The latest release of the Android NDK gives us support for OpenGL ES 2.0 on phones with Android 2.0 or later. Access to OpenGL ES 2.0 “brings the ability to control graphics rendering through vertex and fragment shader programs.”
So for those of you who are not familiar with that jargon: This new version of OpenGL will greatly improve the visual quality of games you can expect in the future. The iPhone 3GS and the new iPod Touch have this functionality.
The Apple products listed above currently have this ability and there is reason to believe that this new addition will encourage developers to make more 3D games for Android users.
