Some of you may have shared the dream of being the world’s best football/soccer player with me. Showing off one’s skills on that vast green terrain—that was my non plus ultra childhood daydream.
TIPP-KICK Championship is based on the popular table football/soccer game and promises longevity and excitement thanks to its unique gameplay.
TIPP-KICK Championship provides a virtual gaming experience that is very close to what you might be familiar with from having played the table version: Tap on the player’s head and he will extend a leg and kick them ball.
Pick a team; there are over 100 to choose from and England, Germany, Italy and Spain are represented. Decide whether a match should last four, six, eight or ten minutes.
There’s a tutorial explaining how a match is played. In a nutshell: The black or white side of the ball determines who is to go first. Once you’ve determined at what angle the ball may be kicked at, hit the red pin. The faster you pull it down, the mightier the kick. Defence is quite another story: Bring out your star player to block off a shot. The goalie, who you control manually, can be positioned in the appropriate corner so as to fend off the ball.
Take your chances against the AI or else try playing against another player on the same device, an option which I found to work out surprisingly well.
The app’s clear highlight is the excellent Championship mode. This is where a gamer can name the team and the individual players, as well as create a football/soccer tricot and then step up against one of the four nations mentioned earlier. You start at the bottom and so have to play skilfully and with determination in order to climb to the top. This aspect adds to the game’s longevity.
Both single and multiplayer modes boast a neat new feature: Each team comes with a card that reveals the team’s strength. The tables are more detailed as well and everything feels easier to grasp.
More improvements and fun new additions can be found in the game itself. We are loving the new and improved grass optics and overall attention to detail. There are lots of settings options and the players can be controlled more precisely (especially the goalie). The gaming experience is thus a lot smoother and can be personalised, for instance by adding a vibrate feature to certain buttons.
We often find football/soccer games clumsy to control via the touchscreen, and TIPP-KICK Championship makes a welcome change. Plus, fans of the original table game will be happy to revisit their old favourite and see how it has been adapted for a virtual gaming experience.
Over 100 teams for four nations and the excellent Championship mode are sure to keep you hooked for a good ling time.
Our only small critique would be that the graphics feel a little dated, but then again this suits the old school style of the game.
Screen & Controls
The app comes in a fun football/soccer theme. The newest version is more user friendly, complete with better tables and windows, not to mention more appealing design elements. TIPP-KICK Championship controls are nice and simple.
Speed & Stability
TIPP-KICK Championship performed well throughout our test runs. No lagging, no crashing. Loading times have improved quite a bit since the last update and the game now loads pretty quickly.
TIPP-KICK Championship goes for €1.99 which strikes us as a very fair price for such a cool game.
