Disastrous Android Lollipop problems and their solutions

Though Android 7.0 Nougat is now upon us, Android Lollipop is still popular worldwide – and in some cases it's causing problems. If you want to know how to fix Android Lollipop issue, here are the solutions to the most common bugs we've heard about. We'll add to this list as more issues crop up.

Jump to section:

Check these things first

Some of the most common problems after a software update are easy to fix. Before taking drastic measures, check the following:

  • Check that all your apps are up-to-date by going to the Play Store > My Games and Applications.
  • If an app continues to suffer from problems, go to Settings > Applications and select the app in question. Then clear the cache
  • If the problem persists, restart your phone.
  • You can also try to clear the cache or app data of other apps that are causing issues.
  • If all previous solutions have failed, you can try restoring to the factory settings. This will delete your data, photos, videos and all other personal files saved on your smartphone. Check the solutions that are recommended in this article before proceeding to this step.

Android Lollipop: performance problems

For most people, updating to Android Lollipop has made their hardware happier, their teeth whiter and their days just dandy. But some users have encountered a range of issues, including freezes, crashes, stutter and lag. In-place upgrades can be the cause of that.

Installing updates on top of updates on top of updates can eventually cause problems, so a factory reset might be on the cards, but first look at your apps to check they’ve been updated to Lollipop. As with any performance issues, try switching off anything you don’t need to see if you can identify a specific cause.

Android Lollipop: apps restarting in the background

There is a bug that restarts apps in the background in the first version of Android 5.0, but not with the 5.1 update. Even apps with persistent notifications in the status bar are affected by this scourge. The only way to solve this problem is to restart the phone, which is a temporary solution, or update your phone to a newer Android version, for a permanent solution.

Android Lollipop: missing "system.img" error message

This is a seriously dismaying issue, but it's fixable, I assure you. Before you can use Lollipop on your device, you get this error message, "Missing system.img". When it was still on this version of Android, the Nexus 5 had also experienced this major problem, which can occur during the flash of an installation image with version of 5.0.
To solve the issue, you simply need to flash the installation files one by one manually, instead of using the automatic command "flash-all.bat".

Android Lollipop: WiFi connectivity

It seems that we can't have an Android update without something going wrong with either WiFi, Bluetooth or both. Try the usual range of solutions: toggle airplane mode on and off, forget and reconnect to the network, reboot your phone, restart your router or switch between the WiFi frequency bands.

If this fails, you may have to wait for a patch from Google for the permanent solution.

Android Lollipop: overheating

Assuming you haven’t left your device in direct sunlight or near a wicked child with a magnifying glass, overheating is often a side-effect of really hammering the phone with apps such as 3D games.

Your case might be contributing to the problem too – phones are designed to be case-free, and heavy cases can interfere with heat dissipation. It’s also worth trying Safe Mode to see if the culprit is an app that’s misbehaving.

Android Lollipop: battery drain bug

Every new installation of Android firmware results in some battery drain for some users. This is almost always because the update was applied over the top of existing firmware rather than installed 'clean'. There are a few things that could go wrong when everything is set up one way on your phone, and then the world shifts beneath its feet.

So now may be the time to bite the bullet, do a full backup and do a factory reset. You can do this via the Settings > Backup & Reset section or manually with the hardware buttons. Just search AndroidPIT for your particular device and 'factory reset' to find a step-by-step guide on how to do this.

Android Lollipop: video playback bug

Nexus 7 (2013) owners have reported some bugs with video playback following the update to Lollipop. The issue doesn't seem to be restricted to any particular app, but YouTube is, of course, at the center of the furor. Any app that uses the default Android video player suffers though.

If YouTube is the issue for you, hit Settings > Apps and find the entry for YouTube. Clear the cache and try again or do a reboot for a temporary fix. You can always try uninstalling and reinstalling the app if problems persist. Some users are reporting that this has solved the problem, while others continue to suffer.

If you have a better fix let us know in the comments below. Worst case scenario: back up all your data, do a factory reset and clear the cache partition.

Android Lollipop: flashlight bug

If you leave the flashlight on for a while, for example when you're struggling to find your keys in the dark, and it automatically times out, then the flashlight will be busted until you do a reboot. This is pretty weird but it occurred in the developer previews too.

It's odd that Google didn't bother to iron this one out, as it's a pretty well-known issue on the Nexus 5 already.

Android Lollipop: no silent mode, status bar ticker or power button menu

Sadly, these are 'improvements' rather than problems. You can't simply volume down to silent mode (only to vibrate), there's no option other than Power Off when you long press the Power button, and the status bar ticker – that little scrolling preview of notifications – has been killed with fire in the latest version of Android.

We expect the masses to rise up shortly and some changes to be made, or at least some workarounds figured out if you're willing to tweak your phone a little. In any case, we've already explained how to enable silent mode on Android 5.0.

Android Lollipop: OTA broken on modified devices

This probably shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, but Google doesn't necessarily want your rooting or otherwise modifying your device or firmware. So if you've modded your Android a bit, you may not be able to install the OTA update.

