Ocean Tower – How High Can You Go?

Jay O.

Higher, bigger, better—Ocean Tower! Today's review is of the type of app that I've got a real soft spot for: a simulator that allows you to play at being an architect. And more than that, in Ocean Tower you must also develop a keen business sense, as not only are you responsible for building a hotel, you have to strategically think how you will achieve the greatest successes with it, too. And if that isn't enough: in Ocean Tower not only to you build a tower that can reach all the way up to the atmosphere, you also dig down deep into the ground.

Read on for all the details!

Features & Use

Test device: LG Optimus Speed P990
Android version: 4.0.4
Mods: Root + CustomROM

Please note that Ocean Tower is a whopping 48 MB, so make sure you can actually accommodate it before installing.

The main menu is quite sparse, which I think is always a good thing: stick to the essentials, people! That said, an option for dialing down/switching of the music is accessible right from the main menu.

The first time you quick off I recommend following the tutorial that does a good job at explaining the game to first time users.

As for building a hotel and a business, all you have to do is use your common sense: first you have to build a few floors worth of hotel, then you have to draw guests in by building a cafe and a little boutique or gift shop. Attracting guests is important as you rely on their money to continue building. And build you must: as soon as your hotel has reached four floors, a cafe and two shops you will be asked to increase it by 16%. A revenue is needed in order to finance this expansion, and if you don't have the necessary funds I suggest letting the app run in the background until the amount has been generated.

As for the logistics, there are plenty of constructions means available, and more that are activated as you play. Other factors have to be considered as well, such as food, shopping options, employment and, of course, crowd magnets (such as underwater safaris).
It takes money to build all of this, and in order to amass the required amount I had to wait a good 45 minutes.
While you're waiting around for the money to trickle in, why not read up on hotel related information. This will make it easier to read the symbols for efficiency, cash and credits.

There's no need to purchase credits seeing as you receive them as tips from satisifed submarine guests (yes, there's a submarine!).

Check out your hotels highest tower, its eco balance and food and energy resources in the outside view.

Bottom line:

Ocean Tower is the kind of game you can keep at over longer periods of time—and in a way you can't really get around playing for longer periods due to all the waiting around for cash inflow. This is the kind of game that's more of a virtual project than something fast and fun to play for five minutes here and there.

Screen & Controls

Ocean Tower controls are easy breezy thanks to the charming tutorial gal who sets you off on the right path.

Graphics are in 2D and come with lots of nice details.

Speed & Stability

Ocean Tower ran smoothly throughout our test runs, but it takes a while to load. While it runs without any lagging whatsoever, you have to be quite patient with this game, which is a big turn off for a lot of gamers.

Price/Performance Ratio

Ocean Tower can be downloaded for free from our App Center.
