You DO have Android 2.1 right?

Android 2.2 hasn't even made it onto all Nexus One handsets yet, and that will be (has been) the first handset to officially get the Android 2.2 update.

However, I have heard of someone getting Android 2.2 onto their Droid, so maybe that is the way to go for you.

I read somewhere that Google is going to start doing only one update yearly starting with the 2.2 which most of us should see later this year. I believe Droid 3rd Quarter.. and Eris 1-3 months later is usually on par for Verizon.

He rooted his phone, made a ROM out of the Nexus One Android 2.2 release that some have, and knew enough about programming to get it working on his Droid from what I understood.

About the yearly releases, yeah, I heard that too, but I'm not sure if Android 2.2 will be the first to get onto a yearly release schedule. I do remember reading that the lead Android guy said that yearly releases was the end-goal, but I have no idea how long that will take. We'll know when Gingerbread comes out I guess.