Fortunately the solution is pretty straightforward: simply flash a stock image again and OTA will be hunky dory once again. Check our article on broken OTA updates for Android 5.0 Lollipop for more info.

Android Lollipop: fast charging isn't charging fast

This could be explained away by raised expectations: while Android supports Qualcomm's QuickCharge 2.0, not every phone does – and those that do don't always ship with a QuickCharge charger. There are also known incompatibilities with some third-party fast chargers, so if you’re encountering issues with one it’s worth trying another charger (if you can) to see if the problem goes away.

Android Lollipop: recent apps switcher issue

The recent apps card stack was a new addition to multi-tasking in Lollipop. But not everyone is a fan. Some users are claiming that, the more apps they have stacked, the slower their performance becomes, while others are noticing that even when a card has been removed from the stack, it mysteriously returns.

Even after a reboot your recent apps list will persist, so the only way to fix this one is to simply keep on swiping. Forever.

Android Lollipop: camera bug

Users have reported that their camera stops working after the Lollipop update – in some cases, this means that the icon to select the front-facing camera is no longer even there. To solve this, try deleting your Camera app's data.

This won't delete any of your photos, just your existing camera settings. Go to Settings > Apps > All > Camera and tap Clear data. If this doesn't work, try disabling it and then enabling it in the same menu.

Android Lollipop: GPS problems

GPS issues are quite rare on Lollipop, but some people have been experiencing them and a factory reset has been offered as one possible solution. If you find that your GPS signal is dropping frequently and don't wish to do a factory reset, try altering the location mode in your settings.

Set it to 'high accuracy', or if it already is, change it and then change it back.

Android Lollipop: Chrome tabs problem

Chrome Browser on Lollipop is set by default to store new tabs in the recent apps list, but for many this represents one of the biggest Lollipop fails of all.

Fortunately, all you need to do to change this is head to your Chrome settings and disable Merge tabs and apps to return to the more familiar 'number in a box in the URL bar' that brings up your tab list, as it always has.

Android Lollipop: Bluetooth problems

Android 5.1 has brought some Bluetooth issues with it, especially with Nexus devices. To fix it, it may appear too simple to be true, but it is recommended to turn the Bluetooth off and back on again. You can also clear the cache by going to Settings > Applications > All > Bluetooth Sharing > Clear cache.

Android Lollipop: incompatible applications

The arrival of newer versions of Android has made many applications no longer optimized for Lollipop. Worse, some are no longer compatible at all. Unfortunately, there are no miracle solutions, except to change smartphones, or find a new version of the app on APK mirror.

Since the Lollipop update, the EQ functions on music/mp3 players no longer work. None of the ones installed prior (including stock) nor new ones installed after. I can't find an mp3 app that says 'Android Lollipop supported'.

To solve the Wi-Fi problem, it worked for me:

Inside the router configuration (e.g., accessing the IP 192.168.0.1), change the "Group key update" value from 0 to 30 seconds, under the "Wireless > Security" configuration, right below the WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK item.

    Router: TP-LINK TL-WR740N / TL-WR740ND.

For the last few days, every time I take my phone off charge, it makes an audible announcement saying how much battery life I have left. This is really annoying as I often take my phone off charge when I wake up and my wife is still sleeping. I can't find a setting to switch this off. I have a Moto G running Android 5.1. Any ideas?

Just got my Matricom GBox-Q back from a factory update to Android 5.1.1. (It was promised OTA, but be careful of what you are promised). Nevertheless, life is good, EXCEPT all contact lists have vanished from Gmail, and if I type in a complete email address in order to send, it doesn't remember it the next time. I have a pretty good education, but I can't even figure out how to access Gmail contacts in order to build a new list, now that I have my new, improved operating system. I havea feeling I am not alone. Am I? Any advice? George P.S. I downloaded one of the contact-organizing apps, and my lists are still out there, somewhere.

just updated my Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 tablet to 5.1.1: the default camera app is nothing what it was, which was great before.. now everything is zoomed in too close.. i'd have to get far away to take a good picture.. and image stabilization is kind of sucky now. I can't get WiFi direct to connect to my other Galaxy devices any more.. which is not at all intuitive.. and I'm a former Samsung Rep.. that's not good..

Upgraded firmware on Matricom G-BoxQ to V.1.3, and it in turn, upgraded to Lollipop 5.1. Now my Launcher icons fail to open their associated apps. There was a warning/disclaimer prior to running the update that stated some apps may not work after the upgrade. I can only open them from inside of the <All Apps> folder. I have tried deleting cache and clearing data on the apps system settings to no avail. All the icons are unresponsive. Anyone uncovered a fix for the android/Matricom launcher after upgrading? Thanks, -dkh-

I don't see any fixes for volume issues. My Tab 4 (10.1) constantly lowers the volume when I'm connect to my Bluetooth earpiece. It doesn't matter if I'm streaming, watching videos, movies, etc. It's more than annoying to watch something on Netflix and have to readjust the volume every few minutes. Fix this damn thing.

