Android Marshmallow problems and how to fix them

Update: Two new problems with solutions

Android Marshmallow is the complete package: it looks good, and there's real substance beneath the surface. With new features and options galore, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update unfortunately brought a few bugs along for the ride. With that in mind, we rounded up the most common Android Marshmallow problems and the solutions for fixing them.

Marshmallow Wi-Fi battery drain

This is an interesting problem, mostly because it is a case of the boy who called wolf. A lot of Marshmallow users have been posting screenshots of their battery usage page, which show Wi-Fi to be the biggest battery drain on Marshmallow. In many cases, that's just false reporting, and the device's battery life is actually unaffected by Wi-Fi, but some other users are seeing the same data and it is affecting their battery.

Several solutions have been suggested for this Marshmallow problem. The first is to go to Settings > Backup and reset > Network settings reset to clear all your connection data. This includes Bluetooth and cellular data, so you'll need to reconfigure everything afterwards.

You can also try disabling Wi-Fi scanning in Settings > Location > Scanning (via overflow menu). This function can be scanning in the background even if you have turned Wi-Fi itself off. Other people have had success simply by going to Settings > Location > Mode > Battery saving.

Some extremists have suggested a full factory reset, followed by flashing the factory image, followed by another reset through recovery. Others are factory resetting and starting a fresh install (ie not using Tap & Go to set up your old device) and then reconnecting to Wi-Fi. Personally, I recommend figuring out whether what you're experiencing is bad reporting or a real problem before you attempt any of these fixes.

General Marshmallow battery drain

Besides mysterious battery drain there's also legitimate battery drain, a staple of Android updates since time immemorial. Well, since 2009 anyway. The quickest solution to fix battery drain following an Android update is to update your apps (so that they are compatible with the new Android version) and then wipe the app and system caches to clear out old data.

You can clear app caches individually or as a whole by taking the following routes: to clear them individually, go to Settings > Apps > select app > Storage > Clear cache; to clear all app caches simultaneously, go to Settings > Storage and USB > Cached data > OK.

The first cache you should clear is the app cache. / © ANDROIDPIT

To clear the system cache, turn your phone or tablet off and then press Power and Volume Down until you see the Fastboot menu. Use the volume buttons to highlight Recovery and press the Power button to select it. If you see the robot on its back, hold Power and press Volume Up once to access the recovery menu. Use the volume buttons to select Wipe cache partition and press Power to confirm. Once you've wiped the system cache, you can reboot and your battery drain problem should be solved.

If your battery drain still persists after clearing the caches, the only step remaining is to factory reset your phone. First, back up everything on your Android and make sure all of your important files are safe. Then, go to Settings > Backup and reset > Factory data reset > Reset phone > Erase everything. If the problem continues even after rebooting and restoring your data, try to re-flash the Marshmallow firmware. See our guide on how to manually install Android Marshmallow for guidance.

Marshmallow installation problems

If your phone hangs up during the installation of Marshmallow, the best option is to wait. Sometimes the first boot after an update takes a long time. If it's still hung up a long time later, you can wipe the system cache through Recovery mode, using the steps outlined above. Restart and attempt installation again. If the same things happens, you'll have to back up your data and factory reset before trying to update again.

Marshmallow Wi-Fi connectivity issues

If you're getting spotty Wi-Fi connectivity on Android Marshmallow, there are a few things you can do. First, try toggling Airplane Mode on and off. If that doesn't work, turn off Wi-Fi, reboot your phone and turn it back on. Next, forget the connection and reconnect to it. Finally, go to Settings > Backup and reset > Network settings reset.

Marshmallow stability and performance issues

Not all updates are perfectly stable in the early days. That's why Nexus folk get them first, so they can find the bugs and report back to HQ before everyone else gets them. That's not really true, but hopefully it makes early adopters feel like they're performing a public service when dealing with new update problems on Android.

If you find that your version of Marshmallow is unstable – random reboots, app crashes, glitches and stutters, strange behavior and so on – then you have a couple of options. Simply turning your phone off for a minute before restarting it might fix the issue. The next step is to try to identify the issue, to see whether it's app-related or caused by the system itself.

androidpit nexus5 problems 6
Safe mode will help you diagnose whether apps or Android are the source of a problem. / © ANDROIDPIT

To identify a problematic app, boot into safe mode, by holding down the Power button and then long-pressing Power off. Safe mode disables all apps you've installed so you can assess whether the core system apps are functioning normally. If they are, then one of your installed apps is the problem and you should try systematically uninstalling them one at a time to find the culprit.

If Marshmallow is unstable even in safe mode, then it's an OS problem, not an app problem. You can try clearing the system cache by following the steps outlined in the Battery Drain section above and, if that still hasn't fixed your problem, your last resort is to back up your data and factory reset your phone (also covered above).

A factory reset is the one solution to rule them all. Just back up your data first. / © ANDROIDPIT

Marshmallow charging problems

Despite Marshmallow's new USB charging standards, Android 6.0 charging problems seem pretty common, from devices that drain faster than they charge to phones that simply won't charge at all. Marshmallow is making users earn the battery benefits of its Doze mode and app standby. Google's official solution to a phone that won't charge on Marshmallow is a factory reset, the instructions for this can be found above.

Marshmallow mobile data problems

If your connection to mobile data behaves strangely after the update, try toggling airplane mode on and off, and then doing the same with mobile data in the quick settings. If this still doesn't work, turn your phone off for a minute and then restart it, at which point you'll be asked to re-enter your SIM pin code.

If that still doesn't work you can try removing the SIM card entirely and then reinserting it. If all else fails, contact your carrier to see if there are any known Android Marshmallow problems on your network.

