9 reasons you should never leave your smartphone at home

You’ve done it at some point. You left home without your smartphone. It could be that you were just running to the grocery store or going to the gym. Maybe you needed one of those journeys where you detach from your cell phone. But you should never leave home without your smartphone. Here are some reasons why.

Reason 1: you could need some important information

You go to the movies and don’t take your cell phone. You probably figure, why take it, I cannot use it anyways. But say you got the movie times wrong and need to go to a different theater. Now you have to go home and figure out something different.

Your smartphone has important information from the internet that you might need. These could include opening times for stores you might think of going to. You might waste a trip because you didn’t know when the DMV closes (usually pretty early).

What if you get hungry and want to get something at a restaurant. You have no way of knowing whether the establishment is well-rated or what's popular there, your smartphone has this information available to you. See how famished and disoriented I am?

Reason 2: your notifications will pile up

If you go out without your cell phone for a day or two you will certainly have tons of notifications backed up. These could be tweets, calls, texts, emails, etc. They will all be there waiting for you when you get back and you will probably try to respond to at least most of them.

During the day or two you didn’t have your cell phone there was probably a time when you weren’t doing anything exciting. It doesn’t matter if you were waiting in line at the grocery store or sitting in a park, you had some free time. You could have just answered your notifications during this time, then they wouldn’t be backed up.

Unanswered notifications can make you anxious. You've probably said after being away from your smartphone, "now I’m going to have a hundred notifications." If you’re getting away from your phone to get some relaxation, you might find you worry about who’s contacting you and how many messages you’ll have to answer once you’re back with your phone.

Reason 3: your friends and family will start to worry

Have you ever called a friend or family member who usually picks up and suddenly they don't respond? It’s troubling; your mind starts coming up with reasons for their not answering. This is an uncomfortable feeling and you shouldn’t put your friends, family or significant other through this.

The smartphone age has made it where we can always get a hold of someone, night or day. You might not like this but it is a fact and everyone with a smartphone needs to accept this.

Let’s say you go on a weekend camping trip and you decide not to take your cell phone. You will forget to tell someone in your contacts what you’re doing and they will start to worry. Even if you tell people where you are and that you don’t have your cell phone, they will still worry.

Reason 4: you can't take goofy pictures

Look at this golden opportunity to snap a picture below. I was walking and my foot got stuck on some gum and my knee stung for about 15 seconds. But if my friend didn't have his smartphone he couldn't have taken this snapshot and posted it on all his social media channels.

Reason 5: your cell phone could get stolen

If you leave your phone unaccompanied, you run the risk of it being stolen. Sure, it could get stolen if you bring it with you but at least that way you have control. When it’s away from you it is outside of your purview.

Heaven forbid the phone actually does get stolen from your house while you’re away. This is devastating. If you don’t have insurance against theft you need to buy a new phone. But more importantly, your data gets stolen and so does the contact information from your friends, coworkers and family members.

It is more likely that someone you know will break into your phone while you leave it at home. This person may have seen you unlock the phone before and goes in to check what you’ve been up to. Have anything you want kept secret on your phone? Take it with you.

Reason 6: your contacts are not available

Do you know any of your contacts’ phone numbers, email addresses or home addresses? Could you reach them at all if you didn’t have your cell phone? Face it, your cell phone has all the contact information for everyone in your life. Without it, it’s very difficult to contact people.

So you go to the grocery store and you didn’t take your cell phone. Then you realize you needed to call your friend to ask about a dish for a dinner party. Maybe you took a trip without your phone and you need to call a loved one about a serious injury or illness that’s happened. You need to have your cell phone because without it you cannot contact them when you need to.

Reason 7: you forget your schedule

So you decide to do something mundane without your cell phone. You go to the laundry mat or get your haircut. But you had an important appointment you needed to keep and you set your scheduling app to remind you an hour prior. If you just had your phone you could have made the appointment.

You probably have a scheduler, note app and/or appointment app. You downloaded and use these apps for a reason, because you always have your cell phone and they remind you to not miss important events.

Even if you don’t have these apps you at least can receive calls about an event. What if it’s your friend’s birthday party and you totally forgot? Your other friend could call or text to remind you so you can avoid an embarrassing mishap.