that is normal. it is a hearing function so that you don't go deaf by blowing out your ears from high volume. you just need to buy some external speakers with its own volume control, or earphones with its own volume control

    Hi,
I have a new Skytex Skypad SP736 (7" quad core)
tablet, with Android 5.0 Lollipop pre-installed from Skytex.
The internal storage (16GB) is partitioned as "Internal Storage", and "USB Storage".
"Internal storage" is set to 2.36 GB, "USB storage" is set to 9.02 GB. Available space left in "Internal Storage" is +/- 400 MB. This ts the storage area where apps are loaded and is too small to download many apps. I have moved some apps (those movable) to the "USB storage", cleared cache, and cleared data, to preserve some space (+/- 400MB) to download apps.
Is this a normal situation?; my phone has 16GB of internal storage (android 4.4.2) and is not partitioned.
How do I fix this, for example force apps to load to the "USB storage" partition.

    Thank you for your consideration,

I will be the first to admit I'm not tech-savvy in any dimension but since I got nagged into updating my Moto G 5.1 ( I caved, alright!) of the most basic functions of my phone isn't working anymore. You know, the part when someone calls you and you answer the call to have a conversation. If I swipe or tap to answer an incoming call, it gets disconnected about 80% of the time. I've tried holding the swipe, holding the tap, doing a handstand, standing on one leg, etc., etc. and I still lose calls. Also, since the upgrade I've had to switch off my data storage warning otherwise any pictures I try to text will not send because MMIS/mobile data is disabled? This is news to me. I don't use any more data than I normally do, and I have not made any changes to that other when I first got the phone. These are new error messages popping up.The changes I've seen in font size, light settings, icons and all the other stuff fall into the so-what category for me; my previous icons made sense and worked. So all in all, I'm not impressed and to be told that my only option is a factory reset doesn't work for me. It's also adding salt to the wound when you can't uninstall the update; you're stuck with it.

for the bad software issue.. is this in your internet browser? sounds like you clicked on a link that triggers this malicious intent.. it is just someone playing a trick on you. don't believe it, your Android device is secure. to get out of this, just completely close your internet browser down so that the windows are no longer open. if you go to your task manager, you can swipe it to close it, after that when you bring up your internet browser again, it should be working fine again. others target gullible people to thinking they have to pay or caught a virus when they did not

I got Lollipop and in an instant my GPS was pants. KitKat 4.4.4 was brilliant. My phone goes back for the third time to have KitKat put back on. They said it could not be done but they are doing for me. The GPS thinks it can see more satellites than the US DOD know are active. It gets '3D Fix' then immediately resets the GPS so now has 'No Fix' and starts all over again. It does this ad infinitum.

Unfortunately I updated my Samsung Core Prime with android 5.0.2 and the problem is that it drains the battery. I found a solution with GserviceFix. It worked, however I realized that it's not the same. When I go to sleep around 12 and I leave the battery full charged (100%), but when I wake up, at 6am, it's around 83%. I want Andorid 4.0.4 again!!!!! For those who haven't installed Android 5.0.2 yet, don't do it!!!!

Since upgrade to Android 5.0.2 on my Samsung Core Prime I've lost received email notification. In settings email notification is ticked but when email comes in no bell sounds, no pop up appears and phone does not vibrate although all have been ticked to do so in settings. The only thing that does show is the number of emails received on the home screen in the red dot but I have no idea when they arrived until I open them. Took phone back to shop and was told they had no idea why this is happening. Offered to send phone away to be investigated at a charge and it would take at least three weeks so I forgot about that. Then I was told that an Android upgrade might come out to fix the problem but no guarantee that will happen. Before 5.0.2 upgrade everything worked perfectly. All other notifications do work, text and Wassap it's only the incoming email notification that has stopped working. Anybody got any ideas?

    My gripes with Lollipop 5.1:

-Groups for my contacts are not grouped in my stock Contacts and Phone apps, or anything stock. Yet my desktop Contacts actually 'groups' them (which I synced with). But on my new Moto E 2nd Gen? Groups are assigned and shown in my contacts' profiles, but Lollipop breaks the cohesion. That after finally forgoing my SD-saved Contacts, sprucing up my online backup after years of neglect, and then Syncing Contacts... Looked like this was going to be sweet. In some ways, it was. Oh, but biting down, I discovered the Lollipop is actually Android Jawbreaker. Now Groups has a chipped tooth.

-The Google Now search bar is stuck on stock . It's also solid white, rather than transparent. The Apps Drawer is also white. So let the battery drain and eye strain begin! Are you not entertained, Google?! Oh, and call me vain, but 1 thing I like about Android is tweaking the UI around my wallpaper. Looks like the vanilla experience ain't so satisfying. And I'm tired of crowding my phones with 3rd-party apps, and giving in to so many permissions, especially for what I thought were the fundamentals. The wrapper kinda lied; I can taste the aspartame. Guess Androids become more diet over the years. But I wanted real sugar! Yes, the OS has improved since its inception, but it's also worsened.

