Android Marshmallow problems and how to fix them

Android Marshmallow is the complete package: it looks good, and there's real substance beneath the surface. With new features and options galore, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update unfortunately brought a few bugs along for the ride. With that in mind, we rounded up the most common Android Marshmallow problems and the solutions for fixing them.

Marshmallow Wi-Fi battery drain

This is an interesting problem, mostly because it is a case of the boy who called wolf. A lot of Marshmallow users have been posting screenshots of their battery usage page, which show Wi-Fi to be the biggest battery drain on Marshmallow. In many cases, that's just false reporting, and the device's battery life is actually unaffected by Wi-Fi, but some other users are seeing the same data and it is affecting their battery.

Several solutions have been suggested for this Marshmallow problem. The first is to go to Settings > Backup and reset > Network settings reset to clear all your connection data. This includes Bluetooth and cellular data, so you'll need to reconfigure everything afterwards.

You can also try disabling Wi-Fi scanning in Settings > Location > Scanning (via overflow menu). This function can be scanning in the background even if you have turned Wi-Fi itself off. Other people have had success simply by going to Settings > Location > Mode > Battery saving.

Some extremists have suggested a full factory reset, followed by flashing the factory image, followed by another reset through recovery. Others are factory resetting and starting a fresh install (ie not using Tap & Go to set up your old device) and then reconnecting to Wi-Fi. Personally, I recommend figuring out whether what you're experiencing is bad reporting or a real problem before you attempt any of these fixes.

General Marshmallow battery drain

Besides mysterious battery drain there's also legitimate battery drain, a staple of Android updates since time immemorial. Well, since 2009 anyway. The quickest solution to fix battery drain following an Android update is to update your apps (so that they are compatible with the new Android version) and then wipe the app and system caches to clear out old data.

You can clear app caches individually or as a whole by taking the following routes: to clear them individually, go to Settings > Apps > select app > Storage > Clear cache; to clear all app caches simultaneously, go to Settings > Storage and USB > Cached data > OK.

androidpit nexus5 problems 2
The first cache you should clear is the app cache. / © ANDROIDPIT

To clear the system cache, turn your phone or tablet off and then press Power and Volume Down until you see the Fastboot menu. Use the volume buttons to highlight Recovery and press the Power button to select it. If you see the robot on its back, hold Power and press Volume Up once to access the recovery menu. Use the volume buttons to select Wipe cache partition and press Power to confirm. Once you've wiped the system cache, you can reboot and your battery drain problem should be solved.

If your battery drain still persists after clearing the caches, the only step remaining is to factory reset your phone. First, back up everything on your Android and make sure all of your important files are safe. Then, go to Settings > Backup and reset > Factory data reset > Reset phone > Erase everything. If the problem continues even after rebooting and restoring your data, try to re-flash the Marshmallow firmware. See our guide on how to manually install Android Marshmallow for guidance.

Marshmallow installation problems

If your phone hangs up during the installation of Marshmallow, the best option is to wait. Sometimes the first boot after an update takes a long time. If it's still hung up a long time later, you can wipe the system cache through Recovery mode, using the steps outlined above. Restart and attempt installation again. If the same things happens, you'll have to back up your data and factory reset before trying to update again.

Marshmallow Wi-Fi connectivity issues

If you're getting spotty Wi-Fi connectivity on Android Marshmallow, there are a few things you can do. First, try toggling Airplane Mode on and off. If that doesn't work, turn off Wi-Fi, reboot your phone and turn it back on. Next, forget the connection and reconnect to it. Finally, go to Settings > Backup and reset > Network settings reset.

Marshmallow stability and performance issues

Not all updates are perfectly stable in the early days. That's why Nexus folk get them first, so they can find the bugs and report back to HQ before everyone else gets them. That's not really true, but hopefully it makes early adopters feel like they're performing a public service when dealing with new update problems on Android.