Marshmallow not connecting to PC

If you're having Marshmallow USB connectivity issues, it's most likely because you haven't selected the right option on your phone's software. By default, the device will likely be set to USB charging mode, meaning you won't be able to access your files.

When you plug your device into your PC over USB, a notification will appear saying Connected for charging. Press on this and you will be presented with four options. The one you're most likely to want is Transferring media files (MTP). This will let you copy files to and from your device via USB. Transferring images (PTP) is your backup option, in the event that MTP is not supported. PTP will make your computer think you've attached a digital camera, allowing for the automated transfer of media files.

Marshmallow 'insufficient storage available' message

If you're being told there's not enough storage space on Marshmallow, it might be related to your SD card. Although Marshmallow now allows SD cards to be formatted as internal memory, there are still apps that cannot be stored on the SD card. Head to Settings > AppsHere, you can press on any app and then tap Storage > Change and select SDCARD. If the SD card option doesn't appear, it's because the app cannot be stored there and must remain on your actual internal storage.

If this isn't the problem, then you need to make some space on your device's internal memory another way. Clearing app caches is a good place to start. Some devices allow mass cache clearing. Head to Settings > Storage. If you see Cached data here, press it and then press Delete in the dialogue box that appears. If you don't see this option, you will have to go the manual route. Head to Settings > Apps / Application manager and press on any app. Then, select Storage and press Clear cache. You will need to go down your list of apps and clear the cache on as many as you can before you succumb to mind-numbing boredom.

Once you've cleared out your caches, there will hopefully be considerably more space. If you still need more, you will have to start uninstalling apps and deleting media. Make sure you backup any files you wish to keep for later, though.

Anyone know how to make the "screen overlay detected - go to settings" "error" go away?! I have disabled every system and non system app that had it, off. I have quadruple checked. I have cleared out my cache and cookies. I have deleted the data as well on the 3 apps it's happening to just in case it was stuck in their craw somewhere. I've deleted the system cache, and rebooted. I've done everything but delete the data IN settings bc well that's scary. As is a factory reset. This only started with Marshell Mellow as far as I recall. And I'm just trying to give Walgreens location access! Not the keys to the White House! Please someone help! And if u live in or near Chicago, and u solve this maddening issue, then it's dinner and drinks on me. I'm THAT serious. It's making my BP climb higher and higher with every failed thing I try. So who's up for the challenge? Please! Help! I can't take it!!! Thanks in advance, Cat

    • Press the search (near top right) in settings and enter "Draw over other apps". Looking at "Enabled" ones that say Yes, find the active app (that is causing the trouble) and deny the Permission.

  • So before the update when I was on 5.1.1 also known as lollipop I had full access to my APN settings (I had done a hack that let me get free unlimited high-speed data and unlimited hotspot on boost Mobile). Now the marshmallow update won't let me access my APN settings. I spent the past 5 days researching this and I found out that my APN settings are locked by a hidden menu. In trying to figure out the best way to get around this by either downgrading to lollipop agian (idk how) or going to the vendor store to ask for a downgrade (if possible) or even rooting my phone to get access to the hidden menu that says something on the lines of "com.android.hiddenmenu./modemmprotecal/unlockapnsettings". If some one could help me I would be soi great full.

I just decided to factory reset and this didn't help. So hardware problem? Is there a way to know? It's 6.0.1. don't want to buy a new phone! Thanks.

170708 - Update replacing earlier issues list: installation and performance problems mostly solved on an inexpensive (underpowered) Acer tablet by 1) using Greenify; 2) use Developer Options to disable animations, limit processes; 3) use microSD as external rather than adoptable storage; 4) wipe system cache after a large system update; 5) Periodic checking of Misc. Storage and individual app caches. Android M restrictions block some cleaners like CCleaner, but Super Cleaner (Hawk App Studio) will do it after a long permissions process - too cartoonish for my taste but it works.

The next "trick" works for me:
    - go to Settings
    - go to Network connections> Tethering and Mobile hotspots
    - turn Mobile Hotspot to ON
    - wait 10 sec's and turn Mobile Hotspot to Off
    And I can activate WiFi.

Sometimes I have to do it twice, but in General it works after the first shot.

  • after upgrading for 6.0 the dial up tone is not working.if i call some one or they call me i cant hear or talk and they cant hear me too.how can i fix this

    • I have a similar problem. I can barely hear them, but they can hear me. It's a little better if i put it on speaker phone. I have called google and they had me restart it in safe mode but that didn't fix it, so they told me to call LG, who told me to set it back to factory default which i did, and it still doesn't work. They want me to mail it in for repair, but i'm not convinced this is a hardware problem but more of a problem with android software.

  • Ive upgraded samsung j5 vodacom to 6.0.1 working well, however facebook cannot be moved to sdcard :( I no longer have enough memory on the phone memory. It cannot use sdcard as internal memory :( Other than that its working well. Cant move my vodacom app or remove the built in apps like deezer, vodacom backup vodcaom appstore. Google hanouts I dont want these apps taking up memory. cant do much now, as I have hardly anything on the pone and its full :( disappointment that facebook you cant move to sdcard or remove, 200meg wasted.

  • My relatively new Samsung J5 is trying to update to Marshmallow, but despite having relatively few apps and an SD card to which I have transferred everything I can transfer, I get the following message:"An additional 1.24GB of available space is required in your device storage to download and install the software update (946.57MB)" This message seems as if I have more than enough. Can anyone explain please?

