Samsung Galaxy S4 update to Android 4.4.2 littered with bugs

Anthony Muzonzini
76

The Samsung Galaxy S4 update has been rolled out recently to carriers in the United States and to international models of the phone as well. The firmware update of the phone is supposed to bring in enhancements to the performance of the phone but apparently it is actually doing the opposite. Reports seems to indicate that the update is littered with several bugs that seem quite serious.

The most noticeable effect of Android 4.4.2 on the Samsung Galaxy S4 has been the effect on the battery life of the phone. Users have reported a drastic decrease in the battery life of the device since updating to the latest software. Apparently for one user, the battery dropped to 30% after installing the update from 100% and this was after about 20 minutes of browsing and 2 hours and 40 minutes of idleness. This means that battery was depleted by 70% by almost three hours of no work.

Others are complaining that the update results in a complete mess when it comes to the performance of the phone. Reports claim that the phone now lags when switching apps and going back to the home screen takes longer than before. Also using the home screen button also sometimes brings up the menu of apps that are currently running. Below is a video which shows some of the issues in action.

Link to Video

The last problem that has gotten a lot of attention since the update is the black lock screen. Basically, the bug causes the color of the lock screen to a plain black color. Users can unlock the phone using the black screen but that also depends on the amount of familiarity that the user has with his or her phone since that requires a little bit of experience. There hasn’t been any official word from Samsung on whether there is going to be a bug fix update. Apparently going to the settings > lockscreen > lock screen widgets > clock or personal message > clock will get rid of the black screen permanently.

Sure have experienced these symptoms… all of them. Plus when composing a SMS or doing anything that requires the keyboard, I experience serious lag. Running A.I. Type (paid version) memory also appears to be near maxed, I find different apps running in background that I javent even openned, and have no reason running. This update is a huge drain on resources.

I have experienced some similar issues, battery life rapidly draining and the device shutting off without warning, along with freezing, loss of mobile data (it says I've got signal and h+ tried to rectify by a quick flip of flight mode but the button freezes as if depressed) if restarting the phone when any of the above occurs 9/10 times the device doesn't get past the Samsung initial load screen if it does it then goes into a loop of restarting and will only turn on when reconnected to a charger (which promptly tells me I have 1/3 battery)

I've noticed that since the update the Android os is using up more battery than before, the home button isn't as responsive and there's a serious lag trying to return to the home screen. Hopefully a fix will come soon. It's very frustrating to go from a phone that was very fast and snappy to what I'm dealing with now.

I am experiencing the battery drain, about as drastically as the person mentioned in the article. I have tried downloading battery saving apps to mitigate it and it's still terrible. Can't make it without a midday charge and by the end of the day it's dead again.

I had the severe battery drain on my phone with the update. Went from 100% at 10am to a dead battery 3pm. I cleared my cache and did a factory reset and that problem went away. Battery life has been great since then. Hope this helps some people.

I haven't noticed any lag at all or the black screen but I have noticed that my battery isn't lasting as long as it did before the update BUT the big issue for me is that it takes at least 4 hours to charge my battery fully. My battery charges so slow that if I'm texting on my phone and its charging at the same time the battery percentage doesn't move, and sometimes my battery will actually drain even if it's plugged in

The black screen and lag plagued me for weeks now. I wanted to throw my phone. Today I pulled the SD card and battery. Replaced the battery and everything worked. I rebooted a few times and reinserted the SD card. I then reopened the Gallery and Camera to make sure the settings went back to the SD card.
All is working snappy again. I'll keep an eye on the battery performance. I traditionally get a 10% loss per hour so the phone lasts aprox 10 hours per day.
I've noticed a few anomalies, most notably, the Wireless connections I once had were all lost and needed to be reconnected.
I'm thinking there are symbolic links attached to the card which may need to be reset and booting without the card resolves the problem.
For the record, I tried all the normal course of action, wiping cache both in hardware and os modes, reapplying firmware upgrade via ODIN, pulling the battery and leaving out before reinstalling and rebooting, turning off the lock screen security, disabling proximity sensor..none of this worked until I pulled the SD card and booted without.

I'm hoping this not only helps those suffering but also leads Samsung toward a permanent fix/patch.

Ditto to the previous comments. In addition wifi conections became unstable. .dropped connections fall back to cell data. Lost wifi passwords several times. Cell data consumption skyrocketed. Paid penalty to att for excessive consumption. Kitkat generally unstable in comparison to jellybean. I would compare jellybean stability to IOS. Kitkat compares to an early beta. Generaly a pain you have to fix all the time.. very disapointing.

