My Top 5 Android News Apps For Phones And Tablets

Eric McBride

I don’t know about you guys, but every morning/evening I have a 45 min- 1 hour ride to work on the train, which leaves me a lot of time to check out the news on my phone or tablet. There are literally thousands of great news apps out there, but I have 5 in particular that I find myself using the most. These 5 applications are all optimized for both phones and tablets, load news very quickly, are all free, and have lots of sharing options. 4 of the 5 apps even come from the same developer. Let’s check my top 5 favorite Android news apps!

News Republic

I have been using News Republic on my both my phone and tablet for a very long time. Mobiles Republic is the name of the company that develops the app, which comes preloaded with multiple world news sources. You can naturally customize it to add feeds that tailor to your interest, you can set up the homescreen to your liking, receive breaking news in your notification bar, save articles for offline reading, and easily share articles on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Email, and more. The articles load very fast, feature photos that you can zoom in on, and scale great on phones and tablets in landscape and portrait mode.

The app is free to download and can be downloaded from AndroidPIT via the following links:

Appy Geek

Appy Geek is from the same developers as News Republic, and has more or less the exact same features, sharing, and customization options. This particular app however, is centered specifically on tech, and is great for receiving a breaking news alert for when Apple gets another Android product banned :-D As with the News Republic app, the app loads articles quickly and is very reliable.

Appy Gamer

Once again, Mobiles Republic delivers yet another great free news app! This one focuses on games, and has pretty much the same user interface (colors are different) and features as News Republic and Appy Geek. This is a great app for keeping up with everything going on in the video game world, and is perfect for people who have multiple consoles. It has sections pre-loaded for PS3, Xbox360, Nintendo, PC, Top Stories, and videos, (along with the feeds you can personally add to it) making it a great way to keep up with all that awesome gaming news.

Sports Republic

So guess who just happens to make this app? You guessed it...Mobiles Republic...again. Sports Republic is the app I use for keeping track of sports news, and although the ESPN app almost made my top pick for this category, I chose this one as it doesn’t require any registration or login details in order to use (and is easier to setup). Again, the same interface (colors are different), great features, speed, and reliability from the previous Mobiles Republics apps are all there, giving you more than enough nicely implemented options to play with. If you’re a sports junkie, this app is definitely a great tool for keeping up to date with sports news (although it might not be the best app for up to the second sports scores).

Taptu

This choice was a bit of a toss up, as it’s very similar to Pulse, another news aggregator that I really like. In the end, I went with Taptu, as I like the tablet interface a bit more. Taptu allows you to pick from thousands of news feeds on virtually any topic, and has a side scrolling interface that works great on both phones and tablets. Taptu has been around for a while, and they have added some pretty cool features to keep this app one of the best news apps on Google Play. You can even add your Facebook and Twitter stream to the app, making it a great way to keep up on news, tech, sports, social, art, cooking (or whatever the hell you’re interested in) all from one app. For a quick overview on different types of news, Taptu is awesome.

So there you have it! When it comes to news on specific topics, Mobiles Republic is pretty damn hard to beat in my eyes, as their apps look great on phones and tablets, are fast, and are very customizable (that being said, if you don't like the UI that Mobiles Republic uses, you might want to look around a bit more). For a quick overview on everything, you can’t go wrong with an app like Taptu, and when using all 5 of these apps on both my phone and tablet, it’s pretty hard for any news whatsoever to slip past me.

Which apps do you guys use the most on your phones/tablets?

I've been using Pulse almost every day for about a year and I'm very satisfied. It's fast, I love the UI and I can save articles and view them on my PC (through the app's Web version). Pulse is a data hogger though... So when I'm on a plan I only use News Republic. It uses minimal data and is really fast.

You think so? Well, I never tried Taptu because from what I see in the screenshots it's not as good pulse.. I'll try it out though. Thanks.

Give it a shot! It's more or less the same app in many ways. Both are very good.
