Will your smartphone or tablet get the Android update to Android 6 Marshmallow? Despite Android 7 Nougat having  been officially released in mid 2016, smartphone manufacturers are still pushing out Android Marshmallow updates. We've created a helpful overview for the most popular and most used Android devices to let you know if and when your smartphone will get the next Android update.

Device overview

Asus Huawei Oppo
Blackberry Lenovo Samsung
Google LG Sony
Honor Motorola Xiaomi
HTC OnePlus

Asus

Asus had a trend over the past year that a large portion of their devices which were running on Android Kitkat (and lower) did not receive an update to Android Lollipop. It seems like that trend continues, as quite a few those lucky devices that received the Android Lollipop or were released with them, won't be getting the Android Marshmallow update.

While it seems like Asus won't be rolling out any more Android Marshmallow updates any time soon  - with Android Nougat being fully released and Android O(reo) having been released as a developer preview - there is still hope for some Asus devices.

Blackberry

Blackberry launched its first Android smartphone, the Blackberry Priv, in November 2015. It was a noticeable departure from its Blackberry OS and was seen by many as a last attempt to claw back some of its lost market share. Following the up on the positive reception, Blackberry decided to launch the Blackberry DTEK 50 - a modified and rebranded version of the Alcatel Idol 4 in July 2016. While the hardware received positive reviews, the software was criticized for containing redundant blackberry security features which were already included in the Android OS. Blackberry decided to throw another Android based device on the market in October 2016, the Blackberry DTEK 60, this time including a fingerprint scanner on the back. Both the Blackberry DTEK 50 and the DTEK 60 were launched with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, though there is no word of any updates in the near future.

Google

The entire Nexus family received the Lollipop update up to Android 5.1.1, and all bar the Nexus 4, 7 (2012) and 10 have now progressed onto Android 6.0 Marshmallow and Android 7.0 Nougat. Following the unofficial tradition, with the release of Android Marshmallow, Google launched two new Android Flagships. In collaboration with Huawei, Google unveiled the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P in September 2015.

One of the perks of Nexus phones is that you can download factory images for the latest, as well as earlier, Android versions from the official Google Developers' site.

Just click the link above, then scroll down until you find your Nexus device and download the version you want. Factory images generally appear before OTA (over the air) updates – but not always – so if you're feeling impatient you can download the latest Android version manually.

Honor

Huawei Honor, or simply Honor, appeared on the market as a sub-brand of the Chinese smartphone company Huawei. While initially the Honor series was designed, built and marketed by Huawei, Honor has been carving out its own niche in the Android smartphone market. Today, Honor can be seen as its own distinct brand and has managed to gather a large following thanks to its unique smartphones.

HTC

Thanks to the official HTC Twitter account, we received a confirmed list of HTC devices which were planned to receive Android Marshmallow. Though the Android 6.0 update was scheduled to roll out at the end of 2015 for the HTC One M9 and HTC One M8, the fine print notes that not all carriers would be able to deliver it.

In January 2016, HTC One M9 owners in Canada began seeing Marshmallow roll out.  Elsewhere, HTC One M8 owners on Sprint in the US also began receiving the update, while T-Mobile has scheduled the release for January 25 2016. In mid-March 2016, HTC began rolling Marshmallow out to the HTC One E8 and M8 EYE.

HTC Vice President of Product Management Mo Versi confirmed via Twitter that the HTC One M8 GPE will receive Android Marshmallow sometime in October 2016. GPE (Google Play Edition) phones were originally designed to offer a pure Android experience on non-Nexus devices, and were second in line only to Nexus phones when it came to Android updates, but they've been dying out lately. HTC given its Google Play Edition device a little breath of life with this Android update.  HTC also confirmed that the HTC One M7 would not receive Marshmallow because it is now more than two years old and outside of the update window.

Huawei

On October 28 2016, it was reported that Marshmallow beta testing would begin on the Honor 7  by mid to end November 2016.

A tweet from the Indian Honor Twitter page confirmed that Honor customers would begin receiving the latest Android update in February 2017. It lists the Honor 4c, 4x, 6, 6 Plus and 7 as the devices set to receive the new OS.

A tweet from Honor's US Twitter account suggests that Android 6.0 Marshmallow is on its way to the Honor 5X very soon but it failed to give any specific information. Keep your eyes peeled.