-I keep getting an error that Hangouts has stopped. Of course: I'm the one who disabled it. So...why is it causing indigestion when the other apps I disabled were neutralized? Yeah, I know there's a risk of disabled apps causing heartburn, but Hangouts is the only unruly one. And it stayed down on 4.0.1. I think my new Lolly is too sour.

As much as those issues irk me, I know I'm still lucky compared to the woes others are experiencing. I just hope Google can resolve most, if not all, of our issues.

Halloween is creeping fast. Soon will be a time for candy. Will Google eventually give us a trick. Or a treat? I guess it all depends upon how many licks it takes to get to the center.

Since my upgrade to Lollipop two days ago on my Samsung Galaxy 5 phone, I have virtually lost ALL my previously installed apps, (180), as the new OS is unable to understand the backed up apps, and therefore fails to re install apps with the message "Unexpected parsing error". This happens to ALL my apps regardless where they are stored, also the apps backed up by Lollipop upon upgrading. What is worse is there is no way back as resetting to factory state, installs Lollipop one again instead of the original KITKAT. AND,still no way to WRITE to the extSdCard!!

GOOGLE seems all out of control, what is happening?

  • 2
Christiansen Sep 11, 2015 Link to comment

MY biggest problem so far is that the backed up apps can not be re installed from ANYWHERE except a fresh download from Google Play. The old problem of not being able to write to the removable card is also a pain in the ass.
However. I have managed to solve the problems as follows:

    1. You can transfer files to the removable card using Google´s OWN file manager.
You can also transfer files via your PC and a USB cable.

    2. I was lucky to find BACKUP+ doing several ´googles´ on the Internet. This app does a backup to BACKUP+ directory in your main storage area, from where it later can be retrieved and re installed successfully. Although I have not tried it yet,I believe you can also select to backup direct to your DropBox cloud drive. It also has many other features.

    3. Another BIG fault is that if you wish to reset to factory default and the Android version that came with it, you will end up with Android Lollipop v 5.0.2 being re installed again... AHHGGGG!!!!

    Well,that´s all so far!!

I've tried saving my number as a separate contact with an image, that doesn't work, I've tried factory resetting and re-doing all my contacts and that hasn't worked, and I've tried changing the picture on my contact repeatedly and still no fix, and this issue is really beginning to bug me. Mine restarts itself too, ever since I did the Lollipop 5.0.2 update, I've had really bad battery drainage problem's, for example, last night I was on YouTube, my battery was on 81%, and out of nowhere, the battery drained straight down to 0%, and my Sony Xperia Z1 Compact restarted itself, and my battery was literally 1%, and when I'm on my Android, my battery problem's get worse, for example, a few weeks back, I was on YouTube, my battery was around 44%, and I watched the battery drain with my own two eyes, it drained from 44% to 27% in around 15 second's, which is ridiculous, and then when my Android reached 27%, my phone turned itself off, if this is Google's fault, they need to do something about it!

You can make silence mode by pressing the volume button and choose "none". Then you can select if you want it silence for 1 hour, 2 hour or more. If you want it back you can just press volume button again and choose "all".

It's not as easy as just pressing volume down until it hits silence, like in kitkat.

But unfortunately, password field was not available on my phone screen after getting locked remotely by android device manager (Even in this case, it was available in previous versions of android). Now my phone is locked and i can not access my data at all. The only option customer care representatives suggesting are to wipe the phone data completely. Is there any other way to unlock my phone at this stage without losing my data ?

Not sure if it helps, but I may be onto something as far as the WiFi issues. The last 3 phones I have had all wouldn't stay connected to my home WiFi. I would authentication errors, no internet connection errors, etc. It started with my Note 3, then my LG G2, and now with my Note Edge all running various versions of Kit Kat and now with Lollipop. The issue may seem to be a conflict with WiFi Direct and/or WiFi Direct Share. I tried uninstalling them or turning them off, but for some reason you can't. So I just went ahead and force stopped them in the Application Manager. Haven't had a problem since. You may need to go in manually and force stop it from time to time after you leave and come home and reconnect to your home WiFi, but all seems to be good so far. I may need to root my device just so I can uninstall them!

On my AT&T Note4, observing one more problem. The SpO2 sensor light is continuously glowing when phone is lying on the back, even though the phone is in standby or locked mode.

This is obviously draining the battery. So far the only workaround is keep the phone face down instead of on the back.

Any solution to fix this permanently, other than trying with master reset.

The phone reboots over and over again..In any window/app. The battery is draining and keeps disconnecting from wifI.I've tried everything Inc full factory reset but still rebooting...Sometimes 3/4 times in a minute whilst I'm sending a message or looking at Web.

I hate the orange messages but get that that's just tough! There doesn't seem to be any comment from Samsung. EE are saying it's their issue but it's nit helping as I'm paying for a phone that's pretty unusable at the moment.

Dude nice post but you've got one tottaly wrong. Silent mode is now Priority mode. Its appears right under the volume sliding bar. You can set priority mode indefinitely or for a specific amount of time. You can also select NONE for no interruptions at all, not even alarms. Silent mode reengineered of you'd like.

