rooting HTC hero

I'm trying to decide if I should root my HTC hero or not. I'm running a GSM hero in Canada on TELUS and I am tired of waiting for the 2.1 update. but I'm worried Ill brick the phone. should I chance it and root, or is the update coming soon?

I would wait, not wanting to risk my phone with a root procedure. Also, I have the sprint htc hero, and it got the android 2.1 update last week, was a long time in comming but worth it in the end. Surely htc is not far behind in an update for hero's on other providers.

I have the droid eris on Verizon which is supposed to be made similar to the hero and they just did the update to 2.1 less than a week ago.