Huawei has also published a list of devices that are set to get Marshmallow. The rollout started in November 2016, but lasted into 2017.

At the time of the Android Lollipop release, Lenovo wasn't the biggest or most well known Android OEM in the US market. Nevertheless, Lenovo had shipped out quite a handful of devices for the US and international markets. While a large bulk of these devices received an update to Android Lollipop, the same cant be said about Android Marshmallow. LG

After Google, LG was the first company to update one of its devices to Marshmallow. LG G4 users in Poland began receiving the update in October 2016, but there were some technical difficulties and the test was halted. In late November, however, users across Europe began reporting that the Android Marshmallow update was beginning to arrive on their devices. You can check if your device is part of the rollout using LG Bridge, the company's PC sync software.

In November 2016, LG made the Marshmallow update available to LG G4 owners in Korea, making the company's home nation the second to receive the update. The software was uploaded to LG's website, which enabled customers to apply the update via their computers.

T-Mobile listed the LG G3, LG G4 and LG G Stylo among those devices set to receive Android Marshmallow in the first wave of updates.

Motorola had also revealed its current list of Motorola phones that are in line for the Android Marshmallow update.

In early December 2016, Motorola added the Moto E (2015) to its list of devices set to receive Marshmallow, although only selected regions would receive the update. The US was excluded from the list. Find out more information from Motorola.

OnePlus

OnePlus CEO Carl Pei unveiled the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update plans for the OnePlus One, OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X in November 2015 in the official OnePlus forum. According to the post, the OnePlus one should receive the marshmallow update (in the form of the Cyanogen OS 13) in the first quarter of 2016. Only after that update, will Oxygen OS be adapted for Android Marshmallow.

A public beta of Oxygen OS 3.0 (which is based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow) has been available for the OnePlus 2 since the end of March, 2016.  OnePlus does not call this pre-release a beta, but community build instead. Note that this is not a final version and the update may contain bugs and errors. OnePlus wants to use this public test to find the last serious bugs in cooperation with the users of OnePlus 2, in order to eliminate them as quickly as possible. If you want to participate in this test, you can download Community Build on the OnePlus website and flash them on your OnePlus 2.

Samsung

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge began receiving Marshmallow on February 15, 2016. The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge began getting minor updates starting April 11, 2016. These brought touch features for the screen and adjustments to the camera settings. These updates will only come to certain regions.

The Galaxy Note 5 Android Marshmallow update began rolling out on March 24, 2016 for Sprint customers. The completion of the rollout will conclude on April 8. Verizon and AT&T customers already started seeing this update at the beginning of March. This came later than the original rumors discussed below, which gave us a date of February 2016. The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) saw the roll out begin in June 2016 and is, by now, complete.

Sony

Sony announced on March 7, 2016 that the roll out of Marshmallow has begun for the Xperia Z5 series, the Z4 Tablet and the Z3+. The announcement was made via Sony's Xperia News Twitter page. The rollout was staggered, with different locations receiving the update at different times. Sony had also released an official list of devices which were set to receive the Android Marshmallow updates.

The Xperia Z5 Marshmallow update did include some features like Stamina Mode, which was previously rumored to be on the update and will instead be in a later update. Some interesting features were added, like a podcast widget and camera mode switching through swiping.  In mid-July 2016, Sony began updating the Xperia M5 and M4 Aqua to Marshmallow.

Xiaomi

Xiaomi confirmed that Marshmallow was on its way to the Mi 4 and Mi Note. A full release was proceeded by a beta program, which determined how promptly the final software update was rolled out.

There's no word on whether Marshmallow will be heading to any of Xiaomi's other devices, but at the very least you can expect to see the update come to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, Redmi 2, Redmi 2 Prime and Mi 4i at some point in the future.

Everyone who is experiencing issues with the latest updates should do a factory reset, this should be done after every major update to clear the system cache from any old system files, it also ensures that the apps (including system apps) update to there optimum versions.

