using Samsung Kies. Just download the latest version of Samsung Kies on your computer and connect your Galaxy S4 with a USB cable. Kies should notify you that there is an update available. Simply follow the steps. If Kies doesn't let you update the Android 5.0.1 firmware, you can flash it manually using Odin. Here's how to do that.

How to install Android 5.0.1 Lollipop on Galaxy S4 with Odin

Note: the Android 5.0.1 Lollipop firmware, build number I9500XXUHOA7, is official Samsung firmware for the Galaxy S4, GT-I9500. While it is Russian firmware it will also work on any international S4. Attempting to flash this firmware on carrier-branded S4's may cause problems so we don't advise it. As always, manually tinkering with your device has risks involved. Please be aware of them before proceeding.

Install Lollipop on Galaxy S4 instructions

1. Unzip the downloaded firmware zip file on your computer.

2. Launch Odin.

3. Reboot your Galaxy S4 in download mode (Volume Down + Power + Home button).

4. Connect your Galaxy S4 via USB cable to your computer and wait for Odin to recognize it (a blue box should appear next to ID:COM).

5. Make sure only Auto-Reboot and F.Reset Time are checked in Odin.

6. Make sure Re-Partition IS NOT CHECKED.

7. Click the AP button and locate the tar.md5 file in the unzipped firmware file and hit Start.

8. Wait patiently until the procedure ends and do not disconnect your S4. It may take a while.

9. You should see a green PASS message when successful.

10. Once your Galaxy S4 restarts, you should be running Android 5.0.1 Lollipop!

Restore any backed up data and if you get stuck in a bootloop or encounter some buggy behavior, reboot your S4 in Fastboot (press and hold Volume up + Power + Home) and use the volume keys to navigate and Power button to access Recovery Mode. You wan to clear cache partition and then reboot.

If you have any major bugs at startup, do a factory reset on your Galaxy S4 from Recovery Mode and then restore your data again.

How do you like Android 5.0.1 on the S4? Is there anything else you wish Samsung had done in Android Lollipop?

i need to know few things. First of all these custom roms really tempt me but on the other side its my first month using s4 and i dont want to root it since rooting voids the warranty. now please tell me if want to upgrade my firmware to lollypop, or pac man unofficially through odin, so will that root my phone or do i need a rooted phone for this purpose. and if the phone has to be rooted then can i revert it back into its initial state, reclaiming the warranty.
Help on my issue will be highly appreciated

Rooting your device will void your warranty, and you can not un-root it.
I highly advise you not to root it since it is your first month, Lollipop 5.0 will come shortly for the S4 and it is looking very great, and I don't see the need for a custom ROM, I myself have rooted my S4 but that is after the warranty expired.

But if you still intend on rooting then good luck. (:

Actually you can unroot any android just using a pc app called kingo it roots as well as unroot I've done a few times before

    • Pat Ayala 4 days ago Link

Yes you can unroot any android just using a pc app called kingo it roots as well as unroot but if you brick it there's no going back but if carrier isnt very bright you could try telling them that when you try to phone on but couldn't there they would replace it for being "under warranty" ;) a friend of mind did that it worked

Must set the phone in recovery mode and then scroll to cache rows and reset those (2) two. Or simply use to reset the phone in factory settings as the video shows below.

If I do this, can anything bad happen to my phone?

    • Ron Grocoff 1 month ago Link

Stephanie, I definitely think the odds are increased if you do not wait for the 'official' firmware update from your cellular carrier...I am waiting for my AT&T carrier to notify me when 'their' update is ready for my Samsung Galaxy S4 Active

How do I install Lollipop on the AT&T Galaxy S4 Active SGH-I537? Or is it not available for the S4 Active?

    • Ron Grocoff 1 month ago Link

Ken, I have the same phone but I am definitely waiting for the official AT&T firmware update when it notifies me on my phone...too many issues with this new firmware update and I think it is best to play it safe by waiting for the official update from AT&T

My Galaxy S4 is model GT-I9506, I'm currently working with the baddest version of android (4.4.2). I couldn't get the version of this model by Samsung Kies.
