WHOA! Bet you didn't see that coming did ya? All the talk of how awesome the Samsung Galaxy S3 will be, it's insane benchmarks, the rumored photos and specs....and now all of a sudden this? Well you heard right...there is indeed one very...VERY good reason that I may be holding off on getting an S3, and I will go as far as to say that if this piece of information I've read about does actually happen, I will DEFINITELY not be buying this phone. Why? Because of the information I have read reports of in regards to the next Nexus phone, that's why.

The Rumor
So what am I rambling on about? Well, it's being reported (still a rumor at this point, but making pretty big noise) that Google has picked the next OEM for their upcoming Nexus phone. Who was their choice? According to this report, Google has went with Samsung, making it the 3rd back to back to back time that they would be producing Google's Nexus device. So why does this matter?
The History of Samsung Nexus Phones
Well think about it. The Samsung Galaxy S came out, which was a very good phone. But then the Nexus S came out, which was pretty much a sexier looking Galaxy S with more or less the same hardware (not exact), and the Google goodies. No Touchwiz. Then the Samsung Galaxy S2 came out, which was and remains THE Android phone that consumers have fell in love with the most. But again, then Samsung released the Galaxy Nexus, which has more or less the same hardware specs (processors weren't the same (S2) Exynos 4210 vs (Nexus) Exynos 4260, ect), but was more or less a sexier version of the Galaxy S2 with all the stock Google goodies. Again..no touchwiz. What am I getting at here?
The Benefits of Waiting
Well, if, and I do emphasize the word IF, Samsung is making the next Nexus phone, it would most likely be a sexier version of the Galaxx S3, no Touchwiz, and all the Google goodies I've come to love in Nexus phones. Rooting it would be a cakewalk. The updates would come WAY faster if it had stock Android, as Samsung isn't known for being the fastest at rolling out updates (btw Samsung...where's the ICS update for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 that I bought 9 months ago?). Up until now, and this is naturally a matter of personal taste, I have never been soooooo crazy about the design of the Samsung Galaxy S and S2. They felt too plasticy to me, which is why I abandoned the S2 for the HTC Sensation. But the Galaxy S and Galaxy Nexus are a different story. I LOVE how my Nexus feels in my hand, and Samsung is really getting better at creating appealing designs for their phones and tablets.
And who knows...maybe Samsung would shock us all and include their new Exynos 5250 2Ghz dual core chipset in the device, which many claim outperforms their current quad core chip. Also, the likely possibility that this device would be the first phone to run Android Jellybean only makes it an even more tempting choice. Man oh man...this is a hard one.
Bottom Line
I guess of course I could go for the Galaxy S3, and then sell it in a few months if we get confirmation that Samsung is making the next Nexus device. Keep in mind, again, that this is only a rumor right now, and a little hard to believe considering Samsung has already made the last 2 Nexus phones. Then again, with the amazing numbers that Samsung is pushing, and the fact that they are not only consumers preferred choice when it comes to purchasing an Android phone, but also are quickly becoming a monopoly when it comes to Andorid devices, it wouldn't be that much of a shocker if they pushed out Google's next baby.
The only bad thing is that the next Nexus phone won't come out until the end of the year, which is indeed a bit of a wait. But then again, being able to purchase the phone on the Google Play Store directly is also an idea that I like. What do you guys think? Galaxy S3, or Samsung Nexus phone? For me personally, the choice of having a very possibly sexier looking Galaxy S3, running stock Android Jellybean, and full of other Google goodies is a bit too hard to pass up.

