Dear Galaxy S i9100 friends!
When the SGS 1 was released, we all tried to figure out what Firmware is available and what Firmware is the newest. Well, we are going to play the same game with the SGS 2.
You'll find several lists in this thread, which will show you the differences of each Firmware. Furthermore you are gonna find extra informations about the Firmware.
We will differentiate between official Firmware which you can get from Kies and Beta- (unofficial) Firmware which you can currently get on www.sammobile.com. You can get the latter on your phone with the Flashtool ODIN via your computer.

ATTENTION:
Flashing with Odin isn't challenging, but unexpected side effects can appear. Experience with others have shown, that many had trouble with recovering the original Firmware. Therefore I'd suggest that you think about it carefully before you upgrade to a higher Beta-Firmware. If you want to change the looks of your interface, try stuff like Go Launcher, ADW Launcher etc.
We are not going to talk about CustomROMS since that's definitely for experienced users.

YOU can find an entire list of the latest Firmware here.

This is a list for the European Firmware, but you can find the American Firmware, the Australian one etc. on that page as well.

The newest published Firmware (via KIES) can be found here:

Where can I acquire Firmware?

Usually the Firmware is offered via Kies. Devices without provider will get 1-3 Updates more than devices with provider(I suppose that Providers are just too lazy to keep updating their System to the latest standards). If you plan on downloading/trying out new Firmware, don't be afraid to sign up on www.sammobile.com. You will usually download Beta-Firmware on that site(just a heads-up!).

You'll need to sign up once but you won't get any Spam Mails, so don't worry about that.

----

One-piece or three-piece Firmware:

You can flash three-pieced Firmware with PIT File and Repartition. It's known to be the best installation because it will format your entire memory. It will lead to the loss of your data however. You can compare one-pieced Firmware with an update because you don't need PIT File or Repartition AND you will keep all of your files (including the ones you don't need).

It really depends on whether you want to delete everything anyway or if you want to keep your stuff.

Flashing with ODIN:

-You'll need something like ODIN 1.85

-If you download a Firmware consisting of 3 parts, click on ODIN RE-Partion!

-If only one file exists, just ignore RE-Partion!

How do I get the stats to my current Firmware?

-Dial *#1234#

There is also an Online-Tool by samfirmware, it's called SamFit (Surprise surprise!). Just find the PDA Version, just type in the PDA Version into the tool and you will get various informations (Language version, release date, whether it's branded or not.). Here's the link to the almighty tool(FYI, the tool doesn't work right now, they still have to fix it.)

Helpful Stuff

-Samsung GT-i9100 User Manual English

-Link to Kies

Thanks guys, I hope you will enjoy this thread!

Yours Truly,

John

PS: Thread will be continued!

Why should you root your device?
That's a good question, we've all probably asked us that question at least once.

It's funny though because the answer is quite simple: COUNTLESS POSSIBILITIES!
You can create a backup of your entire system (Nandroid-Image), install Ad-Block, remove
system applications, install themes for even more eye-candy and a lot more!

Quickstart Root-Instructions shown with the Firmware KI4 2.3.4 Version:
(For all you guys whose pants are already on fire!)

Download:

1) ODIN 1.85
2) The file CF-Root-SGS2_XW_NEE_KI4-v4.1-CWM4.zip
3)The file XWKI4 Stock Kernel

Here we go!

1)Run ODIN and drag the unzipped "CF-Root-SGS2_XW_NEE_KI4-v4.1-CWM4.tar " in the PDA column
2)Start your SGS2 in download mode
3)ODIN should recognize your device now…simply click on start in ODIN now
3a)Your Root Kernel will be flashed now
4)Once the process is finished, the device will reboot. Your device will show a yellow exclamation mark when you start it. We have to fix that now.
5)Turn off your device
6)Stock Kernel download will be shown as *.exe file. If you start it, it wants to extract itself. You have to type in intratrech@XDA once it asks you for a password.
7)Now extract the unzipped KL4 Stock Kernel to the PDA column
8)Start your device in download mode again. Connect it with your PC and click on start again. As soon as the original Kernel was transferred, the SGS will restart and our little yellow buddy disappears despite the fact, that we keep our root. Pretty cool, aye? :D

That's about it.

That entire procedure works with other Firmware too. You just need the right CF-Root-Kernel and the right Stock Kernel.

Stock Kernels can be downloaded here!

This packages has the bootloader modified so you can safely reset the binary counter with a Jig. happy.gif

If you've already flashed a full package from elsewhere or updated using KIES and cannot reset your binary counter using the Jig just flash this package in the PDA or Bootloader section of Odin to replace the bootloaders and then you can reset the counter: http://www.multiupload.com/LQQBRQVJUD

Oh my gosh, what do I need?

1. Odin 1.85
2. The correct Kernel for your device**
3. TIME! At least 30 minutes for your first try.
4. A windows PC with a USB Port and Windows XP or higher (Ridiculous I know, but we just want to be sure.)
5. A Galaxy S2 with a fully charged battery*
6. A comaptible USB Cable
7. Internet (Oh snap)

*It is important for the safety of your Galaxy S2 to have a fully charged battery. If your batteries are drained during the process, your smartphone might not work anymore.

**Stuck at number 2? Go to settings -> Info and look for your Kernel Version. There will be a KG4 or a KH3 or something else. That's the Kernel you need.

OHHH HOW TO I ROOT?

Just in case, if you didn't connnect your Galaxy to your PC yet, download KIES and install it. KIES will install all the necessary USB drivers for your GALAXY and we will need that, if you want ODIN to communicate with your smartphone.

-Unzip your downloaded file
-Start Odin 1.85
-ATTENTION: Your Galaxy needs to be disconnected first and be sure that you turned off KIES
-In Odin, click on PDA and choose your downloaded Kernel (the .tar file)

Now you gotta start your Galaxy in download mode and yea, that's right, you need to turn it off first
Once you've done that, push "Volume down" and your home button (don't move your fingers away just yet!) and push the Power button.
If you've done it correctly, you will get this:

Confirm with "Volume up" and be amazed (Yay, our little green Android friend!):

Your Galaxy S2 is in the desired download mode now!

NOW connect your smartphone with your PC (Yes, you can plug that USB cable in your USB Port now.) and wait until Odin shows you a little "Added" at the left bottom corner of your window AND a COM Port at the left top corner!

We are almost done! Just click START and wait.
Patience is important now. During the entire flashing process DO NOT DISCONNECT your Smartphone! One cannot simply recover your Galaxy if you disconnect it during flashing!

After a while, your Galaxy should reboot itself and has a few new apps up his sleeve:

CWM
Superuser

AND OF COURSE ROOT!

You will always get a yellow warning sign now, if you start your Galaxy. This doesn't really matter though, it's just a gentle reminder that you have changed the original Kernel and that you have lost your warrant.

You can get rid of that annoying little yellow fella. You just need to flash the original Kernal with CF Root (You are gonna keep your Root though.)

NICE. I have a video that pretty much matches what your saying here:

https://www.nextpit.com/en/android/blog/401764/rooting-galaxy-s2

For the Samsung Galaxy S2. There is also a video for unrooting and optimizing it as well.

Pull the battery off your phone, and then power it back on again into fastboot. If you can do that, try the Odin flash again. You're sure your using the right secure/insecure kernels right?
