Sony Xperia Z1 Mini spotted

We may not have been as excited about the Xperia Z1 in the flesh as we initially expected to be, but that doesn't mean it's not a fantastic device nonetheless – we do tend to be a little hyper-critical and over-expectant sometimes! And the confirmation of a Xperia Z1 Mini that we reported on a while back had me especially excited. We now have an image of the Xperia Z1 Mini and it looks great!

For those of you who don't remember, or who haven't even heard about the Xperia Z1 Mini until now, the reason it's such an interesting device is because it will basically be a Xperia Z1 in a smaller chassis. That's right, it will basically have the same hardware specs, meaning the mini flagship landscape will have a new gladiator swaggering around, knocking all other pretenders out of the arena.

If the rumors are true, the Xperia Z1 Mini, which I still want to call the Honami Mini (after its production codename), will run on a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and handle your demands with 2 GB RAM. Compared to the other mini models out there from Samsung and HTC, which generally have a slower processor, half as many cores and less RAM than their full-sized originals, the Xperia Z1 will be all its bigger brother is, but in a smaller package. Other minis also tend to have a weaker camera well. Not so the Xperia Z1 Mini.

The mini model of Sony's new flagship will feature the same whopping 20.7 MP camera as the full-sized model, putting it so far ahead of its competition there simply won't be any competition, even if our test of the Xperia Z1 camera wasn't exactly what we expected. This camera is, nevertheless, the highest resolution camera on any Android smartphone right now. The screen will, however, take a hit: of course it will be smaller, at 4.3-inches and 720p HD display (1,280x720 pixels) but it's going to be a beautiful device despite the smaller display. It will undoubtedly also feel better in the hand too. The specs we've heard so far are:

Processor Quad-core, Snapdragon 800 at 2.3 GHz
RAM 2 GB
Display 4.3 inch, 720p (1280x720 pixels)
(Rear) Camera 20.7 MP 1/2.3" f2.0 Sony G Lens
Internal Memory 8/16 GB + expandable microSD
Battery 2,400 mAh

Take those with a grain of salt, as we cannot confirm them at this point, but Sony certainly don't seem to be denying them and with this image appearing of the Xperia Z1 Mini alongside the just released Xperia Z1 it seems entirely feasible to say the same hardware made it into the smaller housing as well. But with a speculated CES launch (January 2014) there's a lot of time for things to change in the meantime. I just want to know, what's Sony waiting for? With the iPhone 5C and Nexus 5 on the horizon and the Xiaomi Mi3 possibly going global, there will be plenty of competition appearing in the market in the near future.

Have you seen the Xperia Z1 yet? Would you buy it in a smaller package?