If you find that your version of Marshmallow is unstable – random reboots, app crashes, glitches and stutters, strange behavior and so on – then you have a couple of options. Simply turning your phone off for a minute before restarting it might fix the issue. The next step is to try to identify the issue, to see whether it's app-related or caused by the system itself.

androidpit nexus5 problems 6
Safe mode will help you diagnose whether apps or Android are the source of a problem. / © ANDROIDPIT

To identify a problematic app, boot into safe mode, by holding down the Power button and then long-pressing Power off. Safe mode disables all apps you've installed so you can assess whether the core system apps are functioning normally. If they are, then one of your installed apps is the problem and you should try systematically uninstalling them one at a time to find the culprit.

If Marshmallow is unstable even in safe mode, then it's an OS problem, not an app problem. You can try clearing the system cache by following the steps outlined in the Battery Drain section above and, if that still hasn't fixed your problem, your last resort is to back up your data and factory reset your phone (also covered above).

A factory reset is the one solution to rule them all. Just back up your data first. / © ANDROIDPIT

Marshmallow charging problems

Despite Marshmallow's new USB charging standards, Android 6.0 charging problems seem pretty common, from devices that drain faster than they charge to phones that simply won't charge at all. Marshmallow is making users earn the battery benefits of its Doze mode and app standby. Google's official solution to a phone that won't charge on Marshmallow is a factory reset, the instructions for this can be found above.

Marshmallow mobile data problems

If your connection to mobile data behaves strangely after the update, try toggling airplane mode on and off, and then doing the same with mobile data in the quick settings. If this still doesn't work, turn your phone off for a minute and then restart it, at which point you'll be asked to re-enter your SIM pin code.

If that still doesn't work you can try removing the SIM card entirely and then reinserting it. If all else fails, contact your carrier to see if there are any known Android Marshmallow problems on your network.

Marshmallow not connecting to PC

If you're having Marshmallow USB connectivity issues, it's most likely because you haven't selected the right option on your phone's software. By default, the device will likely be set to USB charging mode, meaning you won't be able to access your files.

When you plug your device into your PC over USB, a notification will appear saying Connected for charging. Press on this and you will be presented with four options. The one you're most likely to want is Transferring media files (MTP). This will let you copy files to and from your device via USB. Transferring images (PTP) is your backup option, in the event that MTP is not supported. PTP will make your computer think you've attached a digital camera, allowing for the automated transfer of media files.

Marshmallow 'insufficient storage available' message

If you're being told there's not enough storage space on Marshmallow, it might be related to your SD card. Although Marshmallow now allows SD cards to be formatted as internal memory, there are still apps that cannot be stored on the SD card. Head to Settings > AppsHere, you can press on any app and then tap Storage > Change and select SDCARD. If the SD card option doesn't appear, it's because the app cannot be stored there and must remain on your actual internal storage.

If this isn't the problem, then you need to make some space on your device's internal memory another way. Clearing app caches is a good place to start. Some devices allow mass cache clearing. Head to Settings > Storage. If you see Cached data here, press it and then press Delete in the dialogue box that appears. If you don't see this option, you will have to go the manual route. Head to Settings > Apps / Application manager and press on any app. Then, select Storage and press Clear cache. You will need to go down your list of apps and clear the cache on as many as you can before you succumb to mind-numbing boredom.

Once you've cleared out your caches, there will hopefully be considerably more space. If you still need more, you will have to start uninstalling apps and deleting media. Make sure you backup any files you wish to keep for later, though.

Hello. I have a Samsung Note 4 and the last update has blocked it. I cant work with my phone and every time i try to open it, phone blocks. Now it started to turn off and i cant turn it on again for a several hours. Can somebody help or tell me what should I do. I believe that whoever made this update has some explanation to give and to give a lot of help to his users. This is a smart phone that is made for users to work with all programs and should not make these problems such as turn off wifi or every time you use an aplication you should than turn it off. This phone costed a lot to me and i take care not to brake it or watch out from viruses but now to have problem with official android system its not ok at all.

Two brand new T-Mobile LG K-7s with latest software Go into Facebook Marketplace, try to change locations, shuts down Facebook. T-Mobile Tech Support unable to help. Hard reset phone, same issue. T-Mobile says buy another phone. Phones are paid off, why buy another phone? At help appreciated. Anyone else having same issue? Think it is a hardware or software conflict with LG K-7. Second set of brand new phones doing same thing.

