AndroidPIT is a good place to start

Good question though. What is the process for marketing and promoting your apps? Are there standard and well known ways of doing it, or is it about being clever and finding specific channels? Or both maybe?

It's really a tough question for indie developers. Unless you have plenty of money to spend on advertising, most likely your app will never be seen. Review sites like this one and others are a good way to get started. If you have enough money to put into an ad-mob campaign or something like that it helps you get a "seed" base. Then if you app is good people who like it will tell their friends about it and the app grows. Though it takes a lot of money to run a successful ad-mob campaign, $50 will not be much help. Also make sure when someone searches the app store your app is shown, here is a good blog about app store optimization: http://droid-blog.net/category/aso-2/ Here are some more blogs on marketing: http://makingmoneywithandroid.com/ http://gamasutra.com/blogs/ErnestWoo/20120404/168026/Android_Marketing_for_Indies.php

If anyone is interested, I run a site called www.droidappoftheday.com

I offer free reviews of android apps, so long as I think they are good! I appreciate pay pal donations to keep the site running but it isn't necessary! send me an email at droidappoftheday@gmail.com if you are interested.

In my own experience - I have a few apps on Google Play - my most popular app was called Social Hub, but then I realised it was the same name as the social app of the Galaxy S3, so I decided it might be in my best interest to change the name.

Since changing the name to Social Zone (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andromo.dev20674.app76419&hl=en), the downloads have dropped. Have tried setting up a website (http://mantisapps.blogspot.com.au/) and have have set up the usual Facebook and Twitter Accounts. If anyone else wants to help out or has some ideas, I am all ears!

I think you can use some marketing companies that offer Google Play promotion services. They offer rather good services for successful app promotion on the market.

You're at right place to promote your app. You can also try social media but rather doing it on social media, you should go with ad networks because they guide app developers properly (with concerns like app monetization).