Reason 8: you will start to get anxious

Nomophobia is the fear of being out of contact with a mobile phone. Yes, it’s a real condition. It has been proposed as a ‘specific phobia’ that could be added to the list of official mental disorders from the American Psychiatric Association. It comes from the phrase no-mobile-phone phobia.

Nomophobia hits you when you run out of batteries, run out of data and especially, when you don’t have your phone. Though you might not have nomophobia, you almost certainly have had anxiety from not having your phone. Why would you put yourself through any sort of anxiety? Just take your cell phone with you.

Reason 9: you could get lost

If you don’t take your smartphone to a softball game because you don’t want to leave it on the bench or take it into the field, you might need it afterwards to get home or to go an after game party at a bar or a teammate’s house. Maybe you’re confident and decide to give it a whirl and navigate on your own. If you get lost you will have the annoying task of asking someone for directions and then trying to follow those directions.

It doesn’t happen a lot in the times of GPS and cell phones but getting lost can be a problem if technology is not there as a crutch. We forget how many ways cell phones have made it easier for us to get around, whether that be in a car or with public transportation.

  • OMG Cory, this better be jokes!!! If it's not, and those are your strongest reasons then I'm worried you're one severely affected nomophobe!

I got all the way to the end of this list hoping that you'd at least have ONE decent reason... but that was a fail.

Chances are that wherever you go you're not going to be the only one who has a mobile.

If someone's having a heart attack (and how many times have you personally ever had to use your phone to call in one of those... and would you, Mr RatherLookAtMyMobileThanSayHiToAnAquaintenceInTheStreet really get involved in a real emergency to that level?)
...you can ask a passerby to call for help, and once they and the first aider who just stopped to help have it in hand you can play the "I'm not qualified to help here" card and ESCAPE!
You don't have to be the world's volunteer on-the-spot comms guy.

There is one seriously good reason to never leave your phone at home... Ingress!!!
You're going to be passing something that needs to be hacked, smashed or captured, and you're the best person for the job.
Mustn't let the shapers destroy humanity while you're not paying attention!
Last week I was standing on the side of the footpath doing my duty and a rude man tried to push between me and the wall, he was zig-zagging a bit so I asked if he was a little drunk. He snapped at me that "people in this country keep left, as I'm sure you know!" (wrong around here!) and then said "You should get down and worship that thing!" (my mobile, which I was intent on) - little does he know how often I do that!

PS: It's not called a laundry mat, it's a laundromat.

On serious note, leaving phone at home intentionally is not a good idea because in today's world anything could happen to anyone. If somebody is in urgent need to contact you due to any circumstance, unfortunately you met an accident, if you need to call a police, if you miss reminder of super urgent meeting etc. There are 'n' number of reasons that why should we carry this device with our self. If you don't face any above mentioned scenario than it's well and good so you can keep your phone aside & enjoy your time. Hope for the best for all.

    • You said 'n' number of reasons. Unfortunately the cellphone is replacing the pay phone and it all comes down to the phone being an electronic address book.

  • I'm not sure whether or not this is a satiric view on mobility.. But I sure hope it is, because most reasons given are just a little sad.. I myself never leave home without, however, it's good not to feel too handicapped if that should happen - in case of most of the reasons given here that is. I understand emergencies, contact and navigation, but reasons like piled up notifications.. Come on man!

    • Thanks for your comment Multiverse. I agree that emergencies, contacts and navigation are much more important than piled up notifications. I do think, though, that if you're looking to get away from your smartphone for a while and relax that piled up notifications will take away from that relaxation. This could be during your time away from your phone or after. I always try to answer all of my notifications but some folks are different. I usually answer notifications when I'm waiting in line or waiting for my order to be finished at a take-out place. I would have had to answer them sometime anyways.

      • I agree with multiverse, but rarely do I leave the house without my phone. But if you leave your phone at home intentionally to decompress, well then piled up notifications come with the territory. That defeats the purpose if you feel the need to address them all. But I to take the opportunity to do things on my phone when there's down time when waiting in line or for an order.

  • I leave my phone at home when I go to the gym. No need to bring my phone when I work out

What did humanity do before cell phones? We must have been knuckle daggers.
