Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 slated for October

Sterling Keys

The LG Nexus 5 news has been abuzz recently with the latest release of pictures of the device from the FCC and some pretty impressive fan high quality renders. However, Google has remained pretty tight-lipped about the device and also hasn’t mentioned much about their latest version of Android, Kit Kat. A new tip has revealed the release dates for both to be slated for mid-October of this year.

Mid-October Release Date

According to a report done by ausdroid.net based on an insider tip, the LG Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat will be released on October 14th. Sure, we’re taking this with a grain of salt at the moment as we’ve been hearing nothing but rumors in regards to this, but the time frame does fit in with previous Google announcements. However, sometimes while wading through those grains of salt, you do find some hidden gems.

Android 4.4 Details

As well, the tipster revealed some details on what some of the supposed changes we’ll see in the next version of Android. These include:

  • Firmware availability for older phones
  • Fragmentation changes (screen resizing)
  • Miracast updates
  • New Gallery Visualizations
  • New APIs in regards to animation
  • Changing the Android default palette from blue to other preset colors
  • New notification widget

With the shift away from Android Key Lime Pie and what everyone had thought was the next natural progression to Android, the changes fall into what we would expect out of an incremental update to Android 4.4. One interesting thing to note is the “Firmware availability for older phones” fits in well with some foreshadowing from Google itself on its KitKat Page:

As we said above, please take all this with a grain of salt until we receive an official announcement from Google. Until then, let the speculation reign free!

I wonder if it'll be 64bit architecture or do we have to wait for google I/O 2014? The issue is how will android keep up with developers if 64 bit takes off in a big way but the OS isn't ready.

I felt pretty chuffed when I devoured my pension on the Galaxy S3 GT-i9300 I thought I'm a cool dude for 70,with 4.1. Have had it for less than a year and already,it's like me,damned outdated and decrepit.