    • I have j5 and upgraded to 6.0.1 Its best to remove all apps and delete cache data. I managed to get the update on. Working well. Only problem is the facebook app it cant be moved to sdcard. So I have run out of space and cant do much. I have rested to factory defaults, unfortunately the phone doesn't support sdcard as internal memory.

I am using Samsung On5. I am facing lot of storage related issues after upgrading to Marshmallow from lollipop. I got insufficeint storage space message and the avaialble space was some 400MB, I deleted few big size apps and made free space of 400MB approx. But, after almost 10 days, now I am again spacing same insufficient storage space without installing back the app. Now again available memory is 400MB. I dont know how the storage space is getting occupied??

  • I have the Note Edge, which I was in LOVE with until after the marshmallow update. Battery drain is ridiculous. Seriously, I just stay tethered to the charger. Apps crash the phone. Plugging in the charger crashes the phone. Phone crashes at 30% battery life or lower. Call me a cynic, but am I the only one who thinks it's NOT coincidental that this update creates major frustration with our current devices JUST IN TIME for the S7 release?

    • Can't be a coincidence. I updated to 6.0.1 on my Edge as well, and I've been having the same issue, even after buying a new battery.
I ended up updating my Note 4 and I have the issue on both phones now.

    • My phones also get crazy hot (I've measured above 120F on the back of them with a laser thermometer several times). This is probably tied to the battery crash.

  • Brian Oct 11, 2016 Link to comment

I am an IT Professional who labored through 2 weeks of struggle with my Note 4 after the Marshmallow update. Take it from me...Just do a factory reset now if you are having issues. Nothing else worked. Don't waste your time. I had random reboots and app crashes 5-10 times daily based on phone use including every time I plugged in a charging cable. Yes a factory reset is the biggest pain in rear of all time but it in the end you will get your phone back to 100%. I have had zero issues with any apps or reboots since I did mine...wish I would have done it sooner.

  • Since the Marshmallow update the Facebook and Twitter apps don't refresh and Internet Explorer won't load up pages. Ive tried uninstall and reinstall but problems persist. There doesn't seem to be anywhere to go for a solution. I wish the update could be removed and revert back to the previous. My advice is don't update with the new software as it seems to cause more problems and there is no support . My phone is pretty much useless and will probably need to get an iPhone and ditch the Samsung Android.

  • Recently I bought a Marshmallow 6.0 firefly Android.its a good phone but the display keeps timing out every 15 secs even if I set it to 30 mins it still sleep automatically how can I fix or disable this feature permanent? Ty

  • After to marshmallow, I've not been able to open play store, connect to pc and receive through Bluetooth

  • Hi..i have huawei g play mini and i updated it to marshmallow manually...it looks more better than before when it had kitkat....but after the update i have not been able to connect my dslr to my phone through otg cable whereas i could connect it before when it was operating kitkat...plz help this out

  • The insufficient memory message appears even when there is far more memory available than required. It is reported to be a problem associated with Android RAM overhead rather than actual storage needs. Android seems to be must less efficient at using RAM than the iPhone is. I say this because I've been experimenting with both over the past week after experiencing the memory warning even with 6GB free on the Android's memory and 54GB free on an SD card. With all that memory I can't even move a 23k app from the internal memory to the SD. Some users have success in clearing the cache, and many others, like me, do not.

  • Hi there I've updated my phone with new update on marshmallow, since then it keeps saying about screen over lay but don't know how to get rid of it pls help as got pop ups to

  • I have an LG G3, and ever since the Marshmallow update, I constantly have an issue with my SD card. Randomly it will get unmounted and be told that it's corrupted, and then it'll automatically remount itself. It will do this throughout the day. I bought 2 brand new cards and the issue exists with all of them. I never had this issue prior to the update. What's the fix???

  • I have the note 4 and since the update everything is crazy slow, text messages take forever to send, pictures have to be sent multiple times before going through. I went to the AT&T store and there is nothing to be done. I would even settle for factory reset to get it back to working proper. I have tried clearing the cache and it just sits there calculating. Battery drain is also horrid, luckily I have 4 batteries so I can swap out and charge at the same time. It would be nice if there was information on an update to fix the bugs.

I'm on an HTC E8 and just downloaded the update. Everything is great EXCEPT: now, when I try to make a phone call, there's a huge delay or super long lag in connecting the call. In fact, the first couple times, I couldn't figure out what was going on, so I hit the "Call" button a few times b/c it would not respond, and that ended up with me calling the same number a couple times or so. It eventually connects, but takes anywhere from 10-30 seconds. Please help!

Updated to Marshmallow on my Galaxy Note 4 a month ago. I have been getting notifications constantly for no apparent reason (no text, no app, etc). Very annoying, especially @ night (occurs even though Do Not Disturb is on). Have booted to safe mode but still occurs so appears to be OS. I really don't want to have to do another backup & reset. Any ideas how to stop the annoying notification sounds? I have to turn to silent @ night!

  • I have a galaxy s5 and updated to marshmallow a few days ago and now every time I make a phone call or text an alarm icon appears on the notification status bar for about 30 seconds then disappears. I don't have any alarms set and I have wiped my system cache and cleared all my app's cache and I still have the problem. Everything else seems to work ok but the pesky alarm icon appears then disappears after a call or text which drives me crazy.

  • I have a galaxy 6 since the marshmallow update the phone portion of Bluetooth not work. All static I have tried everything can some places help with a suggestion. Bluetooth in car works fine with several different phones.