When I connect to my home Wifi, it brings up a security alert that an unauthorized device is trying to access my phone. I have folders on my home screen with apps like pinterest or Facebook. If I open from the folder and then hit the home button, it takes me back to the "popup" version of the folder. Issues I didn't have prior to the update.

I've experienced all for the aforementioned bugs, actually. Additionally, one bug that's admittedly not a big deal but is still annoying is: when I'm listening to music (on both, the stock music player and Google Play Music) the tracks end anywhere from a couple seconds to 20 seconds or more before the actual end of the song. In other words: it abruptly switches to the next track 2-20 seconds prior to the song's end.

Another problem is that if I don't press the lock button, the screen will stay on. Normally, I have my screen set to go off after 15 seconds of inactivity, but that hardly seems to matter most of the time. Now, I'm constantly having to double check to see if my screen turns off when I'm not actively using my phone.

My device as supplied (HK firmware) was terribly laggy, unstable and power hungry - I was never able to open S Health for example: out would crash the phone, yet it was always the biggest user of battery power. Performance was worse than my old Nexus dual core. Since the update my battery life has increased from 7 hours to nearly 3 days, and performance is dramatically improved. I updated manually using the German release firmware.

With the new update my phone freezes up when I try to dial out or answer a call. Web browsing is also slower. On my lock screen I have apps on the bottom so when I swipe up it is supposed to open to that app directly but that doesn't work anymore. Also, this autocorrect is fucking annoying

Looks to me, that Samsung can not do a serious os update at all.
Some of the same problems ocurred in the 4.3 update for the S3.
If you buy a Samsung device, then it is best never to do any update.
They might invest less time on updates, than on the devellopment of
    new device's launch software.
I think that they can affort that, solely based on how big they are.
HTC One or Moto-G for me next time.

    this is sooooo typically Samsung.
there is a new flagship phone announced and (pre-order) available and their previous top offering is suddenly invested with bugs in the newest release. it was the same with the S2 when the S3 came and the same when the S4 came.

    most simple solution: http://get.cm
CynologyMod installer does all the work for you and soon you'll be a very happy S4 user again, like me.

Have not had any problems with the black screen. The home button problem can easily be people holding to long which has always opened the "running apps" page and as far as the battery life goes. that usually happens after an update like this. The phone has to get used to the new OS it will be back to normal after a short period of time.

Besides the battery problem as others pointed, another problem I have encountered is that "long press" of return key used to bring up multi window whilst using any app for that matter. It seems that that functionality is no longer working. You actually have to exit the app you are using and then try the long press thingy. Sad that multi-tasking requires so much struggle.

The only problem I've had since updating yesterday is the home button. Though, none of the things listet above has happened. My problem is that nothing happens when I press the home button. If I hold it in, the task manager comes up, and a double click opens S Voice. Anyone else had the problem? It's really irritating that I have to close whatever I'm doing to open a new app...

I actually got increased battery life, especially when I utilize the active apps killer built into my phone. However, the lag and other associated symptoms with the keyboard, etc are pretty evident. The other thing that makes me crazy is the notifications are choppy. Like, even short sounds are interrupted and broken up badly. Even the sound the phone makes to confirm it is being charged breaks up. This is something I remember from Android 2.whatever. Not exactly something I sit and think, "Yeah, that's still acceptable." So the lag and the sound glitches for sure. I have had no issues (knock on wood) with my lock screen or anything else mentioned though. Battery life could use a boost but I have heavy use on my phone and it's still an imperfect system

Update sucked up all my data allowance.
After the update this morning, I briefly connected to a couple of internet sites which I have been using for years (and I never had any problems with them. My monthly data usage has been consistently about 500mb). The I stopped using the phone. However, I noticed that the phone got a bit unusually hot, but didn't do anything about it. About an hour later, I got a text message from the operator saying I'd used up all my data allowance for the month. Apparently, within about an hour, I managed to use about 2GB data. I was very horrified and angry as I really didn't do anything out of ordinary. Certainly not downloading any video or streaming music.
I checked the data usage, it shows that in the internet browser, the background used all that data. However, I don't know how that could happen. Has anyone else got similar issue? Does anyone have any suggestion on how to check how the data allowance went missing?

The biggest bug I think is related to phone calls (the main function of a phone). When I call somebody or when I answer to an incoming call, the phone just stay silent and do nothing unless you try a next time. it happened to me many times since I recieve the update but never before!