Just finished my first year with Android... and I'm appalled with its overall UI klunkiness and "Ghetto Rolex" feel. I did my best to open my mind to its interface and what some deem its "customization" and ease of use. After a year, I've gotten used to the lags, the jumping screens, the automatically switching icons, the fact that you can't set a different tone for your different notifications without some sort of funky beta app, and having to re-start it several times a day because of app malfunctions.

I've yet to see any real "customization" to the base UI, other than add-ons that bulk up garbage on top of the already shaky platform. Add to that the fact that everything is in a different place on every different maker's version of Android, which is migraine-inducing when you're trying to work with someone else's phone. Then there's the "junk drawers" - the folders full of downloads and apps and crapware (much of which you can't erase without damaging the system). I feel kind of suckered into the entire Android hype by the people who swear its a superior product to Apple.

Needless to say, I will be returning to iPhone soon. My "Year of Living Dangerously" just proved to me the incredible elegance, reliability and ease-of-use of Apple's iOS. Just like Windows is a clunky, hacker version of Mac's OS, Android is a clunky, hacker version of iOS.

I like to stick with the classic original... not the fiberglass kit version.

I agree, the Android UI is clunky, flaky and crap, Apple isn't much better but at least it's smoother. But the.big difference between the two is Android gives file system access and Apple doest.

I don't have that problem. I hit my volume down and it's completely silent and I have options when I hit volume down once to click on the gear settings icon, which then I can adjust with one swipe all my other sounds and notifications. I personally hate all sounds, so Ive gone into every application and manually turned off sounds, went into phone settings turned off sounds, and anywhere else the options exist. I just dislike that my alarms don't push through my silent modes like with kitkat.

Typically, the reason for this problem with rapid batter drain is that you installed the Lollipop OTA without first doing a factory reset on your phone. So backup your phone, do a factory reset, clear the dalvik cache and do the upgrade again.

Did you backup your device and do a factory reset BEFORE upgrading to Lollipop? This may be the reason for some of the problems. As a last resort, backup your device and do a factory reset. Then flash the upgrade.

Another reason is that some of the developers did not update their apps for lollipop so the apps may crash or behave badly...with those apps, you may have no choice but to wait for the developer to fix their problems.

I can see the notification bar as well, but am not presented with the number pad that would allow me to enter my unlock code. Sometimes I can swipe down the notification bar and click on a notification. After clicking on the notification, it will show my number pad so that I can enter my unlock code. One thing I find frustrating in Lollipop is the new volume settings so I created a small widget that stays in the notification bar that lets you adjust the level of the volume quickly. You also have the option to turn it on or off from the lockscreen.

Lolipop blows chunks. Holo interface of Kitkat and before was so nice. Material Design interface of Lolipop is so god aweful. Just goes to show you cant have something beautiful in this world that is intuitive and just works for very long, before so asshole hot shot college kids come along and think they know better than the old masters, fuck things up, and foist and tam it down everybody elses throat as the latest greatest shit.

Worse, every app now has to be bloated supporting both interfaces across both OS’s. Not every android device can upgrade or will ever be able to. Worse, there is no switch inside Lolipop in settings to revert back to Holo… even thoigh all the apps have to support it and you want it god damn back so bad.

Google must of hired the Windows 8 design team after they were fired by Microsoft for the Windows 8 split personality delete the START button fiasco. What do they do but proceed to fuck up android as well with a split personality.

You will think Lolipop is the cats meow if all you do on it is play Candy Crush Saga and Angry Birds. Ooo pretty new eye candy.

On the other, if you use it for any length of time as a power user you will find Google screwed up everything, everywhere, and for no good reason.

Imagine suddenly Ford rolls out a recall to all their cars, that are brought into the shop for a free upgrade. When you get your car back like millions of other people, suddenly your brake pedal is where your gas pedal was, your clutch is now where your brake was, and your gas pedal is now where your windshield wiper control speed was. Your horn starts your car, and your cigarette lighter now activates your turn signals...

Oh did I mention they gave you a whole new pin stripping package with racing strips on the outside of your car? Looks awesome. If you're into Disney cartoon cars.

If your car is a garage queen youll see the fresh new pin stripping that makes your car seem newer and faster and be happy because it was free and man you car looks new again with worthless eye candy interface fluff!

But if like the millions of others who actually drive your car dailtly, you are pissed off as hell with the idiotic, pointless, confusing, and purposeless changes...

