how to change app background in code (Based on time of day)

I am modifying an open source clock app for my Mother with Dementia symptoms.

I would like to have the app background change depending on the time of day. For example, day image, early evening image and night image.

I have been able to hard code a background image but I would like the code to change it automatically

Any help is greatly appreciated