  • This guide it's just awesome!!! Thank you so much for your great job :)

  • I just bought an LG Leon Risio. First of all, there was no way I could have the phone recognised by my Mac Book Pro (it didn't appear on Finder or on Disk Utility) but could use Bluetooth data exchange between both devices with apparently no problems. I tried to copy some music into the phone using the SD slot on my Mac, but some tracks (about half of them) could not be played on the phone (message shows: sorry, this song could not be played). And also, internal storage began to clot very fast. Factory internal storage is 8 GB, System files take over 4.5 GB. Tried to move what I could to SD Card, still left me with about 700 mb for the rest of my phone's life (I have had it for two days!!!). Other thing, I tried to change downloads default folder (both for browser and Bluetooth) from internal to SD Card. Utterly impossible. The option (which should be on the Settings Menu under the Bluetooth tab) simply does not exist. My big Q, is this: if something is not broken, why try to fix it? It is supposed that upgrades are for the better. Earlier versions of Android where a pain already.

  • Hi since the marshmallow update my HTC m8s I'd overheating it's so hot it burns then a exclamation mark shows up in the battery symbol. Every charger I use even the HTC charger the phone then say use another charger your phone is not charging. Please can anyone help I still have a year left on the contract :-(

  • When I try to share an article on Android marshmallow using my Note 5 Ikea all of these choices that I don't want. People I may have sent one direct message to on Twitter now have a permanent residence on the first screen of my sharing option period how do I get rid of these people? This is ridiculous I don't want this option can I turn it off? Thank you for any help with this.

  • it was just working till yesterday but today when i turned on my mobile hotspot it says u need to turn off ur wifi first but when i see my wifi it was already turned off then i my mobile hotspot never connected

  • Since installing Marshmallow on my LG G3 D852, I have had an issue with my Micro SD Card. Each time that the phone battery dies, when I re-charge and turn my phone on again, I'm told that my SD card is corrupted and I have to reformat it...losing anything I had saved on there, unless I upload files to the computer first. PAIN IN THE ARSE.
I've tried formatting the SD Card on the computer. I've tried a factory reset on my phone. I've tried different SD cards with different brands. Nothing seems to fix it.
Any thoughts on a next step or a way to fix this? I haven't found many forums or help online.

  • I have a Huawei p8. Just upgraded to marshmallow. As soon as I did, certain applications stopped working on mobile data. I cannot access my Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat etc without wifi. Anyone has an idea what the issue could be or how to solve it

  • hope this helps. had the same problem of battery drain and not being able to put phone in power saving mode. i stumbled upon things that the 6.0 update cuts on and you have no idea, anyway, it seems that the update has the search for other devices running 24/7 and you have to go in and switch it off. since then power mode has been enabled and stays on and battery life is back

  • My PC was unable to find data to upload from my Samsung 5 phone. I followed their directions, my phone menu included "software update." I clicked on that & was able to update software on my PC and was able to upload the data from my phone. Hope this helps somebody else.

  • I have a galaxy tab a sm-t350 and just updated today. Now I have major problems trying to unlock my device, and sims 3 will no longer start up. I already contacted EA and they told me this was an issue only the android OS can fix through another update. Mad that I can't play the game I purchased, and mad that it now takes 8 minutes to just unlock my device. This update has essentially diminished the value of my tablet. Needs a fix.

  • i have ASUS-Z010D . Since i got android marshmallow 6.0.1 , i m facing some bugs like screen black out and freezing while having a voice message and voice call. i tried everything such as factory reset, wipe caches, and etc .but nothing good happen. what should i do?!!?!?!

    • I'm having the same problem. I updated to the marshmallow 6.0.1 and ever since then, almost every time I lock my phone my phone will either restart or it will remain black no matter how long I hold or tap the home/lock button. Sometimes, after about a minute it will wake back up like completely normal..

  • I have Galaxy Note 4 and since the update my wifi will connect to my network but has no internet. I tried ALL your connectivity fixes and NOTHING worked. I still have no internet. What else can I do? I should never have updated.

  • I have a LG L4. I did the upgrade and started to have random freezes. On this past Tuesay...in the morning...I turned my phone on...no problem...I was doing some things on it, so the charge had gone down...so I plugged it in. It made it's notification sound that the battery was full...so I unplugged it and tapped the screen...nothing. I tried turning the phone one with the button...taking out the battery, etc...nothing it was dead. I called tech support...we tried the reset process...everything didn't work. The tech said the computer in the phone was dead...now I have a new phone (replacement, but new) and the download is waiting for installlation....obviously I am hesitant...should I try the upgrade again?

Update place a random pattern lock and a random PIN lock on phone and all Carrier does is blame Me, Google and Samsung. This was on Note 4. Not Cool.

  • Galaxy S 4, Since upgrade to Marshmallow many of my contacts are now linked ? ? ?

  • Ever since I updated my S6 Active, I have had some issues. For example, when I do a Google search for something, the page changes to the main Yahoo homepage instead of going to the topic I searched. I would like to know if there is a fix for it? I'd there are too many issues with Android, I'm almost tempted to go to iPhone.

  • Hi
I js upgraded Marshmallow for my Galaxy A8 yesterday and my sim card has stopped detecting, needless to say people find me not reachable. Also, the screen goes blank immediately and instead of opening with my finger print it keeps aaking for password. I have tried several times to take out the sim, change the sim and everything else, but in vain. Can some1 plz help me😣

  • I have Lenovo A7000 phone and after updating a marshmallow update, touchpad stops working from right hand side. It's a marshmallow bug (16 MB), please don't update your phone. I lost my whole contacts, just because of this shitty bug update. Please suggest a proper solution and report it to Android.