I have a samsung galaxy A5 (2017), I've been having an issue where i can only hold my touch for about three seconds. I can do stuff but when I try to send voice texts on some messaging apps and play games that requires continuous touch that's when it happens. Can't hold on for more than three seconds, it releases itself even tho I'm still touching the screen. Can anyone tell me what's happening? It would mean so much to me thank you!

Anyone know how to make the "screen overlay detected - go to settings" "error" go away?! I have disabled every system and non system app that had it, off. I have quadruple checked. I have cleared out my cache and cookies. I have deleted the data as well on the 3 apps it's happening to just in case it was stuck in their craw somewhere. I've deleted the system cache, and rebooted. I've done everything but delete the data IN settings bc well that's scary. As is a factory reset. This only started with Marshell Mellow as far as I recall. And I'm just trying to give Walgreens location access! Not the keys to the White House! Please someone help! And if u live in or near Chicago, and u solve this maddening issue, then it's dinner and drinks on me. I'm THAT serious. It's making my BP climb higher and higher with every failed thing I try. So who's up for the challenge? Please! Help! I can't take it!!! Thanks in advance, Cat

Press the search (near top right) in settings and enter "Draw over other apps". Looking at "Enabled" ones that say Yes, find the active app (that is causing the trouble) and deny the Permission.

So before the update when I was on 5.1.1 also known as lollipop I had full access to my APN settings (I had done a hack that let me get free unlimited high-speed data and unlimited hotspot on boost Mobile). Now the marshmallow update won't let me access my APN settings. I spent the past 5 days researching this and I found out that my APN settings are locked by a hidden menu. In trying to figure out the best way to get around this by either downgrading to lollipop agian (idk how) or going to the vendor store to ask for a downgrade (if possible) or even rooting my phone to get access to the hidden menu that says something on the lines of "com.android.hiddenmenu./modemmprotecal/unlockapnsettings". If some one could help me I would be soi great full.

170708 - Update replacing earlier issues list: installation and performance problems mostly solved on an inexpensive (underpowered) Acer tablet by 1) using Greenify; 2) use Developer Options to disable animations, limit processes; 3) use microSD as external rather than adoptable storage; 4) wipe system cache after a large system update; 5) Periodic checking of Misc. Storage and individual app caches. Android M restrictions block some cleaners like CCleaner, but Super Cleaner (Hawk App Studio) will do it after a long permissions process - too cartoonish for my taste but it works.

The next "trick" works for me:
    - go to Settings
    - go to Network connections> Tethering and Mobile hotspots
    - turn Mobile Hotspot to ON
    - wait 10 sec's and turn Mobile Hotspot to Off
    And I can activate WiFi.

Sometimes I have to do it twice, but in General it works after the first shot.

I have called google and they had me restart it in safe mode but that didn't fix it, so they told me to call LG, who told me to set it back to factory default which i did, and it still doesn't work. They want me to mail it in for repair, but i'm not convinced this is a hardware problem but more of a problem with android software.

I got insufficeint storage space message and the avaialble space was some 400MB, I deleted few big size apps and made free space of 400MB approx. But, after almost 10 days, now I am again spacing same insufficient storage space without installing back the app. Now again available memory is 400MB. I dont know how the storage space is getting occupied??

I have the Note Edge, which I was in LOVE with until after the marshmallow update. Battery drain is ridiculous. Seriously, I just stay tethered to the charger. Apps crash the phone. Plugging in the charger crashes the phone. Phone crashes at 30% battery life or lower. Call me a cynic, but am I the only one who thinks it's NOT coincidental that this update creates major frustration with our current devices JUST IN TIME for the S7 release?

I am an IT Professional who labored through 2 weeks of struggle with my Note 4 after the Marshmallow update. Take it from me...Just do a factory reset now if you are having issues. Nothing else worked. Don't waste your time. I had random reboots and app crashes 5-10 times daily based on phone use including every time I plugged in a charging cable. Yes a factory reset is the biggest pain in rear of all time but it in the end you will get your phone back to 100%. I have had zero issues with any apps or reboots since I did mine...wish I would have done it sooner.

