Update News: Xperia To Play With CyanogenMod

Authored by: Aaron Tilton — Sep 28, 2011

Today's hot Xperia news comes straight from CyanogenMod's lead developer himself. Steve Kondik has confirmed that their next major release will be a feature support for all current Xperia devices bringing custom Rom fun to the Sony Ericsson line. This is especially good news for users of older Xperia handsets as Sony has stopped releasing updates for out of date models. This latest project is a collaboration between CyanogenMod and the FreeXperia team and might just be a reason to finally get those Sony handsets rooted.

Supported devices will include:

  • Xperia Arc
  • Xperia Neo
  • Xperia Mini
  • Xperia Mini Pro
  • Xperia Play
  • Xperia Ray
  • Xperia X10
  • Xperia X8
  • Xperia X10 Mini
  • Xperia X10 Mini Pro

While the CyanogenMod is certainly a tempting option for many Xperia users, those too timed to try to unlock their bootloader won't have to wait long for their next Android upgrade. A Android 2.3.4 update is set to go live sometime in October bringing 720p HD recording to the Xperia Play (among other perks)

And installing it teaches you alot more about how your phone works. Its almost worth it just to learn more about the system!

It offers you more options to customise what you are doing and have more root access/ controll over what yours system is doing at a given moment.

I haven't really looked much at the Rom scene. Other then the launcher what the difference between a normal android distribution and the CyMod?
