    Evernote is my most critical Android app. I'm not a fan of how they push their paid programs so hard in the new release. Nor the default home page you can't tweak without their current paid memberships. I do have a paid membership, but it's grandrathered from over a decade ago and gets none of the new "features". Still, the app is a great tool.

    As to ereader, I think you succumbed to the walled garden style of thinking. The best e-readers are the independent tools like FBReader and Librera. More format support, better controls, less snooping. Use Calibre on your desktop/notebook with the appropriate plugin from ApprenticeAlf and free your reading experience and book supply chain.

    I am a simple man. I see McAfee on a "best apps" list and I cringe. Avast is good, probably the best aside from Kaspersky; good for those who believe politicians enough to distrust Kaspersky. I'd also highly recommend Malwarebytes to everyone, as a secondary protection.

    There are other underwhelming picks that I'd love to argue, but seriously, McAfee? "Best Apps"? Eww.

    Kustom Live Wallpaper, or KLWP might be the single most amazing app for customizing your phone ever created. There is a learning curve but if you like to theme your phone there is no question this is the way to go.

    For music streaming, Audials is fantastic!
    Available for many platforms, but free, no ads Android app in playstore is great. Over one hundred thousand stations, & podcasts. Best feature, recording while listening or scheduled recording in the background. Only broadcast stations have the usual ads, but I rarely hear any on the streams I choose.

    Updated: Lot of good ones here, some will be contentious. I dropped Open Camera and adopted Snap Camera HDR (Marginz) as default app because it includes customizable GUI with presets, and JPEG controls for wavelet denoise, along and sliders for sharpening, saturation and contrast. I keep comfortable, familiar Camera FV-5 for lossless PNG format. Snap and Bacon Camera actually force my Camera1 API phone to make good lossless DNGs. The main keyboard feature I want is a simple extra row of numbers across the top instead of long press or a second board - several good ones have it.

    In Canada the only reliable weather source is Environment Canada, and Fish & Whistle's nicely made free Canada Weather is the only app to link to it. Users with public library cards should see what apps the library provides free - I use Hoopla - 9 downloads/month no charge - surprised at the number of movies I like (offers TV, music and comics as well). Several ereading apps (OverDrive, RBDigital, PressReader), Naxos Jazz and Music streaming, etc. all of which are free with a library number, subscription charges without. You guys might want to do a report on free public library apps for your readers.

    Nitro Boost and Cleaner
    CCleaner

    Please advise how we can get our Lock Screen App reviewed.
    It allows users to unlock their Android smartphone with their Instagram photos as a memorable and secure way of protecting their phone.
    The clever bit is the security where the keypad uses the same photos but they are in a different order each time the user logs in. This turns the same password sequence into a one-time password for every login.
    It can be downloaded from Google's Play Store by searching 'IconLogin' or from our website www.iconlogin.com
    Thanks for any advice.

    There are a number of apps you've missed like Pi music player it has bass boost an EQ and an built in ring tone maker that works quite well. Far and away the best launcher is Apex. I've tried just about all of them and Apex is the best IMHO. ES Global removed the adds. I like ES file explorers functionality and the look of the classic theme (which is not available in the pro version sadly). The biggest plus for me is it handles the handoff of streaming video over my LAN from a windows share to the VLC app seamlessly. Sorry it's not getting uninstalled on my phone. If you like live wallpaper Earth-Moon pro is awesome. Also if you like to lock apps away from prying eyes Smart Applock pro is the best there is. I like the feature where it takes the intruders picture when they can't guess your passcode/pattern. Rotation Control by CrapeMyrtle is a very good rotation control program that places it's control mechanism in your notification drop down. Also has app rotation protection that won't let apps rotate the screen. The only app missing on this list is a good alternative to the stock phone app. All the ones I have tried are lacking.

      How often do you think you'll catch someone trying to access the locked apps? Don't you use a lock screen password? Do you often have strangers (or anyone else you might know) accessing your device?

      These apps can be useful to alleviate paranoia but in reality the majority of users should have no need to waste storage and resources by installing these types of apps.

This app will give you all the best websites in the world, grouped by country or categories. It's not a search engine but a search device (you have less control but it just works great and does what you need for the most part). Not only will you find your information but you will find many more exciting stuff to learn or do online. And it's free!

So something I read six weeks ago and want to come back to in pocket... may have disappeared! The webpage amended, updated or deleted, could mean pocket content Lost! Now I use Telegram or Podio for maintaining constancy.

    Hulu? I thought I heard something about them sharing private information of it's users.
    Es File Explorer. Even though I've been using it for years I can't say I'm too happy with the developer. They crippled their app not too long ago so users would buy the pro version. What they should have done was offer more features for the pro version. The pro version is well worth $4.
    For cloud storage app I use Es File Explorer and whatever cloud service I want.
    Next Lock Screen, according to the Play Store reviews, latest update is not good.