Just received the 6.0 Marshmallow update on my excellent Samsung Galaxy S5. Though the changes are fairly minimal. It does seem to be a little faster/slicker. Though it doesn't bring the same changes as my Tab S2. I presume that because Samsung wants me to upgrade my device, rather than providing a full update. With the 6.0 update my S5 will be running for a few more years

    Peace 🖖

I have a note 4 after the update I found d the graphic nice and beautiful. BUT I see a couple bug/error on my device performance here are those.

1.the buttons on the bottom like the home and back arrow light are flashing while I slide my fingers up or down while browsing.

2.While texting on my regular message app the text is really slow also when I send the msg is even worst it is 3 times slower it is a drastic down fall it's is so bad I don't want to text anymore MUST BE FIXED ASAP.

    3. Over all... my phone speed has decreased immensely and this must be fixed urgently or simply I will have to go back the to the precious update.

I really like the new soundsite and the app looks but if affects the performance of my note 4 I don't want it.

I have two BLU phones and they both came with marshmallow installed, so I put a 64g sd card in both and SUPER I now have 68g's of internal storage on both phones, so I read somewhere that marshmallow is comming for Samsung Galaxy Tab A, GREAT, I have one, it has 16g's of internal storage and I have a 32g sd card in it. I was able to put about 1/3 of an app and almost all the data on my sd card, so along comes the PUSH from Samsung for marshmallow, with NO big warnings at the very beginning of the push and after all I already have it on two phones and it works great. WHAT NOBODY IS TELLING ANYBODY IS THAT MARSHMALLOW DOES NOT WORK THE SAME ON A TABLET AS IT DOES ON A PHONE, EVEN THOUGH EVERY OTHER PAST "OS" WAS THE SAME ON A TABLET AS IT WAS ON A PHONE. YOU CAN NOT PUT ANYTHING EXCEPT MEDIA ON A SD CARD IN A TABLET AND YOU CAN NOT GO BACK TO KIT KAT, SO MY TABLET IS NOW ONLY HALF AS GOOD AS IT WAS WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT IT. i FIND THIS TO BE EXTREMELY SLEAZY ON SAMSUNG'S BEHALF, NOT MUCH DIFFERENCE THEN MICROSOFT PUSHING WINDOWS AND NOT TELLING ANYONE THAT THERE WAS NO LONGER A MEDIA CENTER., AND I JUST GOT'S TO SAY "I'M PISSED"!!!!!!! Samsung decided not to include the feature that adopts SD card as internal storage - though I have a Samsung Tab S2 running 6.0 and I am able to successfully move apps to the SD card, it's the same system as before (5.0).

My battery dies quicker, my phone randomly reboots, I don't get texts, I don't get alerts even though 5 minutes before I was getting them and many other issues! I literally have to reboot my phone to get some things to start working again! They work for 30 minutes, then they don't! WORST UPDATE EVER! PLEASE FIX!!!!!!!! I use this for my business and unless you are going to reimburse me for lost clients and wages, it needs to be fixed asap! Hate it! Everyone I've spoken to that did the update has the same complaints! One even lost everything due to the update!

I always do a factory reset after a big update like that. It gets rid of the remnants of the old OS. You just have to make sure you back everything up and go into settings and make sure that ur phone is set up to automatically update, and to backup and restore ur Google account! :)

I don't expect an update to Android OS N -- Google hasn't given this OS an official name -- but I'm curious to see how Google will encourage device manufacturers to swiftly offer an update (as well as get Network service providers to cut the bullshit) ....

Although marshmallow for Verizon Samsung Galaxy S6 edge is great for doze and saves a ton of battery, finding alot of other issues that is messing up my phone. Smart stay doesn't seem to work as well anymore, the most annoying thing is using fingerprint security. Before, just switch back and forth from fingerprints to nothing, now when change from fingerprints it asks if you want to remove fingerprints totally (why the hell would you want to do this?) or you have to put in a passcode twice which is super annoying. Also, I just noticed if take a pic, in gallery I go in to edit and it DOES NOT SAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even though I click on apply and save, just keeps going back to original pic. WORST OS UPDATE EVER!!! When is the next one coming to hopefully fix all this nonsense? I also noticed my phone is more glitchy when it never was before.

Everything stops all the time even when I open the settings/msg or try to make calls. And not saying anything about apps... I contacted Samsung. They did the back up on the phone and a factory reset. It didn't solve the problem. There is no apps on the phone. Only reset contacts and msgs. Nothing else. The phone still not good. It looks like if the problem is with the new update. (I haven't had this problem before updated) I'm thinking update for an older version. Would it be a good idea? Or any other useful idea?