I'm having the battery life issue, though not as bad as others. My worst problem is the frequency that the phone freezes while it's charging. I'm now having to get in the habit of restarting the phone every morning because I can't trust that texts or phone calls will get through. Everything appears to work until I try to call or text then I find out the phone has been frozen. When I restart I'll get texts and voice messages from hours before. Never had this issue until the 4.4.2 update!

I have read over a lot of the comments and to be honest I am starting to get similar issues on Android 4.3 with the S4. The issues were not there at first, but for the past month the phone will go into a reboot loop until I put it on a charger, then the charge will be something above 15 % instantly. Battery life has significantly dropped and the phone gets warmer than usual. Also the lag is present when typing and choppy sounds. This issue may be to do with Samsung Apps rather than the 4.4.2 update itself. I am using 4.3 still, only things updated were Samsung Applications. A factory reset solved the issues for now, but will see what happens when the Samsung Apps are updated again.

This might point more to the issue hopefully.

    "downgrades" in v4.4

    1. The notification bar is now monochrome like an old flip phone.
    2. Notification tones are now glitchy sounding when receiving a text.
    3. S voice now sounds more artificial.
    4. S voice sometimes gets stuck constantly notifying you of a received message no matter what command you give it.
    5. You no longer have access to every button in the notification bar. You can pick half of them to have quick access to.
    6. Toggling mobile data is no longer possible through the notification bar. Hurray for service providers! $$
    7. Wi-fi will drop to mobile data if the connection is unstable or login required access. Hurray for service providers! $$
    8. Battery drains more quickly.
    9. Lag when bringing up the type pad after clicking on a text form in the browser.
    10. The type pad now annoyingly auto corrects with the space bar.
    11. Lookout security app is installed without your consent. Power draining
    12. Display through the view case window is sometimes out of frame. (Spigen slim armor view)
    13. Notifications are no longer displayed through the view case window. Except incoming phone calls.
    14. Clicking the home button with view case closed no longer displays time and notifications.
    15. Sometimes Texts and messages sent through other apps such as tinder will not be received until you turn off Wi-fi (turning on mobile data

Battery drainage is dramatic, approximately 40% compared to 4.3 . Same happened when updating from 4.2 to 4.3. battery dead in 5 hours. occasionally battery will go dead in 3 -4 hours and phone gets extremely hot! Samsung s4 I9505. truly disappointed.

It seems to me that SamGONE is really working very hard at becoming just that "SamGONE" They are making mistakes that are not expected from a technological giant. The really bad thing is that they don`t seem to even worry about it. &(% of respondents in a poll indicated that they will most definitely NOT replace their curren t Samsung devices with new devices from the same company and still SamGONE keeps on making unforgiveable mistakes.

So for me, as one of the few 79%`ers, I will not be replacing with with a device from the same manufacturer. Rather looking at LG or HTC.

Since I did the upgrade to 4.4.2 on my GS4, my Email stopped working.. every time I entered Email, a small notification popped up stating "Sync turned off.." Then when refreshing my email, nuthin' happens.. the icon just circles around endlessly with no email arriving.. Hmm, maybe somethin' to do with this sync crap... f**ked around with Sync On/ Off, Master Sync enabled/ disabled (which BTW is under Network Usage). All to no avail.. I can't use the Email app, I need to use the GMail app for email, which is simply unacceptable FREAKIN' BS... So, took extreme pleasure in smashin' the crap outta the GS4.. it is dead and I feel wonderful... Collecting my new Iphone 5s a little later... F**k those Gandroid aholes.. I don't pay for CRAP.. Never experienced anything so bad with a phone before. Since updating last week, the battery runs dry halfway through the day on minimum use and similarly to others here, it has installed and set apps running in the background. About eight apps were deleted and several, including Internet, Twitter, Facebook the camera and even some settings cause it to lock up and crash. Sending an SMS or email takes half the day now, just hanging at sending. It won't switch off or restart freezing on the blue O2 screen, requiring a battery removal process. Looks like I'll have to risk a root process, in order for my battery to last the length of the day! Unbelievably shoddy work.

