When getting a new smartphone for Christmas, the first thing that many people do is turn it into an alternate TV. What makes it better than your average boob-tube? Well you can take your phone everywhere with you, all while watching your favorite shows from various TV apps! So without further ado, here are some excellent apps for watching TV on your Android device.

Netflix

Netflix, an Android app for watching TV shows and movies, sets itself apart from its competition by providing you with tons of TV shows for a monthly, relatively cheap fee and no extra charge per show/movie. There is no waiting time between episodes, you can stream all day all night, free of ads. With the choice of either browsing through different categories, new titles and fresh episodes, you’re also able to perform searches and rate what you’ve just watched. Netflix keeps its collection updated so that you aren’t stuck watching B movies no one has ever heard of. Best of all, this app will try to cater movies to you from your previously viewed (and liked) videos and you can try Netflix out for one month for free.

Hulu Plus

The Hulu Plus app is another Android TV app and this time it’s 100% free. You’ll also be getting new TV shows and movies as well as older classics, like Battlestar Galactica or Arrested Development. There are shows for adults as well as for children. Some of the functions include the possibility to watched a paused video from your TV or any other supported devices, as well as a video queueing and sharing. The only catch with the free version, as it is with most apps which cost nothing, is that it contains quite a few ads which many find annoying. To be able to mostly get rid of these, you’ll have to purchase the full version for $7.99 per month.

TV.com

For fans of news, sports and the current buzz in Hollywood, this next TV app will definitely rub you the right way. TV.com, a CBS Interactive, Inc. app, doesn’t have your typical shows and movies, but offers video clips and highlights from CBS, the CW, CNET, ET, Showtime, CBS News and CBS Sports. If you just need the essential information quickly, then this app will keep you updated on current news without bogging you down with any unnecessary fluff.

Crackle

Crackle made it to our list because it is chock full of new and regularly added movies and TV shows and is the best place to find Anime movies and episodes like Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X), Fate/Zero and Magi. The makers have also created their own Crackle channel with content they think is the most entertaining. Not only is the app free, so are the individual shows. You can browse through the various categories and create your own wishlist. The app will only work in the USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil and some other countries in South America. It’s recommended to use Crackle only if you have a stable internet connection, as buffering can otherwise be a problem. The app also contains ads, but as mentioned above, this is normal for free apps. Though it’s not a 100% perfect app, the developers update it on a regular basis to try and improve performance.

HBO Go

Though HBO Go is in Netflix’s shadow for performance and movie and tv show choices, the app is still being enjoyed by over 50 million users in the USA. HBO is known for creating Emmy-award winning TV shows, so to have this right in your pocket is a luxury. Here you’ll get all your favorite shows, movies, comedy specials, sports and documentaries from the reputed provider. They’ve even thrown in some behind-the-scene clips for that extra somethin' somethin' (a plus for fans of shows like Boardwalk Empire, True Blood and Game of Thrones). By paying for a one time subscription, you can view free shows on both your smartphone or tablet, create a watchlist and be able to catch up on a paused video from multiple devices. Fun fact: when a new TV season or movie premiers on the TV channel, you get it on the mobile app right away as well.