The....wait....will...KILL...me! LOL! Thats why I guess I would still debate getting the S3, and then selling it if Samsung did indeed make the next Nexus. Im still hoping for a miracle and that Google and Motorola make the next Nexus phone together, but sadly it doesnt appear that will happen :(

The Galaxy Nexus was similar enough to my GalaxyS2 that I did not feel like I was missing anything. Even though the nexus may have been "better."
However, if I had no phone I would buy the Nexus...So waiting until Google announces the next version of Nexus is a way to get an even better version of the next Galaxy... but the problem is the wait...it always seems too long :-)

@ijhaye - Of course my dream would be to see a Motorola Nexus that Google and Moto make together, but it seems that wont happen. HTC is another option, but for me personally, with the Gs3 around the corner, a new Nexus Samsung phone could be a sweet choice for 2012. I do get your point, but at the same time, if most OEMS arent moving phones, the one that is moving them very well has an advantage.
@Sean - I had ICS on my sensation as well (rooted) and LOVED it. Stock is the way to go for me personally.
@Cam - I totally agree on the dual core point..unless its Samsungs new dual core 2Ghz chip **wink**
this works great for me a new nexus probably wont release till very late this year or early next year so my contract for my current GNEX will nearly be up and i can simply swap so needles to say the s3 isnt even on my radar atm and if they confirm this rumour i wont even no what the s3 is haha
also anyone releasing a top end phone from this point on that isnt dual core is asking for failure
I've only had 2 android phones and both have been HTC.
I really like the sense skin but I'm liking and getting used to almost stock ICS on my sensation. It's made me think about getting a Nexus as my next phone. I've never had a Samsung but I've liked the S2 that friends have got.
Having said that I'm a fan of Acer hardware and have had PCs and a laptop. I nearly got a liquid as my first Android so I'd like to see an Acer Nexus.
@Eric-- HTC is a fine choice but what about the other OEM's ( Sony, LG, Motorola, etc) I thought the Nexus program was more about the direction Android should be going and NOT about selling the most phones. I really thought it was supposed to be a product roadmap for the other OEMs to follow or surpass.
This is a very good point. Thats why I actually did that article on Samsung slowly becoming a monopoly. In the end, it wouldn't be good if that happened.
The problem is, for Google it's also hard to turn them down, as they are the ONLY OEM that's currently moving massive amounts of Android devices. HTC should really get on the ball again, as the Nexus One was one of the best phones I ever owned. I know they could do a good Nexus phone, but they need to innovate a bit more design-wise now, as their phones are starting to really all look more or less the same. :(
this whole thing bothers me becasue its changing the Nexus program. I certainly HOPE, its not samsung again. It NEEDS to be another OEM so that Google can show off the breadth and depth of Android. Its starting to feel more and more like Samsung Android and less about Android as a platform. I'd like to see a Nexus device built by Sony, LG, or Acer, anyone that can help show off the creativity and OPENESS Android is supposed to represent.
I think samsung does great work but this isn't about them, this is about the Nexus program and openess as i understood it. It just feels like things are changing and I'm not sure why.
No not yet. But I have a feeling the next Nexus phone will be what it ships with first.
When will the first 'out-of-the-box' Jellybean phone be released? Do we have any idea?
@Unzunoff - Thats how I feel as well. Sense is the only acceptable skin in my book, but for me personally, stock android is really were its at. I dont want to see Touchwiz Jellybean!
I completely agree. I usually get a phone every year, so as soon as I heard about this, I ordered the Galaxy Nexus.
This will be my phone for this year and the next Nexus which will have similar and slightly better hardware than the S3 will be my next phone.
Vanilla android is the way to go, although Sense 4.0 is not too bad either.

@Stefan - I see your point, but I meant more hardware wise. The form being completely different is exactly what I am saying, as I didnt like the form or feel of the S2, but loved it on the Galaxy Nexus.
Same goes with the Galaxy S and Nexus S. Very similar hardware. 2 totally different phones.

I couldn't disagree more that the Galaxy Nexus is a Touchwiz-less version of the Galaxy S II. The form is completely different, the button configuration is completely different, the chipset is completely different, the resolution is much higher, and the OS was for a long time much newer.
The Nexus S was a Galaxy S at its heart, the Galaxy Nexus has no brother.