Can you guys reach out to T-Mobile and see if the Samsung Tab S 10.5 T807T will get Marshmallow? I reached out to T-Mobile Support, they either didn't know or wern't saying to a PAYING CUSTOMER. I'm hoping to take advantage of adoptable storage! One more thing, we as consumers should be disclosed true or estimated actual storage. I have a little more than 8gb left from a 16gb tablet. I keep running out of space!

MY son's stylo has not yet received the update notice for Marshmallow. I am still waiting for the S6 edge update from Samsung. Why is that a second gen phone has to wait for the update when phones that are older are getting it already. Does not make any sense. Wtf is Samsung doing anyway?

Not sure if its of any use to anyone if your on O2 and the phone is locked to O2 but picked this up off their forums in case no one has seen it yet it came off the UK website so am assuming it's as obviously stated, for the UK:

    Hello Android users,

With Marshmallow now officially out in the wild in the form of new hardware (see the Nexus 5X and soon-to-be-launched Nexus 6P), official software updates will start pushing out to existing handsets in the coming months. Not every Android handset will see an upgrade for Marshmallow (more on that later...) but we'll keep you posted on this along the way.

NOTE: If you have an unlocked/SIM free handset not purchased via O2 directly, you will not be on the 'O2 update channel' and so your experience will be different. Due to your update coming direct from the vendor, due to various factors, you may see the update arrive sooner or later than O2 customers - this varies from handset to handset, update to update.

    Google
With Nexus devices being close to Googles heart, these are usually the first to be updated. The following devices are already receiving updates to Android Marshmallow:
    - Nexus 5
    - Nexus 6
    - Nexus 7
    - Nexus 9

Sony released a statement via their blog here

    SONY UPDATE @ 18th February
We're hoping to receive updates for the Z5, Z3+ and Z4 Tablet before end of the month to begin testing. If all goes well, we hope to see the update released in the coming weeks.

    HTC
HTC recently tweeted that they'd be updating the following devices to Marshmallow:
    - HTC One M9 & M8 (beginning end of 2015)
    - HTC One M9+, E9+, E9, ME, E8, M8 EYE
    - Butterfly 3
    - Desire 826, 820, 816

    HTC UPDATE @ 20th January
    - Marshmallow is now being rolled out to the HTC One M8

    HTC UPDATE @ 26th January
    - Marshmallow now rolling out to HTC One M9's

    HTC UPDATE @ 17th February
    - Marshmallow 6.0.1 soon rolling out to HTC A9 (see here for more info)

    Motorola
Motorola have announced that they will update the following devices to Marshmallow:
    - 2015 Moto X Pure Edition (3rd gen)
    - 2015 Moto X Style (3rd gen)
    - 2015 Moto X Play
    - 2015 Moto G (3rd gen)
    - 2014 Moto X Pure Edition in the US (2nd gen)
    - 2014 Moto X in Latin America, Europe and Asia2 (2nd gen)
    - 2014 Moto G and Moto G with 4G LTE2 (2nd gen)
    - DROID Turbo
    - 2014 Moto MAXX
    - 2014 Moto Turbo
    - Nexus 6

Note: Many of the devices above were not sold by O2 or within the UK market. If you have such devices, you should receive your update directly from Motorola - O2 will not receive these for testing/approval/release (eg, devices like the Turbo, MAXX, X Pure etc)

    LG UPDATE @ 20th January
    - We're awaiting the software from LG for the G4 and will begin testing once we have it - no ETA currently available.
    - The G3 update should follow shortly after the G4 has been updated

    LG UPDATE @ 12th February
    - We approved the G4 update a few days ago and it should be in LG's systems now. Eyes peeled over the coming days as it's likely to become available to you any day now.

    Others
At present we don't currently have any confirmed roadmaps from other vendors but we will work with them and will update this as and when more confirmations arrive.

    SAMSUNG UPDATE @ 10th February
    - We're currently testing marshmallow on the S6. No further info or ETA yet but we'll let you know more over the coming days/weeks.