Since the Marshmallow update the Facebook and Twitter apps don't refresh and Internet Explorer won't load up pages. Ive tried uninstall and reinstall but problems persist. There doesn't seem to be anywhere to go for a solution. I wish the update could be removed and revert back to the previous. My advice is don't update with the new software as it seems to cause more problems and there is no support . My phone is pretty much useless and will probably need to get an iPhone and ditch the Samsung Android.

The insufficient memory message appears even when there is far more memory available than required. It is reported to be a problem associated with Android RAM overhead rather than actual storage needs. Android seems to be must less efficient at using RAM than the iPhone is. I say this because I've been experimenting with both over the past week after experiencing the memory warning even with 6GB free on the Android's memory and 54GB free on an SD card. With all that memory I can't even move a 23k app from the internal memory to the SD. Some users have success in clearing the cache, and many others, like me, do not.

I have the note 4 and since the update everything is crazy slow, text messages take forever to send, pictures have to be sent multiple times before going through. I went to the AT&T store and there is nothing to be done. I would even settle for factory reset to get it back to working proper. I have tried clearing the cache and it just sits there calculating. Battery drain is also horrid, luckily I have 4 batteries so I can swap out and charge at the same time. It would be nice if there was information on an update to fix the bugs.

I'm on an HTC E8 and just downloaded the update. Everything is great EXCEPT: now, when I try to make a phone call, there's a huge delay or super long lag in connecting the call. In fact, the first couple times, I couldn't figure out what was going on, so I hit the "Call" button a few times b/c it would not respond, and that ended up with me calling the same number a couple times or so. It eventually connects, but takes anywhere from 10-30 seconds. Please help!

I installed 6.0.1 on my GS5 and the batter drain is off the charts. I've tried following your tutorial but cannot access Fastboot. The phone just restarts each time I push the buttons specified below.

"To clear the system cache, turn your phone or tablet off and then press Power and Volume Down until you see the Fastboot menu. Use the volume buttons to highlight Recovery and press the Power button to select it. If you see the robot on its back, hold Power and press Volume Up once to access the recovery menu. Use the volume buttons to select Wipe cache partition and press Power to confirm.

Try pressing d volume up+volume down+power buttons simulteanously. I think this should help you to access the fastboot mode.

Updated to Marshmallow on my Galaxy Note 4 a month ago. I have been getting notifications constantly for no apparent reason (no text, no app, etc). Very annoying, especially @ night (occurs even though Do Not Disturb is on). Have booted to safe mode but still occurs so appears to be OS. I really don't want to have to do another backup & reset. Any ideas how to stop the annoying notification sounds? I have to turn to silent @ night!

I have a galaxy s5 and updated to marshmallow a few days ago and now every time I make a phone call or text an alarm icon appears on the notification status bar for about 30 seconds then disappears. I don't have any alarms set and I have wiped my system cache and cleared all my app's cache and I still have the problem. Everything else seems to work ok but the pesky alarm icon appears then disappears after a call or text which drives me crazy.

I just bought an LG Leon Risio. First of all, there was no way I could have the phone recognised by my Mac Book Pro (it didn't appear on Finder or on Disk Utility) but could use Bluetooth data exchange between both devices with apparently no problems. I tried to copy some music into the phone using the SD slot on my Mac, but some tracks (about half of them) could not be played on the phone (message shows: sorry, this song could not be played). And also, internal storage began to clot very fast. Factory internal storage is 8 GB, System files take over 4.5 GB. Tried to move what I could to SD Card, still left me with about 700 mb for the rest of my phone's life (I have had it for two days!!!). Other thing, I tried to change downloads default folder (both for browser and Bluetooth) from internal to SD Card. Utterly impossible. The option (which should be on the Settings Menu under the Bluetooth tab) simply does not exist. My big Q, is this: if something is not broken, why try to fix it? It is supposed that upgrades are for the better. Earlier versions of Android where a pain already.

Since installing Marshmallow on my LG G3 D852, I have had an issue with my Micro SD Card. Each time that the phone battery dies, when I re-charge and turn my phone on again, I'm told that my SD card is corrupted and I have to reformat it...losing anything I had saved on there, unless I upload files to the computer first. PAIN IN THE ARSE.
I've tried formatting the SD Card on the computer. I've tried a factory reset on my phone. I've tried different SD cards with different brands. Nothing seems to fix it.
Any thoughts on a next step or a way to fix this? I haven't found many forums or help online.

