Desperately need help. Have spent the last week trying to run the "Hello World" app from Android studio 3 but the emulator is waiting for target device to come online. I have set up the studio correctly and reinstalled it. Tried various platforms (currently Lollipop 22) with a combination of devices (currently Nexus S). The consistent warning that does out of all this is "Emulator: Warning: Quick Boot / Snapshots not supported on this machine. A CPU with EPT + UG features is currently needed. We will address this in a future release". I have chosen the Cold boot option, which seems to make no difference, Software emulation seems to give less sundry errors, not sure what Snapshots are. Can anybody help?

No such joy, there is no item on the start menu, in the start menu Android folder the only item is android studio. I have searched in windows explorer and cannot find it

I see now. On my PC, I have installed 'Android SDK Tools'. So there is a folder named with 'Android SDK Tools' in my Start menu. And that's why I can find the menu item 'AVD Manager' in that folder or in the Start menu.

Anyway I mean you should start those tools with admin privileges from which you will start the emulator. Thus your emulator will be running with admin privileges. Good luck to you.

Can you successfully start the destination AVD in AVD Manager? If not, edit or repair it. Or you can create another AVD soon.

Every AVD works as a TCP server application which is listening on some IP & port.
So, please check whether some security application on your PC stopped communications between the emulator and Android Studio.

In Android Studio, select your project, Run - Edit configurations, General - Deployment Target Options, make sure to select 'Open Select Deployment Target Dialog'.

Then run app, in the 'Select Deployment Target' pop-up dialog, can you find your AVD in 'Connected Devices' list?

Or you may run 'Android Device Monitor' to verify that your AVD does work well.

If you can't find your AVD there, there must be some troubles about your AVD.

Thanks for your input, I can find and run the avd, it just doesn't want to connect, it is active and the buttons on the bottom turn blue when clicked. "Open select deployment target dialog" was the option selected in the popup box, I have tried running with "Emulator" selected and my AVD selected in the "Prefer Android virtual device" drop down box. The result is the same, Studio is waiting for target device to come online

Try to run 'AVD Manager' with administrator privileges, and then start your AVD.
Go to Android Studio and open your project, 'run app' again.

Sorry having difficulties here as am unfamiliar with android programming tools.
image

Here is sdt manager, not much to see and all appears to work ok.
ADM has been deprecated on apparently not installed with Studio 3. This page
developer.android.com/studio/profile/monitor.html
suggests quite a few tools that replace it, but which one to use and how?
I have administrative privileges over the whole machine, Which is a dual core intel E5300 2.6Ghz the CPU has no VT-d and VT-x says "See ordering information" the BIOS allows Virtualization to be switched on, but I am selecting to use software emulated performance in AVD manager.
Sorry this is such a difficult process, really appreciate your help and time

According to the screenshot about 'Select Deployment Target' dialog, your target AVD is not online as it is not in the list of 'Connected Devices'.

So I mean that you should try to start the AVD manually from AVD Manager before you select deployment target.
And you should right-click 'AVD Manager' in Start menu, select 'Run with administrator privileges' to ensure they will work well.

Thanks, yes you are right in the screen shot above it isn't running, here is a shot where it is
image

this is as far as it goes, if I now start up the app. it won't connect with the emulator.
Tried exiting studio with the emulator running, the starting studio again. The result on running the app was slightly different "Installing APKs" was displayed with a progress bar - I gave up after 5 minutes as no progress was made.
I am already set up as the system administrator, so not sure how to get further privileges.

My Android Studio is still V2.2.3. I have not the issue.
Didn't your emulator fully start up? Can you browse internet or do anything else in the emulator?

Is your native language German? I would like to explain more details about privileges to run AVD or Android Studio.
In Start menu of your Windows 7, right-click on menu item, AVD Manager or Android Studio. In the pop-up context menu, then select 'Run with admin privileges'.

Btw, it will be appreciated if you would like to support my free app which is available on Google Play. :D

Emulator is active and responds to some commands like change orientation and ... on the toolbar, the screen flashes when the photo button is pressed - but it doesn't connect to the studio.

My native language is English

Didn't know that option was available, but makes no difference,
Emulator: qemu-system-i386.exe: Unable to open C:\Users\Mike.android\avd\Nexus_S_API_22_3.avd\data\misc\pstore\pstore.bin: Permission denied
is shown when I exit the emulator.

Already have a unit converter but will have a look at your app
Many thanks

How can I run the emulator with privileges
Is this the same as running Studio as administrator
Do the admin privileges carry over when studio starts the emulator

As you got a message, 'Permission denied', I suggest that you try to run the emulator with admin privileges.

Steps as below -

  1. Run 'AVD Manager' with admin privileges, and then start the emulator here.
Now the emulator is running with admin privileges.

  2. Start Android Studio with admin privileges.

Click 'Start' icon of your Windows 7,
In Start menu, right-click on menu item, AVD Manager.
In the pop-up context menu, then select 'Run with admin privileges'.
In AVD Manager dialog, select your emulator, then click 'Start'.

Btw, I see. I just look forward to a 5-star rating for my free app. Thanks in advance. :D

James: Thanks for your help and advice. I am getting to the point of giving up on Android Studio 3.1
I have found the the permissions on pstore.bin get set to read only on exiting the emulator. If I remove the read only I don't get the Permission denied error, but it still hangs!
Interesting that the release notes say "If you are still getting hangs file a report" on the last two releases.
I think the basic problem is one of compatibility between the latest Studio and an old low range computer with Win 7 adding an extra level of confusion. My next move is to uninstall studio and try an older version. I did try to install Ubuntu to USB stick, but my version of Windows 7 pro will not boot from an ISO. If all this fails I will get a new computer Win 10 with i5-7400 processor and set it up to dual boot with Ubuntu
