All of the photos that come in thru WA go to the phone's photo gallery automatically. How can that be stopped?

If you don't want WhatsApp auto download all photos to your phone, you can go to Settings on WhatsApp, then tap Data usage, untick photos on every option under Media auto-download.
If you don't want the WhatsApp images to show on your Gallery app, you may check this method https://faq.whatsapp.com/en/android/30031687.

If you do not wish to download the WhatsApp images than change the Whatsapp setting and simply turn off the auto download option from the app which will solve all the issues of the photos.

Simply you can turnoff the auto download option in Whatsapp

Turn off in the what's app setting.