I have a nexus 4, here's my issues with lollipop in no particular order.
    1) I miss the old folders from the photo gallery. Having everything mushed in to just one day ( photos I took, photo's downloaded, screen shots, photos taken in apps like twitter) hate it. Also, no. I don't want to autobackup. Quit asking.
    2) why must my phone open to contacts instead of the HOME screen? How do I change the picture of contacts and remove them from the front even if I just called them?
    3) no silent mode? Come on. I think it's nice to have more options to select who can get priority but not at the cost of never having silence.
    4) not a fan of the prevalence of primary colors everywhere. Why so much? I miss black, read here it may help battery life too.
    5) I want the lines on my keyboard back. I don't need a keyboard taking up more room to have smaller visible letters either. A bigger tear drop shaped cursor thing would be nice, too, for editing purposes.
    6) is it that hard to give us imojees? We have to keep up with the iKids sometimes...
    7) thanks for listing a fix here for the internet tabs!
    8) there should be at least an indication of a phone call missed or text received-without displaying the text please- while the screen is locked. This seems so rudimentary. That's why it was called "notifications"..?
In general, I'd appreciate if system updates for security were separate from design changes. I might want my phone to be safe but not have time or patience to invest in learning to use my phone functionally at the same time. I also think if you aren't going to label a button but use an icon instead hovering over said icon should make it's purpose be stated.
    I want back kit Kat.

I got the update a month ago and just now found this forum. I like some parts of the upgrade, but others are driving me crazy.

    1. When I get an incoming text or Messenger post, if the phone is idle, the most I get is a very faint pop sound. No sound notification, even though they are enabled. I can only get notification with sound if the phone is unlocked.

    2. When I receive an incoming phone call, I have to swipe twice to answer. Half the time I lose the call and have to call the person back.

If I'm using an app and get a call, the incoming call screen pops up, and I swipe. then another small window pops up asking if I'd like to accept the call or reject it. Pretty much no matter what I do, I lose the caller.

So no one else has had these issues?

the battery improved for me BIG TIME after the update.

While Material Design is beautiful, the bugs on my Nexus 5 are annoying. Adaptive Brightness is not adaptive. The lock screen is a bother with the extra step before unlocking. The battery drain is much worse than KitKat 4.4.4. My phone crashes often while I'm surfing the internet. Video playback on websites never works, and I've tried emptying the cache. And,yes, I agree that the round Contact images are not at all an improvement. I'm waiting for the update which will hopefully correct all these bugs and more.

Google released a new experimental player with the latest version of Lollipop which was causing me issues with blinkbox, a pay per view streaming service in the UK very similar to Vudu in the US.

The only advice they could give me was to disable the experimental player in Developer Settings and reboot the device.

This actually worked for me and all my streaming playback issues have gone away.

I've got a Nexus 4 which, under KitKat, had email setup with a connection to an exchange account. This account synced eMail, Calendar and Contacts (previously People).

After the OTA upgrade to Lollipop, almost everything seemed to migrate correctly, however SOME, but not ALL of the contacts (stored in the Exchange account) are no longer visible in the new Contacts app.

It seems that contacts which happened to have been created from the KitKat People app are no longer visible, although these contacts are and have always been visible on a desktop system using outlook.

My wife noticed this on her Nexus 4. I have a Nexus 5 which does NOT have the same problem...

    • 2
Mark Pizzolato Dec 1, 2014 Link to comment

I've discovered more detail here with this problem.

Using Outlook on a desktop system I've discovered what is different about the Exchange Contacts which don't appear under Lollipop's Contacts on the Nexus 4 (but do on the Nexus 5). These contact have a blank 'File as:' field in the contact definition. If I use Outlook to change the "File as:" Field they then are visible on the Nexus 4 device.

It is hard to imagine why the Nexus 4 treats these differently than the Nexus 5, but at least I now have a work around. By the way, newly created contacts on the Nexus 4 are now stored with a non-blank "File as:" field, so the only entries which exhibit this problem are the Contacts created by the KitKat People app.

I HATE this update to the point I'm about to throw my phone out the window and go back to the iPhone . I have a nexus 4 on koodo and never had a problem before..other then my phone is insanely hot with games..I mean 40° hot. This update.. I charge my phone 4 times a day now which makes it hotter and I constantly get crashed programs, the phone crashes without warning, it deleted all my saved passwords for WiFi and I get dropped service and WiFi constantly!! No its no koodo. I've been with them for years no problem until this update. Plus its made so many dramatic changes that it felt like I got a new phone without the new phone. I had to relearn everything again it was very frustrating. Benefits? Um, none. I have nothing good to say about it. I've had the update over a week now.
I got to mention I really miss my tabs on google...I usually have 60-90+ at a time but now they are mixed with recent used apps..booooooo!

You should do just that - really. Just remember you can't play with emulators or get Amazon' s free app of the day, also prepare to be laughed at for not having the latest iPhone, and when you do get IOS 8 and everything is different and needs to be relearnt, prepare to have lots of your old apps break. Depends which set of features and problems you want, but remember the Nexus 4 was probably half as expensive and most OS updates on any platform have teething problems.

I have only 3 editing tools in photos app - the same with Google +. Always says downloading resources. Just how do I get the rest of the tools? Google + and everything are on latest version so updating isn't a fix. Also one big reason to update is you can do screen recording without having to link to a PC or root. I found unlimited screen recorder free on the play store. Only works on lollipop so don't try finding it if your on KitKat.

Well, I've seen WiFiI issues on both N10 and N7'13. I've also seen YouTube refusing to play videos until you reboot. [FIX THIS Google!]