I have the galaxy s5. from the moment I upgrated " direct call" stopped working . Direct call is under the menu motions and gestures. The one where you choose the contact you want to call , you can put phone to you ear and it calls them. my sensors are working perfect. i am sure it's a glitch...but how can I fix it? A guy did hard reset nothing changed. Help?

  • how can I switch the sd card back to normal and not have it incorporated with the phone memory ?

  • Iam unable to receive calls when set my sim in LTE mode I.e Iam unable to use 4g in marshmallow

  • My S5 will no longer charge on the wireless charger. It at first says, "Wireless charging detected. Charging Wirelessly" and then when the screen shuts itself off, apparently it shuts down the charging too. I have experienced all the other problems in this article - no storage, couldn't connect mobile data, battery drain, etc. and the cache file clear fixed most - but not the charging. This is a pain.

  • I'm having crazy, drive you nuts lag. Esp with my lock screen. I've got to wait 10+ seconds to try my pattern or it lags. Typing this is so. . Slow. When i open my camera, the screen goes black sometimes twice before I can use the camera. Omg. . . I'm about ready to burn my phone. And I notice it heat up 3 x as fast. And I've tried that, power button and down volume thing, it just stays in a continual loop of resetting then goes to safe mode.

  • Anyone having bugs in LG G3??????????

    • J3st3r Jun 16, 2016 Link to comment

I run an LG G3 and have noticed that my signal strength has turned to crap now. I only have a few bars where I used to have a full signal. I also get a message popping up that I don't currently have a signal when my bars have 2 lines. I dunno what's goin on here but this isn't what we pay for in my opinion.

  • I am also facing calling problem not able to dial or recieve calls. Phone is not reachable for hours. All this happened after Marshmallow 6.0.1 version update I have taken on my One plus one

  • You haven't mentioned the GPS issues with Marshmellow. After updating my S6 from Lollipop to Marshmellow I have encountered an ongoing GPS problem where it goes haywire every now and then. Tried everything including wiping the system cache in recovery mode. This does work for 2-3 days then I have to do it again - painfully frustrating.

  • Hi I have OnePlus Two moble an I am facing " Screen Overlay detected " issue, after upgrading the Marshmallow version. Please let me know how can I resolve this problem.

When I updated my Galaxy S5 my Group messaging stopped working. I have looked at all of the settings and they are ok. Anyone else have this problem or know the fix? Updated anything that I thought might help.

  • Having a few problems with Marshmallow on Oneplus Two phone. After updating I cannot figure out for the life of me how to shut off this priority notification thing. I want all calls and texts and what not, but under the "Priority only Allows" settings there doesn't seem to be an off option. Also on this screen under "Messages" and "Calls" No matter which option I choose nothing changes from the default selection "From starred contacts only" and the "Repeat Callers" option should be able to toggle on and off, but tapping it does nothing. The other problem I am having is the media volume of my phone has drastically been cut down. When playing games, for instance, I would have the media volume set at just before halfway so it would be loud enough to hear, whereas now I need it to almost max volume to hear it.

  • wifi was givimg problem ... i read your article , it was of great help ,,, thankx

    • What did you do? I tried safe mode and wiping all the data, but nothing changed. My nexus5 does not connect anymore to any WiFi network.

  • Hi, i just updated Marshmallow for my Oneplus 2. Everythings seems ok except, slider features doesnt seem work out. when i slide to priority, the phone switch to vibrate only. but when i slide to all notifications back, ringtone dosnt come back except vibrate. but i had to change it manually. the slider functions doesnt seems automated with the features. thanks. and sorry for the bad english.

  • Major Update leaves garbled garbage behind. Wipe cache from boot loader will take care of many problems. App cache or update for single App problems. But a Factory reset for a clean and fresh install followed by the bootloader wipe after all Apps and updates are reinstalled. Will correct 95%, you would have to wait for a update for the other 5%. Note 4 runs great, time invested for BACKUP, BACKUP BACKUP and fresh install, Priceless.........

  • Galaxy S5 ... updated +/- June 1st.
Among other problems I am still getting my head around, fast battery drain and slow battery charge, today and yesterday I have been unable to answer phone calls! It rings, but presents no option to answer, nor does it tell me who is calling until the ringing stops and the missed call notification appears. This is a HUGE problem, as I am in sales! Anyone have any thoughts on this?

    • I hope that this will help. Back up everything, write down all passwords. Power down phone - remove battery - hold power button for 60 seconds - next one hand, press and hold both volume up and home, then add, press and hold power on, feel vibration, let go, wait, DOS looking screen scroll down to wipe cache, press power button, confirm yes if asked, (you can stop here, press powerbutton to reboot when prompted, or I advise) scroll down to factory reset then reinstall boot and start fresh. My Note 4 has been fine since Friday. My wife and youngest daughter need to allow time for me to update their S5s.

      • Prior to seeing your response, I did a factory reset (differently than you described). Amazingly simple and Google pretty much sets you back up where you left off automatically. Oh, and it fixed the problem which could not be fixed by the Verizon Wireless solutions group otherwise.

      • Robert, what do mean 'reinstall bootloader'

      • Robert, what do you mean by 'reinstall boot'

  • Makes sense!

  • Ever since I upgraded my Galaxy S5 to Marshmallow (regretting it already) whenever I open an e-mail message it piterally take no less than 4 minutes for all of the content to load. Prior to this upgrade the content loaded as soon as I hit the button to load. What changed? I want the previous version back. Is it possible to roll back to the previous version?

  • I upgraded my Note 5 to Marshmallow. I only have one problem: Facebook app newsfeed does not update. Please help.