Having a few problems with Marshmallow on Oneplus Two phone. After updating I cannot figure out for the life of me how to shut off this priority notification thing. I want all calls and texts and what not, but under the "Priority only Allows" settings there doesn't seem to be an off option. Also on this screen under "Messages" and "Calls" No matter which option I choose nothing changes from the default selection "From starred contacts only" and the "Repeat Callers" option should be able to toggle on and off, but tapping it does nothing. The other problem I am having is the media volume of my phone has drastically been cut down. When playing games, for instance, I would have the media volume set at just before halfway so it would be loud enough to hear, whereas now I need it to almost max volume to hear it.

Major Update leaves garbled garbage behind. Wipe cache from boot loader will take care of many problems. App cache or update for single App problems. But a Factory reset for a clean and fresh install followed by the bootloader wipe after all Apps and updates are reinstalled. Will correct 95%, you would have to wait for a update for the other 5%. Note 4 runs great, time invested for BACKUP, BACKUP BACKUP and fresh install, Priceless.........

I hope that this will help. Back up everything, write down all passwords. Power down phone - remove battery - hold power button for 60 seconds - next one hand, press and hold both volume up and home, then add, press and hold power on, feel vibration, let go, wait, DOS looking screen scroll down to wipe cache, press power button, confirm yes if asked, (you can stop here, press powerbutton to reboot when prompted, or I advise) scroll down to factory reset then reinstall boot and start fresh. My Note 4 has been fine since Friday. My wife and youngest daughter need to allow time for me to update their S5s.

In most of these Android forums, they recommend you ditch the Facebook app altogether and either use the mobile web version (on the native internet browser, or Chrome), or download Facebook "wrapper" app like Hermit, Metal, or Swipe. Not as functional as the FB app, but they will help with battery drain issues and saves on mobile data.

I am in a crisis after upgrading to Marshmallow. All my Google apps: play store, Gmail, google+, etc are not working. When I try to open play store I get an error message: "there was a problem communicating with google servers. Try again later." Same with Gmail and all other apps (except for YouTube - I can watch some videos but can't sign in). It's been a week now and still I can't gain access.

This is what I have tried so far: cleared cache/data in play services&play store, remove accounts(I can't sign in), disable-enable play serv/store, granted permissions for google apps, downgraded to the factory versions of play services/store, factory restore (twice). All failed.

I basically have no whatsapp, twitter, Facebook, and all my other apps. No email as well. How do I fix this? Can I uninstall marshmallow?

None of the fixes in the article seemed to work, but I managed to find a solution: changing the "network mode" (not sure what it's called in English) from LTE/WCDMA/GSM to something else and then back again. Fixed! It's under "more networks" and then "mobile data" or somesuch.

I have an AT&T LG G3, it updated to Android Version 6.0 Security patch level 2016-03-01, Kernal Version 3.4.0 Software Version D85030K last week. Battery drain is rather high from what I am used to with it, have had it for about 2 years. Now I'm at 24% before noon. I tried the power off, hold power button and vol down to get to the menu to clear cache, but the phone boots to "SAFE MODE" not the menu... Suggestion?

This is the only solution I have found...It's a pain and has to be done every time I connect phone to the computer. Firstly you must enable Developer Options (If You tab the "About Phone" 7 times Developer Options Appears). Click on Developer Options and go down to Select USB configuration and click on it...MTP will engaged..Click on Charging and then click on MTP again and the device will appear on your P.C. It works for me...let me know how you get on...My phone is a Moto G 3rd Generation..

I am using lenovo a7000 with lollipop android 5.0. My phone shown a notification yesterday under system update that my device will be upgraded to marshmallow 6.0. I gladly accepted and clicked OK to download the software by using mobile air-tel 3g net. It took nearly 12 hours to upgrade without any problem and the download was successful and the device gave a choice to reboot and I clicked OK.

After reboot, all the applications in the internal memory were there. But when I saw my contact it was blank and likewise the call log. I made received calls today and they were not saved in the call log. I tried to freshly add names to contact but in vain. So many times switched off and restarted my device and also removed sims and battery, reinserted the same again with no use. All my old messages were shown and sometimes with blank screen.