I've also seen several Rovio Angry Birds games bork (Transformers fail to load and can't use telepods with Go!) or Star Wars). [FIX THIS Rovio!]

Battery life is surprisingly good for me. N10 is a little better than before (maybe 20%), N7'13 is significantly better (maybe 50%) than before.

UI on N10 is as snappy as it always was, UI on N7'13 is much snappier!

I haven't had an issue with the Wifi after upgrading my Nexus 5 to lollipop. I have had some major problems with the Phone App though. I can make outgoing calls no problem, but if someone calls me they either get the message that I'm on another line, or unavailable. From my side a message will sometimes come up telling me that the phone app has stopped.

Oddly a friend was able to get through when calling me. We both are on the Three network though, which makes me wonder if it's related to t network provider.

On receiving calls or texts I sometimes find the screen starts flickering. So far this has only happened when my phone is paired with my LG G Smart Watch, but I never had that issue before the upgrade.

    Any advice appreciated.

I've been using Android Lollipop for a week, I can summarize my experience with: I miss KitKat!
The new interface is hideous, the first thing that comes to my mind is that this new update is a bad copy between iOS and the ugly TouchWiz interface, so damn colorful and white and ugly animations (either they're not good implemented or they got bugs for correct). Doesn't Google think of all of his Android users with amoled displays? Not really.
The battery drains so FAST! My Nexus 5 went from 98% to 50% in 4h during the night without using my device (That's not the way KitKat behaved with my battery; despite the fact that the battery of my N5 has never lasted so long after all).
I hate the new recent apps, sorry "overview", is ugly as... Now we have to take more time in just swiping away the apps 'cuz this new implementation only shows us two or almost three recent apps and the rest are behind, not useful.
What about the tabs of Chrome? No Google, I don't wanna have more than 50 tabs as recent apps in the "overview"!
And the battery saver mode is a joke, my phone runs slowly in that mode, and those orange bars? Couldn't have been easier with a simple icon in the notification bar? No, let's give our users this ugly orange bars to let them know that their cellphones are in battery saver mode.
The dialer and Google new apps are so colored and horrible, not simply, elegant and minimalist, Google!
Well, I'm downgrading to KitKat after all. Peace! :)

I agree with most of what you were trying to say :)
All the endless talk of how intuitive it is, How Material design and the Animations are the best thing since sliced bread. And then i get the OTA and..... Total Childish crap. Intuitive? For whom?

On Screen Buttons = A sideways triangle, a Circle and a hollow Square. What is intuitive about them? What was Wrong with the VERY INTUITIVE Back Arrow, Home icon and the Stacked Cards?

The Lock screen with the silly Cards, especially with Music. Who thought this design was better and who thought it was intuitive? You have to slide a card or Double tap it, How is that better? How about unlocking the unit? Give it to an iOS user and watch the frustration, then the endless Laughing at how stupid it is. Many Android users are equally frustrated. They slide both ways and if lucky get it to unlock by accident! Maybe a simple "Slide ^ to unlock" Would be useful.

Here's a novel idea, How about an instruction manual instead of Forums where people just guess and vent.

The Animations that the kids like so much? These are always the first thing i disable. But in Lollipop they are there for one reason. To hide the every present Android Lag and stuttering. Of course to disable these children features you have to figure out how to get in Developers mode - Which is Very intuitive !!!

Project Volta - Really Google? An antiquated battery saver mode that disables just about everything and reminds you with bright orange screens = Genius!

Here's a hint Google if you want to save battery Get rid of the Endless Bright White Backgrounds and Light grey text.
What's really mind boggling is, that in all these years nobody can figure out what it is about Android that makes it such a battery pig? Especially in standby! They just come up with more gimmicks that usually make things worse.

Adaptive Brightness? - What a Pile of Crap this implementation is. It is either too dark or too bright. Just Fix Auto Brightness. How hard could it be?

The Pull down Quick Notifications = LOL, Since you got rid of the "swipe up" for Google Now from the lock screen, just put it there. While you are at it get rid of it from the home screen too! and replace it with quick settings. Since Google now is just a right slide away, who needs it at the bottom too? The double pull down feels like a Amateur Hour Work around. (Yes, I know you can do a two finger slide, but to me it is cumbersome and impossible with one hand, which is how i hold my phone.)After the double swipe, you then have to tap the Tiny Battery or Settings button to get to them. How about just Add the settings button as one of the toggles, Get rid of the ones that are pointless. (At least they got rid of the horrendous Google+ / Your name icon - Why it was there is anybody's guess) When you get to battery settings, whats missing = Time on Battery! instead they give you a "Pulled out of their Ass" Guesstimate as to how long your battery might last. When you click the tiny settings icon you are Greeted By the Great Bight White Wall!. Black Backgrounds save battery and are easier to read! The Genius who designed it also redesigned the location icon. When you click it it disables all Location services, Again, Genius! Clicking it again turns Everything on! Even if you were in Battery Save Mode Before, it defaults to High Accuracy mode - (Battery Drain) you then have to dig in the Great white Settings wall to go back to Battery Saver Mode!