    • In most of these Android forums, they recommend you ditch the Facebook app altogether and either use the mobile web version (on the native internet browser, or Chrome), or download Facebook "wrapper" app like Hermit, Metal, or Swipe. Not as functional as the FB app, but they will help with battery drain issues and saves on mobile data.

      • They seem to have incorporated bloody facebook in to the system now- can only Disable, not get shot. I used to run fb in mobile web, saved nearly 400mb

      • Download Package Disable Pro if on Samsung. I really works. Not trace of the app on your screen and it is disabled at a lower level it seems.

  • When calling or receiving calls, the pictures that identify that person no longer work, this stinks and needs to be addressed, I have a galaxy s5 phone

I am in a crisis after upgrading to Marshmallow. All my Google apps: play store, Gmail, google+, etc are not working. When I try to open play store I get an error message: "there was a problem communicating with google servers. Try again later." Same with Gmail and all other apps (except for YouTube - I can watch some videos but can't sign in). It's been a week now and still I can't gain access.

This is what I have tried so far: cleared cache/data in play services&play store, remove accounts(I can't sign in), disable-enable play serv/store, granted permissions for google apps, downgraded to the factory versions of play services/store, factory restore (twice). All failed.

I basically have no whatsapp, twitter, Facebook, and all my other apps. No email as well. How do I fix this? Can I uninstall marshmallow?

    • Is background data on. If not turn it on. Turn off power saver.

Google play finally started working. After all different things I tried, what finally worked was nothing - literally do nothing. This issue fixed itself - but you can keep checking for software update's. I have mine configured to update automatically. Although I seem to be the only one who's suffered this glitch.

  • You should mention the consequences of clearing out your cache for ALL your apps. Oh, and you should also mention how to fix the external card renaming from a generic name to a Android 6 specific name. What? There is no solution? All my playlists are broken now? Thanks, Google! POS

  • Wow. What a POS. And these guys think they are the best developers on the planet? They changed the NAME OF THE EXTERNAL SD CARD SO NOW ALL THE PATHS TO THE GENERIC NAME ARE BROKEN IN PLAYLISTS! I REGRET upgrading to 6. Also, word completion is broken in Google on Chrome!!!!

Hi.i've just updated my galaxy s5 to marshmallow version and some apps dont work properly such as Hotspot shield or Shadowsocks.could you plz help!

  • Marshmallow update gave me weird issues with mobile data. For instance, Facebook messenger would work, but chrome refused to load pages. None of the fixes in the article seemed to work, but I managed to find a solution: changing the "network mode" (not sure what it's called in English) from LTE/WCDMA/GSM to something else and then back again. Fixed! It's under "more networks" and then "mobile data" or somesuch.

    • I had the same issue and couldn't get anything to work, until I tried your trick and that sorted it out :). Nice one!

  • I have an AT&T LG G3, it updated to Android Version 6.0 Security patch level 2016-03-01, Kernal Version 3.4.0 Software Version D85030K last week. Battery drain is rather high from what I am used to with it, have had it for about 2 years. Now I'm at 24% before noon. I tried the power off, hold power button and vol down to get to the menu to clear cache, but the phone boots to "SAFE MODE" not the menu... Suggestion?

  • I got the Android Marshmallow update a week ago on my Lenovo A7000 note device. After update device cannot be connected to PC.

    • This is the only solution I have found...It's a pain and has to be done every time I connect phone to the computer. Firstly you must enable Developer Options (If You tab the "About Phone" 7 times Developer Options Appears). Click on Developer Options and go down to Select USB configuration and click on it...MTP will engaged..Click on Charging and then click on MTP again and the device will appear on your P.C. It works for me...let me know how you get on...My phone is a Moto G 3rd Generation..

  • I can not setup S Voice planned events by voice in that Marshmallow. How can I roll back that Marshmallow on my Galaxy S6?

  • Hi. I have a note 4 with Sprint. I did a factory reset after updating to marshmallow bc it was causing so many lags ans issues with what was a perfectly run phone. My phone continues to randomly turn of and restart, huge lags in texting, missed texts, freezes in apps, and missed calls. Also, no font changes! Any suggestions to fix this diaster would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • i have a s6 edge plus sm g928g. i think the india version. unlocked. i updated to 6.01 and now my mobile data won't work. kinda weird as it made one call and then nothing. i did a factory reset and still the same. every now and then after removing and reinstalling the sim card it will make 1 call and then stop. no internet unless its on wifi. very frustrating. I've tried all the toggling and removing and nothing works,,,, help!!!!!!!

    • Check your apn settings. Try resetting to default. If not, get the settings for your provider and verify the settings are correct. On my note 3 the default settings were not correct. But I am using cm13 rom marsh 6.0

  • I am using lenovo a7000 with lollipop android 5.0. My phone shown a notification yesterday under system update that my device will be upgraded to marshmallow 6.0. I gladly accepted and clicked OK to download the software by using mobile air-tel 3g net. It took nearly 12 hours to upgrade without any problem and the download was successful and the device gave a choice to reboot and I clicked OK.

After reboot, all the applications in the internal memory were there. But when I saw my contact it was blank and likewise the call log. I made received calls today and they were not saved in the call log. I tried to freshly add names to contact but in vain. So many times switched off and restarted my device and also removed sims and battery, reinserted the same again with no use. All my old messages were shown and sometimes with blank screen.

Kindly advise me to fix the problem and set right the same. Factory reset will fix the problem to restore my contacts and call log? May we go back to lollipop?

    Thanks in advance..

