Samsung Galaxy S3 mini — Software Update - What does it mean & is it safe ?

I keep on getting a message on my phone = Software Update . "Previous update package downloaded. Install update now ? ( During installation the device cannot be used, not even for emergency calls ) ". Then I get a choice of Later or Install . I choose Later & click on " 3 hours" as I have no idea what this is & if it is safe . I am not a techno , just an ordinary , elderly ( !) Brit who just wants to use my phone for calls /texting / camera & to access music & You Tube .
What should I do ?

Software update is very important for the devices as it help to download and latest software from the web so that your device can work properly and protect mobile from virus. Updating software is quite lengthy as it take time so it is preferred that you update software when you are not using mobile may be in free time. software updates are necessary for performance and for taking out the bugs.
