....Not more of a "problem" than they normally would have anyway. As the release of the iPhone 5 comes closer, so do the rumors, leaks, speculation, and photos. I’m always pretty careful about taking leaks too seriously, and when I saw these photos today on Slashgear, they looked like they could be legit. But it wasn’t the photos of the iPhone 5 that bothered me, but the title of the Slashgear article “If this is the iPhone 5, Android has a problem” that really bothers me. I mean, unless the writer of this article has X-Ray/microscopic vision, and is seeing something my puny human eyes can’t see, the only thing I see in these photos is a whole lot more of the same old thing.
The original pictures were uncovered by The Verge (via Chinese supplier iLab factory), and in all honesty I can very much imagine that this could indeed be a legit leak. I mean, it appears to be an iPhone 4S with a bigger 4 inch screen, 2 color back design, and with few parts and buttons moved a few millimeters over. It’s by no means a bad looking phone. Have a look for yourself:
That being said, I still don’t understand why Slashgear (a site I very much love and rely on for information btw) feels this device will spell such big trouble for Android. I mean, it’s an iPhone, which naturally creates competition (which is good) for Android. But why is this device in particular so dangerous?
To put it simply, it’s not. Let me rephrase that....It’s no more of a threat than the iPhone 4 or 4S was/is. If one thing is certain, it’s that iPhone users are beginning to get bored of the design and the software. If this IS the new iPhone, I think that a bit more could be desired, as Apple appeared to make multiple minimalistic changes only, but no drastic ones.
It’s starting to “all look the same”, and I saw that myself this weekend when I was in the theatre waiting for The Dark Knight Rises to start. Some friends of mine that both have iPhones simply couldn’t put down my other friends shiny new Samsung Galaxy S3 (his first Android phone). The big screen, the display, the amazing camera, and even the power to play such amazing games are all unique selling points with today's Android phones, and you can better bet that regardless of the iPhone 5’s release, 2012 will be the year that more people than ever will VERY much consider an Android device when Apple’s new flagship is released. That being said, the iPhone 5 will undoutedly be a smash hit sales wise, as it always is.
So yes Slashgear (specifically Chris Davies, author of the article), a lot of people do want the new iPhone. But there is absolutely nothing about this device, and absolutely nothing about the article in question that sheds one solitary shred of light as to why “Android has a problem”. Matter fact, if these photo’s are indeed the new iPhone, I don’t think that Android will have to worry more than they normally would....
...Apple will.

But I had an iPhone 4 as a work phone before I started at AndroidPIT, and I have to admit that the camera was really good. That being said, it wasn't THAT much better than the camera I had in my old HTC Sensation.

If this 5th generation iPhone actually works without requiring an elastic band around the device (to keep the antenna from malfunctioning), then I guess that would be the 1st & only improvement (lol) ....
If you <3 iPhones? Then I'm sure you'll be content with the iPhone 5 (which, for me doesn't seem to have any change design wise & you'd think Apple would want to start over .... & delivering something brand new); but until I get more specs (ie the OS, legit screen size, apps, features)? It would make do as a nice "overpriced" paper weight on my desk ....
If the iPhone 5 is an actual 4G Smart Phone? That will probably be the only improvement for Consumers (while Apple sells its old 3G iPhones into no contract companies) ....

I kinda smiled when I read that article last night. I guess it's just wishful thinking like backing your favorite sports team. I mean 4 inch display with big ugly bezel IS really truly revolutionary and all so we android users should all cringe in fear :-)? One could call it designer's block, but I'd rather call it designer's arrogance. Apple think they designed the "perfect" phone, and hence, in Apple's mind, since "perfection" cannot be improved upon, the basic design stays the same, year after year after year. But the initial premise on which that arrogant attitude is based is faulty - the iPhone was never really "perfect" to begin with.
And also this: Apple products are for people who *don't like change*.
Also a good point Nick! Apple has been so centered around the same designs (software and hardware wise) for the past 2 years that it seems somehow that they can't come up with a better idea! Or are they simply too afraid to take risks?
I mean lets face it...they know a thing or 2 about design. Maybe it's a bad case of "designers block"?

Poor Apple. They focus all their effort into making one phone product, with the result that there is so little room to deviate, develop or break free, and they end up in a dead end of their own making, endlessly churning out minor revisions of the same product, while the rest of the world has long since moved on.
And poor iSheep, all they can look forward to with each "new" iPhone is an incremental change to the same basic design of 2007. But hey, Apple will still sell them by the truckload to those who like their tech to be little more than a Fisher-Price toy.
Hell, Apple could re-release the very *first* iPhone, call it the iPhone 5, and I bet they'd *still* sell them by the truckload because *how would anyone know the difference*?

Still not impressed by the (borrowed) headline - I really don't see that huge customer chunk that would be just as happy with iPhone as it would be with Android - it is mostly either one or the other. There are some, sure, but you could even sell WM7 to those... ;)

LOL. That's true Stefan! 4 inches still seems awfully small when you compare it to the Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S3, and then of course the Note. I had an iPhone4 last year, and compared to my GNexus, it really does feel quite tiny.
But as you said...the tiny increase in screen size is an improvement for the marjority of iPhone users, as they have simply gotten to used to the iPhone's tiny screen that ANY increase will seem huge for them!

Being used to the 4.8 inches of the Galaxy S3 now, which still is a lot smaller than the Note, whenever I touch my old 4 inches Galaxy S now, it feels INCREDIBLY TINY! :D
I can see that 4 inches hits a sweet spot for many, though, a huge improvement for the fruit-loving fanbase. :)

For me, if there's any one feature that could make the new iPhone REALLY dangerous, its the rumor of the completely fingerprint proof screen. Whoever brings that out can have all my money!
I think why he says that is because it will be taking away a lot of the main issues people have with the iPhone, ie 4g, NFC, etc. Once apple has that and you add in there new is, assuming they make a few changes to the is, it could really spell trouble for android.
@Jeff - I noticed that too. It almost looks like a mini USB, which Apple would naturally NEVER use. Possibly a new type of connection port for the iPhone 5?