Kindly advise me to fix the problem and set right the same. Factory reset will fix the problem to restore my contacts and call log? May we go back to lollipop?

    Thanks in advance..

further on: Using your card as ‘Portable Storage’

Media, pictures, movies already on the card will be visible in the device photo gallery and media apps. New content side loaded to the card will also be available and viewable in media apps on the device
Through the Motorola camera application settings, you can select the default storage for pictures and movies captured through the Motorola camera app. Third party camera might not offer this option.
Some third party applications will enable you to store their content on the ‘portable’ SD card, as in lollipop; but only if the application developer chose to do so (Google Play Music)
If you select a card as portable storage, you will NOT be able to move applications to the card, nor will play store automatically install applications to this card

  • 2
Erick de Braal Apr 16, 2016 Link to comment

i read an article that says that apps cannot be moved to an sd card in marshmallow: IMPORTANT FOR USERS UPGRADING FROM LOLLIPOP : if you received Android 6.0 as part of an OTA upgrade, any application which you had previously moved to (or installed on) the SD card with the legacy Motorola “Move apps to SD card” feature will still run from the card; but you will not be able to move new applications to that card. You will need to format your card as internal storage before being able to move new applications to the card.

I have 6.01 on my S7 device and have a problem with some websites only on mobile data. Samsung tried to fix the problem and in the end said it was the websites fault. can someone give me workaround please?
The fault is... when visiting the (example site) mylotto.co.nz I can register and login but only once... sometimes the pages freeze as well. The only cure is to clear the internet cache and start again. yet when using another device connected to my device via hotspot, it has no problem. Samsung say this is not a device or marshmallow fault. I disagree.
When on wifi - everything works again.. I'm a bit disillusioned because I just came over from the dark apple side.

My battery used to last 2 days with normal usage, now I can almost watch it drain by the minute. It also keeps trying to join WiFi even after I turn it off! I have gone into WiFi settings and disabled all automatic WiFi connection settings and it still keeps coming back on randomly all day! BOTH are NOT acceptable! I just upgraded my Moto G to Marshmallow. I thought that the "internal memory storage on SD card" feature would finally solve the stupid problem of running out of memory (why does this problem *even exist*?!? a linux kernel and all its applications can be made to run on any sort of memory media - why does Android have to be so picky about memory?). But no. Much to my surprise a good 90% of the applications I have on my phone cannot be moved to the SD card - and most of them are not critical apps, they are just flight booking, banking, shopping, mail, photos, the usual stupid things that is.

Why can't everything be moved to the SD card? Am I doing something wrong? Everything else is mostly fine, this one is a royal PITA.

P.S. Yes I installed AppMgr III but it's just more of the same: it says apps can't be moved. And I don't have the time and will to root my phone, thank you.

HTC One (M8) - T-Mobile - After upgrading to Marshmallow I found wi-fi would disconnect after a few seconds. The connect would be made as I would get mail etc downloaded. I tried all suggestions here, still the same.

I booted into safe-mode (instructions found in this article) and found my wi-fi was stable. So it must be an app causing the issue. While in safe mode I updated all my apps, rebooted and all is well.

Same here... My connection used to be instantaneous as I pulled into my driveway. Now, there's a huge delay.. Also, noticed that the battery seems to be draining faster - but I'm willing to wait and see what happens after about a week. From my understanding battery optimization isn't reached until after your phone monitors your usage habits.

Just in case anyone is interested: I solved it with complete reset to factory settings (run full backup before!!!) - afterwards it worked fine. WLAN connectivity as usual, battery consumption as well. Only bad thing is, that network/bluetooth connections need to be setup from the scratch (and some other settings e.g. in mail programs)... so...could be worse at the end.

Marshmallow was working fine for me until i installed an update today after which my screen has been toggling like crazy. Tried all the tips advised but there seems to be no hope. Kindly advise regarding the solution. I use a nexus 5.

I've had a massively improved battery life since upgrading to marshmallow. I've noticed playing music via Bluetooth a bit buggy sometimes but I'm guessing that's probably more to do with google play music needing an extra update rather than the OS itself.
Massive improvements compared to KitKat for me. I'm on the N6 from last year not the new one.
