Samsung Galaxy S4 Active — Help with excessive inbound email

I was hoping someone might have an answer as to why I keep getting emails long after I've delete them...repeat emails. It seems that when I let my inbox gain more than 25 emails it goes nuts. I will start getting emails from 3, 4, and 5 weeks earlier all over again... ones that have already been deleted.
any suggestions???