  • further on: Using your card as ‘Portable Storage’

Media, pictures, movies already on the card will be visible in the device photo gallery and media apps. New content side loaded to the card will also be available and viewable in media apps on the device
Through the Motorola camera application settings, you can select the default storage for pictures and movies captured through the Motorola camera app. Third party camera might not offer this option.
Some third party applications will enable you to store their content on the ‘portable’ SD card, as in lollipop; but only if the application developer chose to do so (Google Play Music)
If you select a card as portable storage, you will NOT be able to move applications to the card, nor will play store automatically install applications to this card

  • i read an article that says that apps cannot be moved to an sd card in marshmallow: IMPORTANT FOR USERS UPGRADING FROM LOLLIPOP : if you received Android 6.0 as part of an OTA upgrade, any application which you had previously moved to (or installed on) the SD card with the legacy Motorola “Move apps to SD card” feature will still run from the card; but you will not be able to move new applications to that card. You will need to format your card as internal storage before being able to move new applications to the card.

  • Constantly losing connection since I updated my Galaxy S6, whether I am on wifi or 4G, can't listen to Pandora because it loses connection during every song, can't listen to games on MLB.tv because it disconnects and I need to close/reopen the app. Only receiving very rare updates from the ESPN app, losing connection on FB messenger. This update turned my phone into a piece of ****!

    • The exact same thing happens to me too. Unable to use any music apps as they lose connection or whatever happens. I'm lucky if I can make it through one whole song. FB messenger also the same and simple apps like the weather app. It tells me all the time that I don't have a connection.

      • The same with me ! Soundcloud is behaving very very very strange after updating to Android Mashmallow, as Spotify does. What I figured out is that when the phone is charging, musics apps play normally (like before update). While NOT CHARGING, musics apps takes 1 to 2 minutes of music and then suddenly stops. Quite interesting !

  • I have 6.01 on my S7 device and have a problem with some websites only on mobile data. Samsung tried to fix the problem and in the end said it was the websites fault. can someone give me workaround please?
The fault is... when visiting the (example site) mylotto.co.nz I can register and login but only once... sometimes the pages freeze as well. The only cure is to clear the internet cache and start again. yet when using another device connected to my device via hotspot, it has no problem. Samsung say this is not a device or marshmallow fault. I disagree.
When on wifi - everything works again.. I'm a bit disillusioned because I just came over from the dark apple side.

  • Ok. I've resigned myself to a factory data reset to fix my charging issue. Except my phone is dead and will not charge.

  • Since I updated my Verizon Note 5 to Marshmallow 6.0.1 this past Saturday, my battery drains 2.5 times faster than before. My battery used to last 2 days with normal usage, now I can almost watch it drain by the minute. It also keeps trying to join WiFi even after I turn it off! I have gone into WiFi settings and disabled all automatic WiFi connection settings and it still keeps coming back on randomly all day! BOTH are NOT acceptable! My phone has not been "rooted" nor tampered with in any way. It worked great before this upgrade. Getting ready to just reformat the damn thing..

  • Intalled Marshmallow 6.0.1 on my s6 and now it will not recognize my fast charger (factory). Also not receiving push notifications for gmail and outlook mail. It does not seem to be the settings. Anyone else having these problems?

  • Hey guys. I got the Android Marshmallow update a week ago on my Lenovo K3 note device.
From past 4 days I have been facing a bug. Every few minutes, a volume notification popup shows on screen with a 'thuck' sound. It's completely random and there is no particular scenario to reproduce this bug. Since it's displayed only for a second, I wasn't able to capture a snapshot.
Can you please help me with this?

  • On a android note 5 verizon here. Battery life is now super terrible. After marshmallow update. They just put no background services in battery save mode without an option to turn on like they did on my note 4. Now my kik dont work, when its on. I am also getting terrible battery now w it on either way. I love when stuff that was working gets broke in updates. Give me an option to turn on background data in power save and black and white. Gonna run antutu benchmark in power save mode to see if they still have cpu even throttled back at all.

I have a Moto G 2nd Gen - Tried everything to fix inability to get mobile data.
After 3 days of trying to fix only thing that works is to enable hot spot which is an absolute pain.
Will a fix be sent out??

  • I have a 2nd gen Moto g. After the recent Marshmallow update the system puts all app updates into the internal memory. This was the case before, but now I cannot move them into the 32 GB SD card. The internal memory, about 5gb, has now filled and I can't update any more. Help please!

    • You can select your memory card to be adopted as part of the internal memory storage, I now have a phone that is actually able to update the apps I have installed on it! Although I'm finding it only likes to charge to 50% for some reason, you had anything like this happen?

  • Apparently the update somehow fried my sd card on my HTC one m8. And my boom sound icon will randomly appear in the notification bar even when I have all apps closed. May be a coincidence in the SD card... But the phone doesn't recognize it's installed. Moved to an external reader and same thing. Photos of my kids and all my music... gone...

Upgraded the HTC One M8 to Marshmallow over the weekend and can now no longer connect to my home wifi network. It can connect to other networks. My tablet and laptop can still connect to the home network. I've been on tech support for ATT, Verizon, and HTC for several hours now over the last couple of days. I've toggled wifi on and off, cleared caches, rebooted in safe mode, and finally reset the factory settings all with zero success. Any advise would be appreciated. Just about ready to throw this phone out the window and get a Samsung.

I just got off the phone with Verizon tech support. I had the same issue and they were able to identify a workaround. Turn off Bluetooth. Not optimal for me since I use it often in the house, but that worked immediately for me.

Bluetooth has been off the whole time. Verizon seems to think the problem is with my wifi router not being up to date. I might try that next and perhaps it is time to replace it.