Only way to revert back to a previous version is (in motherboard terms) to get hold of a the previous version stock ROM image and re-flash the device.
Best to head over to the android dev forum & do a search there for your device, whether anyone has the stock image & read up on a "how to" for re-flashing your device.

For when is the update expected for LG G3S? Lollipop software is taking up 5.14Gb of internal memory of my phone. That is ridiculous. I have an external storage card where i keep all my photos, music, video and app's. Every time i try to move Facebook app to the sd card phone crashes.
    Only have 2Gb of app's.
Bugs: keyboard takes to long to appear. Most of the time vanishes while typing.
    Flashlight responds on own will.
Opening of any webpage takes to long to appear.
    Music stops playing.
And again that ridiculous amount of consumption of internal storage...5,14 Gigabits of lollipop software... Really!!!!!
It's taking Android to long to release the update.

Clear app cache. If you have facebook, get it off. It uses tons of ram even when not open. I use Tinfoil for Facebook. Tiny app, doesn't require that godawful messenger app.

Greenify is a good one, kills any apps that you've downloaded and don't want running all the time, e.g. snapchat or OneDrive.

Any pre-loaded apps, uninstall all updates then install the latest ones, if you need that app. I've recovered about 6GB of space doing that.

I use the M9, 32GB with 64GB SD card, for both business and gaming, and have all sorts of oddities and funky things installed that run autonomously to help keep my life organized and streamlined.
Good luck, tell me how it turns out :)

After upgradation of Marshmallow 6.0 on Moto X Play following problems have occur till now :

1> Camera Shutter Sound occur suddenly which was not found on Lollipop 5.1.1.
2> Battery seems to be drain faster than previous version OS Lollipop 5.1.1
3> Email icon remove automatically and all mails come under GMail icon.
4> If SD card is treated as I internal memory card to increase space, through this I cannot copay songs movie or data to its internal storage SD card from my Laptop. Some errors are occur.

If Camera shutter sound is legal for one or two countries, then it is not mandatory for rest of the countries in the world. Shutter sound is really annoying specially if it is used within office and disturbing to other colleague in the office. So there must be on/off button in Camera Shutter.

Therefore, I would request to Google kindly develop patch file for Marshmallow 6.0 and try to release within next 1 month to resolve above issues specially Moto X Play handset.

It depends of that which phone you have. On my Nexus5 I'v got update on Marchmsllow in november last year. Just look and follow news on Android Pit portal; there was a few times dates of all phones which will ger update on Marchmallow and when it will.

It'd just be nice to get some actual dates for the release since we're in Q1 already. Instead of it just being a waiting game. I know it's not Android Pit's fault, but still. This is the same info we've been hearing for a while now.

    • 2
M Kind Dec 24, 2015 Link to comment

Upgrade to Marshmallow? Sorry, don't hold your breath. Do you recall the rumors (since last year) that the ZTE ZMAX would receive a lollipop upgrade?? Well, it was just that -- rumors. Basically, ZTE has now focused on the newer model "ZTE ZMax 2" and other higher end phones *cough* AXON *cough* (not sold by MetroPCS at this time). The company is not moving backwards by giving ZMAX owners a break on an major upgrade. So, to be blunt, THEY DON'T CARE about the mid budget ZMAX.

Anyway, I would suggest to either root your phone (and if that's not possible from certain updates to block rooting capabilities), look into upgrading your phone in the future.

Oh, and by the way... The last excuse ZTE gave, "It's the responsibility of the phone carrier to initiate an android upgrade". So you know hope is pretty much gone for what we all been waiting for.

I miss the HTC M8s in your overview.

There is an indication for all HTC phones here. By clicking on one, the if and when appears on the right. It is not very precise though.
    www.htc.com/nl/go/htc-software-updates/

Surprisingly I did not find an English version of this.

For the M8s is stated that is will get Marshmallow. But I have no clue when. Will that be in another month, or 3, or 6? And will I get Sense 7?

Even for the M9 it is just stated that it is in phase 3 of the process. That is not really comforting as the process consists of 8 to 12 phases.

Only Verizon customers got the 5.1.1 update. If you're not on Verizon, you will skip 5.1.1 and go straight to Marshmallow. No news on when Marshmallow will arrive, though. Shouldn't be too much longer.
