Icy Tower 2 – A updated classic

Jay O. (translation)

In 2001 FreeLunchDesign came out with the computer game Icy Tower. There have been a lot of updates since then, but the core of the game has stayed exactly as it was the day it was launched.
Icy Tower has influenced a lot of new classics – such as Doodle Jump, for instance – but it’s still the cream of the crop, IMO, and it’s been my computer game of choice for a number of years.
Icy Tower 2 recently came out as a new and improved version for Android. It goes without saying that I was more than curious to give it a go.

Features & Use

Test device: Samsung Galaxy Note II
Android version: 4.1.1
Root: No
Modifications: None

Icy Tower 2 starts off with a brief tutorial. The game itself is easy enough to get the hang of: your character will follow your finger whenever you place it on the left or right side of the display. You can get the character to bounce higher by moving your finger in either direction.

The tower is extremely high, so there's no set goal that you're meant to achieve. That said, the higher you manage to jump the more points you'll score. You can't remain on all of the steps for an unlimited amount of time, seeing as the tower is actually disintegrating from the bottom up. Furthermore, the platforms decrease in size and become less stabile, so you have to be nimble and agile and jump upwards before you begin plummeting down. Objects can be collected along the way, the most important of which are coins with which power ups can be unlocked. Some of these power ups are:

  • Super coins: worth more than average coins
  • Wind shield: fly upwards and skip a few steps
  • Coin magnet: attract all of the coins in your proximity
  • Tower stability: the tower will remain more solid for a while

Boosters are also available; one of them will increase the amount of coins within the tower, another will give you emergency wings. And you can also change your characters appearance in exchange for coins.

Bonus coins are also obtained by advancing within a level by doing stunts such as:

  • Jump 250 steps
  • Reach the 200th step

The higher your level the more stunts you will be asked to perform in order to advance. All in all it's one thrilling ride, erm, climb!

Bottom line:

Icy Tower 2 is a simple game but also a very addictive one. It just goes to show that sometimes the simple ideas really are the best. The power ups, boosters and stunts help bring in a lot of diversity and controls are great.

Screen & Controls

Icy Tower 2 looks quite a bit like ist predecessor, just slightly more modern: the cute graphics that have a comic book style look to them.
Controls are intuitive and adaptable if you wish to make changes.

Speed & Stability

Icy Tower 2 runs smoothly and without any issues.

Price/Performance Ratio

Icy Tower 2 is available for download for free. There are options for purchasing power-ups, but this is by no means a must. The game coins you need to purchase with real money cost  a pretty penny, but if you’re looking to get coin packages you can also follow the app developers on Facebook and Twitter—this will score you some free bonus coins. Another means to get bonus coins is by downloading other apps by the same developers. Oh, and then there’s always the classic option of simply playing the game and earning your own coins.