I just upgraded my Moto G to Marshmallow. I thought that the "internal memory storage on SD card" feature would finally solve the stupid problem of running out of memory (why does this problem *even exist*?!? a linux kernel and all its applications can be made to run on any sort of memory media - why does Android have to be so picky about memory?). But no. Much to my surprise a good 90% of the applications I have on my phone cannot be moved to the SD card - and most of them are not critical apps, they are just flight booking, banking, shopping, mail, photos, the usual stupid things that is.

Why can't everything be moved to the SD card? Am I doing something wrong? Everything else is mostly fine, this one is a royal PITA.

P.S. Yes I installed AppMgr III but it's just more of the same: it says apps can't be moved. And I don't have the time and will to root my phone, thank you.

HTC One (M8) - T-Mobile - After upgrading to Marshmallow I found wi-fi would disconnect after a few seconds. The connect would be made as I would get mail etc downloaded. I tried all suggestions here, still the same.

I booted into safe-mode (instructions found in this article) and found my wi-fi was stable. So it must be an app causing the issue. While in safe mode I updated all my apps, rebooted and all is well.

  • Hello, I updated my Android one device to the marshmallow OS, have been having issues with it, 1. It doesn't show my phone contacts names, 2. I can't assess my stored files on the internal memory, and it shows that the space is being used. Please how do I fix this?

I did the update yesterday on my htc one m8 now suddenly all the music I have on my removeable sd card is shown as unknown artist/album (I even tried moving one song from card to phone storage, when the song was on phone storage artist and album were there again) has anyone an idea why this is and how I could fix it?

Getting the same problem. You found a solution yet fab jek? Also using One M8 btw. Tried different apps. Still no Unknown Artist and unknown Album :(

    • fixed it on my m8.

      Shutdown the phone remove sd,
      restart phone,
      clear app cache,
      shutdown again and
      reinsert card.

Should all sort it's self out as it was before the update to marshmallow.

  • Hey Guys! After I've done the update on my Moto G3 it won't turn on. It seems to be stuck in a power cycle and it won't turn on anymore. I can't even do a factory reset because it goes back to the power cycle. Does anyone know what I could do? Thanks in advance!

  • Wi-Fi battery drain issue got fixed by just resetting the network settings on my moto G 3rd gen. Thank u Androidpit :)

I have an LG G4 DUAL smart phone. After installing successfully Marshmallow I've noticed that I'm not able to access Settings > More > Mobile Networks. Once I tap on the option Mobile Networks I'm having this error message: "Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped". Before the update I was able to access this setting. Does this happened to someone else? I have done several things as suggested here but none of the worked. Can anyone help please?

  • Hi, since the automatic update to Marshmallow I have issues with my excel spreadsheets stored in Dropbox, they do not open correctly on my Android Samsung 4 phone.
The columns do not open to the correct widths so the information in the columns partially merge.

They work well from Dropbox on my desktop and laptop.
Please help to sort out this problem
    Farrel

  • Nice article though. But I haven't experienced yet with marshmallow. My device still at the lollipop 5.1. After reading this article, I thought that Lollipop would be better than this. What I felt here is that New OS from Android is not so effective I'd imagine. However let me have that OS in my device after I will come back this article to give comments about what will I experienced with Marshmallow. Waiting for that one.

Just upated my LG G4 to Marshmallow - and now struggling with severe WLAN connectivity probs. I tried everything (reset network connections, swithc on/off etc. - only back to factory reset not yet). Anyone here who face the same - and solved it?

    • Same here... My connection used to be instantaneous as I pulled into my driveway. Now, there's a huge delay.. Also, noticed that the battery seems to be draining faster - but I'm willing to wait and see what happens after about a week. From my understanding battery optimization isn't reached until after your phone monitors your usage habits.

    • Just in case anyone is interested: I solved it with complete reset to factory settings (run full backup before!!!) - afterwards it worked fine. WLAN connectivity as usual, battery consumption as well. Only bad thing is, that network/bluetooth connections need to be setup from the scratch (and some other settings e.g. in mail programs)... so...could be worse at the end.

  • How do I tether my Nexus 5 with Marshmallow to download my photos? My tethering toggle is grayed out.

Anybody here can tell me how to revert back to lollipop from marshmalow with out taking any risks????

    • I had to do so with my Nexus 5 because even factory reset did not solve several anoying problems (no wifi reconnection in sleep mode, missed notifications, GPS on and off during navigation ...).
Nexus root toolkit (wugfresh) worked nicely. But only for Nexus devices and a little risk is remaining.

  • I have updated my nexus 5 to 6.0.1 . I have 3g data problem with 6.0.0 and 6.0.1 . How can i fix it? Need help

  • Ever since I've updated to marshmallow none of my games or apps work properly. If I click on a game or Facebook it freezes and or force closes. This is very frustrating. Everything worked fine before the update. Is there any way for a fix without going back to lollipop, or doing a factory reset?

  • My downloaded applications are not supported after upgrading to marshmallow

  • Marshmallow was working fine for me until i installed an update today after which my screen has been toggling like crazy. Tried all the tips advised but there seems to be no hope. Kindly advise regarding the solution. I use a nexus 5.

  • I've had a massively improved battery life since upgrading to marshmallow. I've noticed playing music via Bluetooth a bit buggy sometimes but I'm guessing that's probably more to do with google play music needing an extra update rather than the OS itself.
Massive improvements compared to KitKat for me. I'm on the N6 from last year not the new one.

  • Who is not excited about the coming of Android 6.0 Marshmallows? It seems that almost everyone of the Android users are can't wait and it's good to know such technique of troubleshooting.
