Had a one-night stand and wondered what your risks of getting an STD are? Maybe you have a new partner and are wondering about your risk?

We've got an App for you! STD Risk Calculator is a tool for sexual health that helps you to determine the risk that you picked up a sexually-transmitted infection (STI) based on what you did during your sexual encounter. The android-based app works by applying powerful scientific methodology to analyze the details of your sex encounter. It can be used for all the major STDs including Herpes (HSV1, HSV2), HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HPV (which causes genital warts and cervical cancer). You just enter in the details about your partner and the sexual activities of your encounter and it provides a sophisticated report that shows your chances of getting an infection.

As for the steps: When you use STD Risk Calculator to do an assessment, you fill in all the information you know! For example, sometimes you know if your partner has an infection, but sometimes not. If not, you leave the status of the infection left on "Unsure". When details are not known, the system automatically fills in the blanks using appropriate background information based on scientific research. For many infections, specific details must be known to provide an accurate assessment of risk. So additional questions are asked if necessary and then research-informed metrics are performed.

The result is a highly detailed report that summarizes your encounter and shows you your partner's probability of having each of several sexually transmitted infections. In addition to this, you can see risks detailing whether you picked up any of your partner’s infections (this is a secondary layer of calculation). This information is presented as easy-to-read graphs that should be understandable by anyone. Finally, personalized risk factors are identified that may help you to improve your sexual health by making smarter choices!

STD Risk Calculator is available for Android (on Google Play) in two flavors: Free and 99 cents. It is coming out soon as an App for iPhone, iPad and iPod (on App Store). Currently, the web-based version is free-to-try through the web!

We do explain our methodology on the website to an extent:

To protect it, we obfuscate our client-side APK (obviously) but we also do our computations on a backend server because it took many months to research and build.

Basically, we use event-based linked probability for risk events and derive our event weights from research outcomes. This requires a good understanding of the relevant risk factors in an analysis and this was very difficult for the viral infections. The bacterial infections were less complex to model. We did a lot of interpolation on prevalence data as well. We had people with university education for statistics, public health, and epidemiology consult. Hope that helps.

Way over my head but thanks for the explanation! It sounds like you guys really did your homework and that's what I wanted to find out. We often have apps that claim some kind of similar service where the methodology is questionable to say the least. But your STD risk calculator sounds like a quality app. Nice!
