Iris scanning will use your existing smartphone camera and simply needs a pulse of light to scan the iris (basically). Retinal scanning (the one you usually see in the movies) uses infrared light and is a slower scanning process that requires closer and more prolonged contact. It is also more expensive than iris scanning and not necessarily any more secure. The retina also changes over the course of your life whereas the iris doesn't, making it the ideal choice for quick, cheap and convenient identification and unlocking of portable devices. Both methods are far superior to fingerprint scanning.
What do you think about using your eye to unlock your smartphone? Do you think there are better ways available?
