Keep old number without sim but new sim when also getting a new phone

Hi Everyone,

I have a semi-complex issue (for me at least!).

Scenario:

  • Old iphone with old US phone number. I no longer have the sim for that number but my whatsapp account is using that number.

  • New Samsung S8 with new sim.

Goal/Question: How can I maintain the old number on the new Samsung S8? Typically if you put a new sim into the old iphone it will give you a choice to keep the old number or choose the new number...but this time I have a new phone... Is there any other way to link whatsapp?

Hi Justin,

welcome to AndroidPIT! :)

To be able to activate WhatsApp on a new phone, you always need access to that number because you will receive an SMS with an activation code. So you need a SIM card with the old number, otherwise you will not be able to use your old number in WhatsApp again.

You can however simply switch your number in WhatsApp. Open WhatsApp on the old iPhone and open the settings, navigate to "Account" and click on "Change number". Your whole WhatsApp account will be transferred to the new number.