    I didn't see a category for Best Deals App, which helps people to find the best deals. There are many daily deals apps or coupon apps, but here is a very different one: DealsWatchDog. (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dealswatchdog.dealswatchdog&hl=en) The idea is that you enter what product you want to buy and the current market price for the product, the app will monitor many popular market places 24x7 for the product. If it noticed a better price than the price entered, it will notify the user for the deal. Think about the particular lawn mower you wanted to buy but in no hurry so you decided to wait until there was a sale...

    Disclaimer: I'm the developer of this new Android app.

    Thanks for this list!! I have been traveling since 2002 and that time technology was not so advanced and we didn't have mobile applications to help while traveling and now there are so many applications that i sometimes get lost in the crowd searching for which are the best. Your list is a good consolidation of best apps!!

    From past 2 years I have been using a travel diary called Roadlike. Roadlike is an app that lets me document my day to day moments. It is simple & innovative diary & works in OFFLINE MODE. It is one of my favorite app because it allows me to capture my daily moments & check in at places even in offline with exact locations tagged to it, few photos or a short video and small memory notes.

    Also, it does this well when I am in offline mode (due to bad internet connection while travelling to remote areas or traveling internationally).

    Link to their website is - www.roadlike.com

    They are available on iOS - itunes.apple.com/us/app/roadlike-capture-moments-locations/id916457325?ls=1&mt=8 and

    Android platform - play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.roadlike.app.

    Also, following are my top 6 good travel apps which i use:

    Expensify for managing expense;
    Roadlike for capturing travel moments with check ins, capturing locations, photos & videos;
    PackPoint for not missing out on any item to pack before traveling;
    TripAdvisor for recommendations of hotels & restaurants;
    Expedia for booking travels; and
    Pocket for reading while traveling - works in offline.

    It seems like just yesterday that Instagram was adding video. Then direct messaging. And now the image sharing service that made us all fall in love with filters brings enhanced photo editing features that let it compete with the likes of Snapseed. What hasn't changed is the passionate userbase sharing incredible photos from around the world.

    Although my favorite hands down is still (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.system.app.uninstaller) its basically a way for you to uninstall apps from android. Highly recommended adding this to the list too.

    Hi, try out this new app. It's called "We're arriving", and it's a location-based alarm manager. The idea is help people that often go to unknown places, or frequently use public transport and enjoy being distracted by a book, music, landscape or take a good nap. Now they can rest assured that the We're arriving will notify them when entering the alarm trigger area. Check it out at play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.acacio.jatachegandotrial

    I've been using a few of these from quite some time. I must say you've got many areas covered. There's just one suggestion I'd like to make. Though it's pretty new, you must still give it a go. You'd surprised pleasantly as I was. It's a music player named Solo Music Player. It won't be wrong to say that it's among the most beautiful android apps I've ever seen. It is too good to be missed out.

    Please don't recommend AVG. It's a mediocre antivirus at best, and they've recently come out and flat out told people they were going to sell their personal info to make up for the fact they're using a free AV. If anything, an AV like Avast, F-Secure, Trend Micro or Webroot would be a much better suggestion.

    What an awesome list! A lot of these are already my favorites so I trust your taste and I have several of the recommendations downloading as I type. I've been using Smart Launcher for a few years now and won't use anything else. Same with Swiftkey keyboard which I will put aside for now to test out your recommendation of Flesky. Always gotta try new apps and make sure your favorites aren't outdated ideas that have been improved on by someone else. Usually when I try to find articles like this, I find ones that are simply people being paid to promote an app. This list seems like legit research has gone into it and honest opinion. Great work!

    Mr. Editor. It was really nice to know about the information you have shared and all of this information was helpful too. But i have a querry. It keeps bugging me about safety of the android devices when it comes to using a third party app or an app store. So how do you justify that your suggestion to use an alternate for "google play store" called "slide me" will have no breach which would affect the users? I want to use it but since i am more conscious with the security issues, i am asking you this. Hope you don't mind. Please reply with your valuable suggestions.

      TubeMate gives multiple warnings about there being virus-laden versions out there on the 'Net, and to download it from a reputable source. I had used it before, downloaded from the app store at Amazon. But the last time I updated the app, it asked me to please log into my Google account, which it had never done before. So, already it didn't feel right. I typed maybe one or two characters of my Google password, when I noticed that my password text was completely visible (i.e. it was a cleartext form field). This was clearly a sign of phishing, as the true Google login always masks the password text with asterisks. I immediately exited the app and uninstalled it. My advice: be very careful downloading from third party sources. If you do use them, carefully read reviews and comments, and pay attention to the app's behavior. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Uninstall.

    I haven’t tried most of the stuff on your list. But I recently downloaded this app called GrabPoints and so far I’m liking it. They have lots of offers in a day and the surveys aren’t long. Points given out are quite high and they’re fair about giving the points. Oddly enough they always give out points on their social media accounts too! hahaha! Anyway here’s my invite code: S6FMAC you get 50PTS right away for using it. If you download GRABPOINTS you get 1$ just for signing up. You guys have to try it.