The whole Silent / Mute notifications fiasco - Who thinks of these things? Who thinks what they came up with is better than what they had? The long press the power button for Airplane mode and Silent, vibrate, or Sound was ingenious and worked flawlessly. For the one in one thousand that needed more control - i'm sure There are apps for that. Sometimes it is good to rest on your laurels and NOT change just for the sake of change.

There are many other issues but these alone have convinced me NOT to upgrade my moto x when and if its available.
I can't stress it enough, Somebody needs to be fired over these backward Changes.

Some of your info on battery power is misguided - I agree with the UI design issues but as for the battery saving, well...
Battery power doesn't come out of thin air, and like running instead of walking, uses more power when components are at full performance. Animations are a battery drain, as is sound and full CPU speed but the colour makes negligible difference on an LCD or IPS screen (Nexus') unless you're using a cathode ray tube (CRT TVs) or Amoled (Galaxys) since black is not the absence of light. LCDs use a diffuser to give perfect black and that uses even more power. Disabling everything is an exaggeration, the OS makes components use lower power mode, e.g. switching to low power parts of chips (modern mobile CPUs have parts to switch off too), reducing clock speed and conservative use of other features like less cloud syncing (less WiFi). Google could have disabled sounds too, as loud speaker use is a power drain but the line with usability needs to be drawn somewhere. I'd rather have a slow phone at 15% battery for taking calls than no phone. Its not like I'd be stupid enough to be playing games on it in this state and even if I was, I can just disable power save. Oh and I agree about the GPS in battery saver, unless it is actually using the GPS less in battery saver and instead caching the accurate location more often (so apps hit the position cache not the high power hardware) which would be the most sensible thing...

    I have 4 problems (Nexus 5):

    1. Every time I wake my handset up, it opens at the 'Contacts' recent calls screen, rather than my home screen. Very annoying as telephony is only one of a number of things I use my handset for.
    2. When in lock screen, KitKat would show an icon along the top if I'd received a new message / email; now, that only appears once I unlock.
    3. Battery life - much worse.
    4. All email accounts are treated the same in Lollipop; for example, gmail is my 'primary' and hotmail is my 'secondary' and I do not want them combined. I will actively go into my hotmail when I want to check it, I do not want it intermingeld woith my gmail accounts.

It's only been a day and I'm just a normal user, but I am yet to see anything which has enhanced my user experience. Rather, I have only found annoyances. This is not resistance to change - this just looks like a change for change's sake rather than delivering any real benefits at the GUI level. I'm sure it's much better under the hood - but the KitKat GUI was just about right. I think I'll be degrading back to KitKat.

I too wondered about degrading KitKat, but I suspect that involved debauchery - easy to do but I wouldn't recommend it. I did also investigate downgrading KitKat, and that involves unlocking, wiping and flashing your phone manually with old firmware (if a Nexus, it can be downloaded direct from Google's Android website) directly using adb. You will lose your data when unlocking but if you sync to Google cloud beforehand contacts should be restored automatically.

I installed Lollipop on my Nexus 5 5 days ago. I have 3 main issues so far :
    - battery drain : 50% lost overnight with no app open... Will try restart and battery saver mode to see if improves anything.
    - I find my phone is working more slowly than with KitKat
    - and I hope the new version of google calendar is just a big mistake that will be fixed soon.
I've droped using gmail for inbox. Although inbox needs some work , I found it easier to use than the new gmail interface.
Otherwise I'm happy with the overall interface update and the better apps integration, but all in all I don't feel myself amazed by Lollipop. At least so far...

I updated to android 5 2 days ago n in last two days my phone is doing every thing it was suppose to do! No issues using WiFi or any other feature. Battery time has improved a lot! In previous versions the rate of battery drain was exponential but this time in last 2 days I have managed linear battery drain which is proportional to my useage
    Pretty much satisfied
One of main reasons of battery drain could be bright colored menus previously they all were blackish so phone had to use less power now every small bar of display is white with Nk transparency which puts extra load on display! Its just like using phone with full brightness or half brigjtness n its effect on battery time
Smoothness is very gud, typing is pleasant experience, no more miss reads or wrong words due to smuges on the screen. Right word gets selected and auto correct is ever more responsive
I'm pretty satisfied with this update I'm amazed y people r having issues on Nexus 5!

I had problems with camera, it stops working all the time, and only way to fix this temporally is to turn off and on your phone. But shortly after cameras stops again and can't connect, fail to initialize etc.

Music player also doesn't work properly, there are playback errors after 10-20s of song (and it doesn't have to do with file format)

Option "None" in the screen lock part is completely disabled.

No, it really isn't even remotely the same. The previous version 'just worked' and I could select who could override the block on incoming calls.
With this silly reduced implementation, I now have little control over who Google decides are my 'Favourites' (It certainly isn't who they seem to think it is), and Priority mode turns itself off randomly, so my phone is suddenly no longer silent.

So no, Priority does not act at all like silent Mode.
