How to read crypt12 file?

Actually, someone very close to me just died under mysterious circumstances. Someone very young. And we have reason to believe the perpetrator in collusion with the authorities may have deleted some key messages when the phone was in custody. But fortunately, they do not know about these previous version of backups.

We did find a previous version of backup, wherein the messages from that date are missing from the phone. We cannot risk renaming any file and making it the current database lest we lose out the current version/tamper with evidence.

We need to open this previous backup independent of the phone in question. We do have the phone at hand. Can someone please help and give the bereaved souls some solace???