OMG where do I start???? I have not had a phone since the 24th of march. I have done everything from soft re-sets to down right factory resets to no avail. I have been passed around to 6 different sprint stores that have not even taken the back off of my phone..(NOT ONE) Ive driven Pretty far away to be told sorry nothing we can do. (again NOT EVEN OPENING THE BACK OF MY PHONE)! I can sit at home all day long and play games on the phone as long as its plugged in ( YES I HAVE TO HAVE A CONSTANT POWER SOURCE TOO) with my very good internet at home I have no issues with that, but I cant receive one call or one text. the only way I can make a call is to reset my phone... for those of you sprint customers I can help you with a few codes to get a signal for maybe 1/2 hour but you have to have a signal first to do it. ## 72786#... or ## 87383# but it only works for a short time maybe 20 min if your lucky. So my issues to recap are no signal for phone at all and battery drain so bad it takes ALL day to charge and less than 3 hours of no use at all to drain to empty.

HERE IS how mine was FIXED
I had updated my phone after bought it about 6 weeks ago, everything worked great had up to 3- days battery life then poof my screen started flashing yesterday, then my internet browser quit then all kinds of apps stopped working, I cleared all my caches, deleted some apps, nothing seemed to help. I couldnt even connect my phone to the computer to save data, couldnt move data to sd card. I finally managed to save my data, by some fluke it connected to my computer. I deleted all my photos and videos. Then I tried 2- final things took out my sd card when it was powered off and took the screen security pattern off, I am not sure which fixed it but it is back to normal!! I was literally seconds away from a reset!

After Upgrading, I was able to transfer music with no problem but now I've been experiencing problems with a number of Apps, most notably, the music apps, Pandora and the Stock music player. Now, all songs cut off five seconds from their ending before switching to the next song as well as stuttering, forcing me to restart the music apps.

Thanks for writing this! Now I know I'm not crazy! My phone loses charge if it's plugged in and I'm using it. I thought that was the weirdest thing but it happened and I was like... excuse me?! But I think my major issue has been the bluetooth. I use my phone for music and podcasts especially when I'm in the car. I hook it up in the car (brand new car so I know it's not the vehicle) and it disconnects itself, reconnects itself and even ends calls whenever it's hooked up on the bluetooth.

Are they coming out with a fix at any point soon?

Verizon just pushed the update to my phone about a week ago - weeks after it was released. It has some serious flaws.
First, when in power saving mode, the wifi browsing speeds are significantly reduced. I can no longer use my phone in power saving mode with any apps that require connectivity, which is essentially all of them.
Second, the newest version of the OS is not compatible with the latest version of the Facebook app. Facebook constantly crashes, and in turn my phone will crash too. I had to completely uninstall the app.
Several other apps were not working properly after the update. I had to uninstall and reinstall them before they would load properly.
I have definitely noticed the lag when opening apps.
As for the lock screen, I have only had problems with it after Facebook crashed and wouldn't be able to unlock the phone at all. Several times I had no choice but to remove the battery.
I was having the problem with the home button bringing up the open apps list before the update but that seems to have resolved.
I haven't noticed any change in battery life.
I am not happy with this version of android.

Since the update I have experienced the same problem someone stated above. ..trying to make a call and it doesn't ring. I have to restart my phone to get it to work. Also, videos don't play clearly! They move an jump around like a t.v. that has lost reception making it impossible to view anything. This happens with ads as a well as youtube videos. I have tried taking the battery out, restarting my phone numerous times only to have it work maybe once then go back to the glitch. Very frustrating!

Immediately after upgrading to the new Android 4.4 O/S my Galaxy S4 became almost useless. Prior to the upgrade I was using less than 4% battery per hour, one charge would last me all day. After the upgrade battery usage ballooned to a staggering 8% to 12% per hour if I don't use it much. My battery completely discharged overnight from 100% in only 8 hours, with zero usage. Before the upgrade I would have used less than 10% battery. I shut down everything possible and even limited maximum CPU power, but it does not help. My screen locks up for no apparent reason. Holding down the power key multiple times will sometimes cause a reboot. Other times I have to physically remove the battery to get it to reboot. My phone went from the most incredible phone I have ever owned to a piece of crap in about 20 minutes. Can I back down the O/S upgrade?

It is really awful! Battery life is super short now. Super lag issues in regards to moving from screen to screen or opening new apps. Also when waking up the phone doesn't always respond quickly anymore. Also serious lag issues with the keyboard now, speaking mainly for swype since that is all I use. But it is really bad, seriously hope that they do a patch soon. I am having to restart my phone a lot just to make it work properly for a short period of time. Ridiculous problems with a phone that only a month or so ago was super sharp and speedy to now be this way. Super bummed.

Just got this update from AT&T yesterday. Experiencing the lag, the black screen, and the battery issue. I can't believe they'd roll this out knowing these issues have been around since March.
